Economic Collapse of Argentina and how we can prepare.

I am unable to give credit to who wrote this but I have found it at several survival websites. It's about life in Argentina after the Economic Collapse and this persons thoughts on how he could have prepared better.

After you read it I'd be really intrested in your thoughts on the gold jewlery he talks about. Because his accounts are something I have been worried about if I had gold coins.

NOTE: SHTF = Sh*t Hit The Fan

BEGINS:

My brother visited Argentina a few weeks ago. He’s been living in Spain for a few years now. Within the first week, he got sick, some kind of strong flu, even though climate isn’t that cold and he took care of himself. Without a doubt he got sick because there are lots of new viruses in my country that can’t be found in 1st world countries. The misery and famine lead us to a situation where, even though you have food, shelter and health care, most of others don’t, and therefore they get sick and spread the diseases all over the region.

What got me started on this post is the fact that I actually saw this coming, and posted on the subject here at Frugal’s, months before the new viruses spread over the country and the news started talking about this new, health emergency, which proves that talking, thinking and sharing ideas with like minded people (you guys), does help to see things coming and prepare for them with enough time.
So I started thinking about several issues, what I learned (either the hard way or thanks to this forum) after all these years of living in a collapsed country that is trying to get out an economical disaster and everything that comes along with it.

Though my English is limited, I hope I’m able to transmit the main ideas and concepts, giving you a better image of what you may have to deal with some day, if the economy collapses in your country.
Here is what I have so far:

URBAN OR COUNTRY?

After watching Apocolypto tonight..

this fella is making some sense. When the SHTF, its going to happen in the blink of an eye. Our entire lives, country and future is going to shift dramatically. I hope there are some people that still believe in America when it happens.

Agreed

This post provides good food for thought...but something does not add up. Not only his command of English, but his extensive knowledge of guns, specifically US models and calibers. i am pretty sure if most things are coming from china as he says then the firearms would be Russian and Chinese not US. Ammo would not be common US military like .308 it would be 5.56 NATO. No .38 snub nose...that’s a specific US police pistol. Argentina would use something like a Glock, a Makarov, or a Ballester Molina, possibly even a colt. He also references navy seals and "john freaking Rambo!" For a guy who knows limited English he sure knows pop culture and is able to write English perfect, complete with conjunctions!

So shit is so bad you need a gun everywhere you go...especially when you’re out buying Xbox games? You may have to defend these Xbox games shooting from a moving car with your weak hand? This guy tells me how ridicules facial cream is, and how i should fill up soda bottles with water that may last me a few weeks, then tells me how he enjoys DVDs and Xbox?

Hey asshole you may be able to afford that generator you want if you held off on Halo! And i bet you can find plenty of solar powered Xbox’s but no solar battery chargers!......This is such a load of BS! One minute you’re fighting for your life and the next your getting married and having kids. Saving up pain killers and using antibiotics? If both are available i would stock up on the antibiotics over pain killers any day. No power or clean water but no problem on oral surgery! No economy, but if you can't find it at your local black market you can just go to the supermarket? This whole story is filled with inconsistency. My only question is how so many of you feel it is for real?

Good food for thought...but i am calling BS on this one.

Very good points.

I guess I approached this article as a summary of events over years after an economic collapse. The main thing I took away from it was that there is a lot of "gray area" between Now, and a total collapse. I think that a lot of people have this idea that tomorrow they may wake up and zombies will be on the streets, and we'll carry big guns to fight them.

I think he is a describing a very real situation, where people still work regular jobs and electricity is on most of the time. However, sometimes the power goes out for days at time. Also products are a lot more expensive.

Imagine just those two things alone - 12 dollar gasoline and random power outages. Here in Ukranian Village neighborhood of Chicago, I can imagine the chaos that would ensue. The entire "west side" of Chicago would start migrating inward. We'd have black people who are used to government checks buying their food and booze moving into our "delightfully bohemian" neighborhood. They would not be attacking people in broad daylight, but would make carrying a high-powered handgun a necessity. I can even see why he would suggest a silencer.

I think there is a lot of varied circumstances he describes, and they are not all the same. But I think they all are different "shades of gray." If times were REALLY hard, I can imagine a local mafia controlling a trading market here. And after reading (somewhere else on Daily Paul) about people maintaining their neighborhoods in the US after a hurricane with a local posse armed with shotguns, I do not think it is too far-fetched.

I would say the gentleman who wrote this article had spent time in the US, maybe in the military. But that does not take away from his expertise in weapons. It only enhances it.

I think he is writing this article for a rather informed audience - a survival forum somewhere. That explains why he rants and raves about people thinking they are snipers who will shoot people a mile away. His point about carrying a handgun while you check your water pump is very poignant.

He is a bit of a gun nut, but everything he says is relatively common knowledge within the gun world. I do not think his opinion that 9mm is better than 40cal are anything out of the ordinary. Here on the Daily Paul forum there is a thread with that exact name.

