FINAL WARNING: Attention Caucus States! This is your last chance!
Submitted by laclient19 on Sat, 02/02/2008 - 17:24
I caucused for the first time saturday in Maine.
I realized a few things and thought I'd share them with you guys.
First of all, I had the wrong mindset going into this. I felt as though I had to "get the message out" to everyone in town. And, I pretty much did just that. But this shotgun strategy doesn't really work well in a caucus state. It worked OK, we placed 2nd but when you drill down it could have been won much more easily.
A caucus presents a rare opportunity because hardly NO ONE really participates. Our town has 17,500 people. We are right next to Maine's largest city of Portland (100K or so). Out of our 17,500 only 78 people showed up to caucus. That was a record turnout.
We're not talking about large numbers. If each person already identified as a Ron Paul supporter got 2 more people each (cousin, brother, sister, mother, father, aunt, uncle, friend) that could make all the difference in the world. You could also go down your street and try to find someone to support YOU. The biggest key is getting them to commit to YOU. Make sure they know you're counting on them and counting THEM in your numbers. Tell them you will call the day before or day of caucus. Hell, go pick em up. It's really an easy sell, it doesn't cost them anything but time. Let them know that YOU want to show strong support at your meetup (treat it like a sponsorship) and that you need X number of people to pledge their support for you and show up. You'd be surprised at how many people would want to help YOU and could care less about the election.Thinking about it, I could have went to McDonald's this morning and probably convinced someone who never voted to hop in the car with me if I bought them a sausage biscuit.
The sign bombs and mass calling and surface canvassing is great and it feels good but it doesn't match up to finding people who say "yes, I will go support you at Caucus". I can't stress this enough.
This was a great learning experience for me and some other things I learned:
1. Get there EARLY and wear buttons (or have them in your pocket so you can slap em on if they are allowed. If you're doing stealth mode, have only one LEADER type person wear buttons and do the greeting and handing out of literature.
2. Greet EVERYONE that comes into the room with a smile, a hello, and personally hand them a good piece of Ron Paul literature. If you can't get a hold of good literature, write a letter and sign it.
3. Bring a few signs to stick outside near the caucus site (when I saw the Romney signs we turned right around and went get some RP signs to throw up)
4. Have a KILLER speech prepared - you will probably be up against paid speakers by the other campaigns (grassroots stating that they LIVE there and are NOT paid by the campaign goes a long way)
5. Have a head count of Ron Paul supporters and double check the number after the final tally. (try to get the headcount as you greet people, they will tell you they are supporting Ron Paul even if they whisper it).
6. MOST IMPORTANT: Every Ron Paul supporter should be willing to be a delegate. In Maine, we can assign delegates and replace them later with another human being. You might be able to do the same in your state. We probably won't win Maine's popular vote, but it appears that we will have the most delegates - its very close from the results we have thus far.

Bring all your friends and family
Tell them they must support you as a delegate and even become one themselves if they are willing.
FINAL WARNING AND FINAL CHANCE
Keep bumping this. I cannot stress enough the importance of the outline I provided. If you follow this you will win your precinct. It is that simple. Maine proved it.

Also, stay to the end and get the final count. Have the caucus rep sign off on the numbers. This way you can verify them later when they get posted.

Don't Forget to Ask for Time Off
Delegates:
Clear the State Convention date with your boss and be sure you can go. Also, there may be opportunities to substitute delegates if others change their plans.

RP has the most delegates in my town
My Wife and I attended the caucus in Brownfield which is a small town of about 1300+. We had about 18 people present which was a record attendance according to the Chair person running the meeting. Me and two other RP supporters became delegates as well. No one else wanted to participate. Who knew!!! I was also picked to count the votes along with another lady. I would have to say that the integrity of the vote taking and counting was done very well. Alll in all, it was a great experience to see how it works. :)
yeah... CA is a primary state
but good post. I'm wondering what the best use of my time was...

This should be plastered all over
the place. These logistics decide the mood at 9 pm on the caucus and primary days. Even if this cahieves at worst 2% raise in delegates or votes, it worth more than raising a million dollars, in my opinion.

2 delegates 1 family
at our caucus they were begging anyone to sign up to be a delegate so my wife and I did. I was going to anyway, but it was astonishingly simple. We walked up to the head table at the end of the caucus and and just signed up to be a delegate it was as easy as joining a mailing list ! There were about 100 people in attendance at our caucus in York ME. Ron Paul took 3rd in the poll but appeared to have the most delegates

Super Tuesday Folks - LISTEN TO MAINE, NV, & LA
We did the same in NV and took 2nd in the straw poll and won a whopping amount of delegates!! Delegates are what matters. The primary and straw polls are a dog and pony show.

Great post! I hope it reaches caucus going RP people.
Colorado
Take note. I completely agree. I am using my walk lists to ask the people I know to support me. Forget everyone else. Get 10 - 20 and win your precinct. I guess if you don't personally know that many you need to do it the hard way, but this will be much easier. Also check with your county organizer and ask them for the names of any other confirmed donor supporters in your precinct so you can contact them before Tuesday night. RP08
A good way to get some RP
A good way to get some RP literature to hand out is to become a precinct leader!
Also, it is important to stress that if every RP supporter brought 2 friends with them then that would TRIPLE the RP vote!!!
Sounds easy enough. I wish

don't fail...when you're at your caucus you will see what I mean
Become a precinct leader and get it done.
Go caucus down your street today and tomorrow with the voter list you will get when you become a precinct leader.
Then, and this is SERIOUS - you must get your family, friends, and co-workers involved. You have to get them to your caucus. I can't stress this one enough.
Alot of Ron Paul's supporters are SOLO, let me tell you Huckster and Romniacs come out in couple droves. Romeny's people come out in family unit droves (kids old enuf to vote and all).
