Challenger gives Ron Paul a run for his money in congressional contest

06:27 PM CST on Sunday, February 10, 2008

Lee McGuire's 11 News report

HOUSTON -- Ron Paul is running for president, but he’s also running for re-election as a Congressman in District 14. That includes Brazoria and a large chunk of Galveston Counties.

At first, it seemed like it would be an easy win.

But Paul has drawn a well-funded, well-connected challenger in the Republican primary.

Paul told many of the people working on his presidential campaign that he was letting them go Friday, so he could concentrate on the congressional race.

He’s also been telling his donors that he needs cash for the congressional run.

Many thought all signs were pointing to Paul dropping his bid for the White House.

But they were wrong.

Paul had a good showing in the Washington and Kansas caucuses Saturday.

Energized by that, he decided to stay in the race.

“Oh yeah, I’m still in the race, because I had my best day yesterday. I was in double digits for the first time in second place. Sometimes surprises happen. I used to be in fourth place, now I’m in third,” Paul said.

“He has not represented this district for some time, in my opinion, as well as it deserves to be represented, and I think this district has realized that with his campaign for president and they’re looking for a change in leadership,” Chris Peden, the Friendswood City Councilman who’s giving Paul a run for his money said.

As of Dec. 31, Peden had raised twice as much money as Paul for the congressional race.

Federal rules say you’re not allowed to use presidential campaign money to run for Congress.

So even though Paul raised millions for the presidential run, they’re no good for the contest in District 14.

The Rally Was Awesome!

I live in the district and drove a little over an hour.

Most were from the district but there were those from outside the district who came a bus.

The polls in the district show Ron Paul with a 70% approval rating.
But, we still need to campaing and spread the word

This is a traditionally democratic district. So even if Peden won the primary, unlikely, the dems would field a candidate and there would be a democrat in congress.

no dem

No Democrat filed for office. It is too late for that. This is the election for the 14th.

I hear a Libertarian filed for this district. In the past, the Libertarian party has asked candidates to not run against Ron Paul.

BTW, 2 of those buses were DFW area people. We rented 2 buses, one left from Ft. Worth, the other from Dallas.

He is CFR SCUM

Chris who?

Look what I found. According to a lot of news, Peden is an CPA. What does the CPA alphabets mean? It's Counting Posts Around! Actually he's a Certified Public Accountant. But I stumbled upon this article:

Chris Peden's Cash Discrepancy
If his campaign's rhetoric is to be believed, the Honorable Chris Peden, Friendswood City Councilman extraordinaire, is on the verge of unseating the lovable crank Congressman from Surfside, Dr. Ron Paul. Last week the D.C.-based gossip rag Roll Call recieved the following dispatch:

Dallas Frohrib, a spokesman for the Peden campaign, said this week that the Friendswood councilman is now sitting on a war chest of $110,000, and climbing.
With that kind of cash and endorsements racking up from such luminaries as Denny and the Haig, rug cleaning magnate Aubrey Theode, and I-10's favorite burger stand proprietor, Peden is starting to look like a shoe-in.

And that's not even counting his official website endorsement list. From an antecedent north Texas kabob house to the League City Fuddruckers; from the think tanks of Caspar, Wyoming to the Wall of Retired Commissioners in Allegany County, Maryland; from the giant Lysol refinery in Lake Jackson to Eric Dondero's blackberry, a resounding message rings out: Chris Peden is our man for Congress!

Even David Hill, the Woodlands pollster who is rumored to be crunching numbers for the Peden camp, has boldly predicted that Paul will be swept from office next spring by a tide of irate NASA employees and angry social conservatives, who will inevitably show up to hand Texas' convention delegation to Duncan Hunter much like they did with the Fort Worth Straw Poll.

But then Roll Call decided to do a little research...

Peden closed the third quarter with just $363 in cash on hand, while raising just $8,654 for the period.
In case you're wondering, that puts the "official" FEC numbers for his campaign at exactly $109, 637 short of the claimed mark...which may also explain the constant rumors we are hearing about Peden's desire to obtain a ballot spot by petition signatures rather thanthe standard $2000 filing fee.

But Peden still has those battalions of NASA employees, or so he frequently tells the press to the echoes of Dr. Hill, who constantly reminds him that "NASA is based in Paul’s district."