So... anyway I guess my point is I don't think it's BS. I do think it's probably the 3rd draft of something he wrote that encompasses a lot of different situations and issues. We have to remember that Argentina was a "2nd world" nation even before the collapse. So if in the midst of years of turmoil there was probably need to perform oral surgery with limited instruments. I don't see this as too inconsistent.

Do you think I am completely off base? Let me know.

Shot?? Like pellets?

Where does one buy gold or silver shot?

Jewelry suppliers

It's technical name is casting grain. I doubt anyone is going to accept this for trade since it will be of an unknown purity. The plus side is that you can reload shotshells with silver and use them against werewolves and bankers ;-)

"Forget about shooting those that mean you harm from 300 yards."

"Those that want to harm you/steal from you don’t come with a pirate flag waving over their heads."

Agreed.

I want to point out that my website, www.sniperflashcards.com, is NOT a survivalist site. When I advocate zeroing your rifle for 300 yards, I am talking about OFFENSIVE action against uniformed soldiers, not defensive action against civilian criminals.

My tactics page is titled, "How To Defend A City From Invasion Using Civilian Snipers as an Auxiliary to the Regular Army." It is NOT titled "How to Defend Yourself Against Robbers and Thugs."

Think Grozny or Sarajevo - that is what I am talking about, NOT Buenos Aires.

Against civilian criminals, my weapon of choice would be a Ka-Bar, with a weak-hand pistol as a backup:

1) Knives are faster to draw than pistols - I've won fights because the other guy had a pistol, not in spite of that. He stood flat-footed groping at his SOB holster while I stuck him in the ribs. If he'd boxed with me, he might have won - he was bigger, after all.

2) It is almost impossible to get a knife yanked out of your hand, especially if you hold it blade up (blade on the thumb side of your hand) with your finger over the little tab on the back of the knife.

3) After the initial few seconds, if they are still at it, you can hold them off with the knife while you draw your pistol with your weak hand - and, yes, the pistol should be in a weak-hand holster.

4) Even when you have enough warning to get your pistol out first, you will still need a big enough knife to cut off their hand if they grab your pistol. Autoloaders and revolvers can be disabled by grabbing them and preventing the slide from sliding or the chamber from revolving.

As for the rest of this post (water, food, gas, electricity, etc.), I'll leave that for the survivalists to discuss. My personal survival technique is to locate the nearest Outback Steakhouse - if that doesn't work, I don't know what I'd do. Probably cannibalism!

The little tab you refer to is actually called a guard

your pronoucement of "winning FIGHTS" is a bit obscured when you switch from plural to singular as to when you refer to an adversary as "standing flat footed" If you are real then you should realize you are singing in the wrong choir here. Most if not all the respondents in this forum would have a real problem dealing with using a trigger on someone 100 yards away much less dealing with close handed killing such as you were referring to. Front on a KBar is usefull but I much prefer a lenth of piano wire (I believe its the G string) fastened to two caribiners.

Very nice. Added several

Very nice. Added several items to my "survival list".

Thank You

for posting this up, I sent it to my meetup groups!

This is the most valuble information that I got in a long time!!

#1 Item on My To-Do List - Neighborhood block party

I am single, living alone in a town that is surrounded by Los Angeles City. In other words, it's a neighborhood, but in the middle of miles of urban settings with potential for chaos.

I've often thought about what I would do after an earthquake if we had days without power and other services.

The #1 thing: hold a block meeting with my neighbors.

Have them all show up (bring your own chair) and decide who's going to block the street at each end (to prevent looting), who has medical expertise, who can babysit, who can cook pot-luck style, how to conserve water, and mainly: how to make sure your neighbors remain calm and civilized. I'll certainly keep a libertarian approach. The key is to minimize fear. Fear does not produce good results.

Then, you invite the next street over to do the same.

Now, when I wear my screenwriter hat, I would not let this happen until the last act after lots of conflict and drama. ;) Which reminds me, I need to dust off the script I wrote in 1983 which is set after a monetary collapse.

It's a good article to get you thinking

about your survival.

Survival requirements can be very different depending on circumstances. It's hard to be 100% ready for everything.
Basic survival skills for your area, anticipating a total shutdown of infrastructure for an extended period, and how you can get by, is the mind-set and preparation you need to do.

I may quibble with some of the author's points, but he presents some good information in general, and I'm sure it will be helpful to many.

Did you know that Argentina had a DEFLATIONARY collapse in

terms of the U.S. dollar? As I understand, things got so cheap in Argentina during the crisis in U.S. dollar terms and it was a great opportunity to buy up good assets for those who had the dollars, mostly foreign investors.

So, what is the parallel between Argentina back then and the U.S.A? Well, as I understand, the Argentina debt was denominated in the U.S. dollar, and they could not pay the debt. Our debt is also denominated in the U.S. dollar. In my opinion, we are also likely to have a deflationary crisis in terms of the dollar just like Argentina when we can no longer service our debt. Also, in my opinion, the U.S. government cannot print the dollar just as Argentina could not because this is now up to the international bankers as I understand.