Well, not really. Far be it from his interlocutor to provide the Honorable Councilman a lesson in cartography, but NASA sits squarely in Democrat Nick Lampson's district well across the Harris County line. And for the time being, I won't even comment on the intrinsic irony of a candidate who complains about Paul's inability to bring home the NASA bacon while simultaneously imputing earmark hypocrisy.

How can I vote for a guy like Peden? Has not won anything yet and has begun misstating things already. He definitely has to go back and take a refresher course in accounting, geography, and ethics.

Ron Paul's campaign needs to

Ron Paul's campaign needs to turn that post into a newspaper/TV ad.

just letting everyone who is listening know...

that in lake jackson yesterday, we were part of a group of over two thousand people showing up for RON. peden had his little shin digg in the SAME BUILDING and it was dwarfed beyond recognition. i looked through the glass at them after we heard Ron's 2nd speech that he made outside the place (because there were so many people - the original room only held 1250). there was maybe 50 people.

peden who?

Yea, the congressional

Yea, the congressional campaign heard about the Peden rally and rented in the same building. Even though it was a Congressional rally, they invited others to come hear RP speak.

This was done to prove to Chris P that Ron Paul will not go down without a fight. CP has already been slinging mud. He bashes RP for raising his cash outside the district, yet has been asking for money outside of the district.

What a moron.

last year's endorsement

maybe you guys have seen this already

Look at the 4:50 mark here to see what Peden had said about Ron Paul.

I guess Politics changed Peden!!

We need a Ron Paul supporter

We need a Ron Paul supporter to run against Chris Peden and win his Friendswood council seat so Peden can experience some "blowback".

what a great idea

someone do it!

love it!!!!!!!

oh god. somebody please do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I sent Mr. Peden a letter

Dear Mr. Peden,

As a CPA it should be obvious to you that our nations’ balance sheet is in complete disarray. 9.2 Trillion dollars in debt can’t be erased by increasing the size of the federal budget and committing our nation to war for 100 years. Your character assassinations of Dr. Ron Paul as a self described Libertarian are meant to be divisive. You should join him in taking a stand for Liberty. It’s in the pledge of allegiance. It does not say with democracy and justice for all. I along with millions of other lifelong Republicans have had their faith in our Republic restored by Dr. Ron Paul. It would do you well to read his books before you cast him in a negative light. He is absolutely correct when he says that the Republicans have lost their way. Look at the 2006 elections. Republicans acting like liberal democrats for a republican idea is unacceptable to me and should be to you as well. We don’t need more big spending Republicans in office any more than we need big spending democrats. You see its “We the People” that have to pay! If you want to debate Ron Paul on the issues, that would be fine. But don’t attack the man who is actually bringing new Republicans into the party. I am a military veteran who supports Ron Paul for President. If I was in his district I would vote against you.

I have included a link from David M. Walker. As you may know is the head of the GAO. He has no political stake in this fight. He is simply doing his job. He has attempted to sound the alarm of our looming fiscal crisis but it has fallen on deaf ears. CPA’s such as you would better serve the nation by sounding the alarm of our potential financial collapse. That is your duty.

I for one think it is pathetic

It is pathetic that we can raise half a million dollars on a single mini-bomb day, but Ron's Congressional campaign is still struggling at around $250,000. This after he personally asked us for help. Regardless of whether you think having him in Congress makes that much difference, the fact is if the establishment can unseat him with a neo-con, they will paint it as total rejection of his message. We can't allow that to happen. For those who think he would do better with a lecture tour, he can STILL do that while in Congress. Congressmen do speeches all the time. And, our rEVOLution has succeeded in making him a celebrity... when he speaks in Congress now they can't ignore him. Especially with the network of millions he has built. He can send out the call and we can flood our Congress critters' phone lines when ever a bill he supports comes up, or one he is against needs to be voted down. Losing his Congressional seat is unthinkable people. Even if you are maxed out in his Presidential campaign, you can still donate to the Congressional one, and he isn't allowed to use any of the Presidential money for the Congressional campaign. So, now more than ever, we need a money bomb. He needed $400,000 by two days ago and isn't even close. If you support Dr. Paul, then support his wishes. And if not, then STFU.

Let it not be said that no one cared, that no one objected once it’s realized that our liberties and wealth are in jeopardy. -Ron Paul 7/10/03

I totally agree, I can not understand the struggle to get more

people to donate to this, I've donated and our family is struggling financially - yet to us it is incredibly important that Ron Paul beat that idiot neo-con running against him.