So, those who think that the U.S. government would just print its way out are simply fooled by disinformation, in my opinion.

As for gold, I think it is likely do what it always does: hold value in the long run. But, in the short run, especially during a deflationary crisis, I don't know what it might do. This is my concern. It might do well, but it might not. I think it is speculative.

So, if you are a rich person who has enough wealth that you want to preserve in the long run, I would think it's fair to say that gold has a good track record.

But, if you are trying to gain during the crisis with gold, this is very speculative, in my view.

In my opinion, it is a good idea to make sure that you have enough U.S. dollars to pay your bills and taxes before you participate in a speculation.

Thanks I never got to read it before.

Whew lot of good info

This article

was full of useful information.

Thanks for sharing it.

Never knew things were that bad
down there.

I would quibble with this

I would quibble with this person in their advice to buy gold jewelry over gold coins or bullion. When buying gold jewelry (at least in the USA), one is going to pay many multiples of the value of the gold in a given piece of jewelry ---- for example, a $200 14kt gold ring might typically have only $15 or $20 worth of gold in it. It would be FAR better to buy any gold coins, even the higher-premium 1/10 oz. sizes, than to buy jewelry just for its gold value. You just have to know what the coins gold content is, and make sure you don't sell them to some sleazy junk gold dealer as he describes.

Yeah, he doesn't sound like he knows what he's talking about

in this section. Anyone can buy a scratch test kit to check for the purity of gold items. The reason one buys coins in the first place is because they are trusted to be a stated weight and purity.

Everything else seems spot on, though.

After reading this it makes

After reading this it makes sence to me... interesting information to ponder!

Can someone post the "companion" article to this?

I'm sure it's not by the same person but it is a list of things to have on hand. I believe it was also written by someone from Argentina.

In Australia, it's not so much guns (because we aren't allowed to have them in our homes) but knives. Sydney is the "knife capital" of Australia so I've been told.

I spent three years learning Krav Maga (the fighting system of the Israeli military -- Krav Maga means "contact combat"). One of the things I had to do was fight a man with a knife. I survived and impressed the heck out of the man "attacking" me. It is easy to learn but ruthless -- we don't fight for points or to go to the Olympics, we fight to survive. Israeli children have fought off grown men using Krav Maga. If you don't have a Krav Maga trainer nearby, I recommend Jujitsu. That's my 10 cents for tonight.

Being Well planned realisitically

A very realistic look into what can REALLY happen in an economic collapse.

I think this is very good advice coming from first hand experience.

Sad, but definitely true. I am sure.

Unfortunately, Argentina is on GWB and the Neo-Cons......

hit list (invasion plans) right after Iran. This was stated by Aaron Russo after it was conveyed to him per Nick Rockefeller in a conversation they had while Nick was aggressively trying to recruit Aaron into the CFR around the year 2000. You can see and listen to Aaron's remarks in the video "From Freedom to Fascism".

Argentine post

I do wonder about the great lengths to which this person goes into talking about firearms (the longest topic covered by far), given Argentina's typically stringent laws on handgun ownership and use. It makes me wonder if this post was maybe not actually written by an Argentinian, or at least maybe was added to by somebody else.

Me too.

The English used just didn't fit with being written by "someone who doesn't know English very well." Not at all.

It was written on frugalsqurriels forums, like the writer wrote in the first paragraph. It's what they meant by "posted on the subject here at Frugal’s".

It is an international survivalist community, with lot's of discussion about Argentina.

It is also a copyright essay, and Frugal is asking people to stop posting this around the web. Here is a link (Easier to read too)

I worked with a 30+ year old

I worked with a 30+ year old gentleman who was from Argentina who was there when the collapse occurred and he said it was really rough when the max they would allow them to withdrawl was $500, and he had 40K+ in his account.

Basically, they're understanding was "eh, so what, tough luck..."

I have yet to read the article, but I wanted to share my thoughts on this, I believe it's very important to learn from history and not repeat the mistakes made by others.

Good point about withdrawing money from banks...

in a crisis. As I see it and I may be wrong, the government bailouts appear to be nothing more than the government owning/nationalizing the banks as they did in Europe during the Communist era and if you should want to get your money out in a dire situation such as in Argentina, you can only have little if any of it.

My Hungarian grandfather when he came to this country in the early part of the 20th century, NEVER kept his money in a bank because he never trusted them remembering what they did in Europe.

Phoney Article?

I seriously question the authenticity of this article. The English and idoms do not bespeak someone from Argentina. Everything about the article suggests it was written by an American - Do they really have orange jumpsuits for prisoners in Argentina, too? TSHTF? This is an American idom, not Argentina. I doubt this is an authentic piece. If it were, could we not expect some source or credit?

seems fake...

As someone who has spent much of the last few years in Buenos Aires I must say this article was completely different from what i've seen here. Things have definitely been "up" since 2001.

As a side note, just a week or two ago the country paid off all external debt to the World Bank/IMF and are no longer any part of that system.

"Jewellery"

He sounded American to me, too. Of course, it should have been "jewellry."