When it's all over and RP loses (let's hope not, but if he did) then everyone will rant and rave when it's too LATE!

Argh!

Our liberties and wealth are in jeopardy....

...and Ron Paul is NOT objecting on the stage best suited for ALL to hear - the PRESIDENTIAL campaign....as a THIRD PARTY.

Ron caring more about his congressional seat than the presidency (or the education of ALL americans) paints rejection all over this campaign/revoultion.

It is like pitching game One of the World Series, then turning down a game Seven start to become an announcer.

I care deeply. That's why whatever money I can scrape together will be going to a Libertarian candidate in the National campaign. I don't lve anywhere near Ron's congressional district, and he will be as ostracized as ever in Congress......a lonely voice of reason and conscience in a party and system gone mad.

Hey MORON if he loses his

Hey MORON if he loses his congressional seat guess what? WE WILL HAVE NO VOICE IN WASHINGTON.

Get third party out of you damn head it isn't going to happen.

Other 3rd parties are putting bloomberg on thier ticket idiot so what does that tell you about third parties now days. They are selling out just like the rest.

SGP...

Why didn't you stay gone when you ranted and raved and swore and freaked out about the blimp, campaign, etc. weeks ago and then threw a hissy fit with some huge letter saying you were essentially taking your ball and going home?

Changing your signature from "Dr. Steve" to "SGP" didn't seem to fix your crappy math, your bipolar mood, or your language.

If you are any kind of a real Dr., I am praying for your patients.

Bloomberg on the Libertarian ticket? Where do you get this crap?

bump.....

bump.....

The rally was great

It was just what we needed here in SE Texas to get us revved up again for the final push towards the March 4th primary. And it was hilarious to see the Peden campaign staff hanging around slack-jawed watching the Ron Paul supporters overwhelm the place. There was hardly any Peden support there at all. There must have been 2000 Ron Paul supporters and they were everywhere, even up and down the road outside holding sign waves on the highway and getting chased away by cops when they strayed off of the private property of the civic center.

Question: Were the Ron Paul

Question: Were the Ron Paul supporters all or mostly from his district?

Mostly from his district.

Mostly from his district.

Dondero is not a Libertarian...

Check this out:

Eric Dondero, Angleton, August 14, 2007, Political Consultant says ...
" Chris,

I hereby enthusiastically endorse you for Congress. Your pro-property rights/anti-tax views more closely represent the values of our South Texas District, than Ron Paul. Our current incumbent used to be more of a traditional limited government conservative. But now he's gone way out on the fringe, particularly on foreign policy issues.

I was going to run against my former boss. But why should I? YourPro-Defense/Pro-Tax Cut/Pro-Individual Liberty views reflect mine. I would be proud to have you represent me in Congress.

Eric Dondero, Fmr. Senior Aide
US Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX)
1997-2003

Who cares about Dondero? His real name is Eric Rittburg.

I don't want to waste my time reading about him. He is a real jerk and Dr. Paul should be very happy he got rid of him. Since he's endorsing Peden, what does that tell you about Peden? No one can hold a candle to Dr. Paul.

DO RUN RON!!!!!

I'd change my name too

If i had a name like Rittburg.

Dondero, and I have read

Dondero, and I have read many of his posts elsewhere, has gotten completely drunk on the Neocon kool-aid, cockroach flavor. His posts reflect a desperate desire to seek attention, and routinely disparage anything that could be called minimal-government beliefs. His seal of endorsement for this candidate tells me all I need to know about Chris Pedo.

Peden himself claims to not be libertarian

His whole point is that RP is claiming to be libertarian instead of "republican."

"I have an immense amount of respect for Ron Paul.

Politics has a way of forcing people to go against their core principles for political gain. That has never been the case for Ron Paul." Chris Peden in the Galveston Daily News 1/12/07. This was written by Mr. Peden last year and now he's flip-flopped saying nasty negative things about Dr. Paul. He's only hurting himself by bad mouthing Ron Paul. Dr. Paul will win his congressional seat as he's held it for 10 terms now. His record speaks for itself. Mr. Peden is no threat to him, maybe to himself. Dr. Paul is still running full force for the White House. What do we care about Mr. Peden anyway? Let's just concentrate on Dr. Paul. We are his supporters and he's the only one we're interested in and this post should not be of any interest to us anyway. Let's focus on Dr. Paul!

DO RUN RON!!!!!

I was at the event in Lake Jackson, Texas today

Ron Paul and Chris Peden had events at the same place and same time (different rooms).

Ron Paul had support coming out of his ears and a room twice as large as his opponent. His opponent couldn't even fill his small room and didn't have 1/10 the presence of Ron Paul.

In addition the crowd for Ron was twice as large as the large room could hold, so after the speach they carried a podium and PA system outside and Ron spoke to everyone again from the steps of the convention center. Now that was a sight to see :-)

It was a sunny day and just absolutely wonderful.

Everyone was in good spirits and Ron said he was committed to pursue both races to the end.

Lake Jackson Rally

Chris and Ron both gave a rally today in Lake Jackson at the Civic Center. I took a peek into Chris' room and seen about 30 people sitting quietly listening to a speech. Now compare that to about 1000 people listening to Pauls' speech. And then I find out that there were about a 1000 more outside the building that couldn't get inside, so Paul had to give another speech outside. Chris doesn't have a chance in hell. Also Paul quoted a great endorsement during his rally that came from Chris a year ago!

His attack on Dr Paul from this guys website

"I am a proven conservative Republican; the incumbent is a self-described Libertarian. I support winning the Global War on Terror and the War on Drugs; the incumbent does not. I think Islamo-Fascist terrorists were responsible for the 9/11 attacks; the incumbent thinks America's Middle East policy's were responsible for the attacks. I support fully funding NASA's budget and the Vision for Space Exploration; the incumbent does not. I will support and vote for the Republican nominee for U.S. President in 2008, the incumbent will not (unless it's him.)

As an elected official, Chris is a strong supporter of NASA and the space program. With the Johnson Space center less than 2 miles from CD 14, many NASA workers and contractors live in CD 14. Recently retired astronaut Eileen Collins is a resident of CD 14, as are many of her colleagues in the elite astronaut corp."

Okay now my name here is

Okay now my name here is obviously fictitious, its taken from 'King Of the Hill' you know the character probably, Dale Gribbel - his pseudonym is Rusty Shackelford when he's investigating the government from his basement on his laptop... anyway I was looking at the Chris Pedens website in his 'endorsements' and loe and behold:

Rusty Shackleford, Galveston TX, August 24, 2007, Pest control manager says ...
" I support Chris Peden for congress. "

What a dope to let that into his official endorsements. He's not for real and neither are those endorsements. It wasn't me thats for sure I never heard of the guy until today.

So you endorsed Peden?????

just kidding.

That's freekin' hysterical.

An right below Rusty

An right below Rusty Shackleford is that Eric Dondero twerp.

It might not be a bad thing for RP to lose that seat.

One seat of 435 does not mean squat, as all those 434-1 votes (with RP being the "1") while the GOP slid into statism proves.

Like an addict that is out of control, sometimes its best to just go ahead and let him/her hit rock bottom. I can think of nothing better than for the final flicker of liberty to go out in the Republican Party house, because perhaps that may be the straw that breaks the camel's back and a whole lot of people (many of them RP supporters) wake up and realize the Republican Party is not, never was, and never will be a friend to liberty.

I say we donate to RP's opponent and dance a jig on the grave of the Republican Party.

How dare you suggest

we donate to Ron Paul's opponent. You hate the Republicans so much go form your own party. Flagged.

I'd rather have a lone voice for liberty

in Congress,whether democrat or republican,or????
Even one voice,yes,it matters.
Again,it's not about dem or republican or even libertarian, except to the partisan rank and file, which RP supporters are not by this point. We know and see too much to 'go there' again. I hope.

Seriously?

I vehemently disagree. The republican party at one time did stand for liberty, its been hijacked by neo-cons and evangelicals. What we need to do is get the party to go back to its roots. Dr. Paul knows those roots, and he lives them and he votes them. We need more Dr Pauls in congress not less.

And suggesting we donate to Ron Paul's challenger on a Ron Paul web forum - when the good doctor asks us to donate to him so he can retain his seat - well that is mighty selfish and arrogant of you. What would the good doctor do once your plan worked? Go back to delivering babies and a lecture circuit instead of defending his beliefs on the floor of the U.S. House and excorciating his colleagues and calling them out for the sellouts they are?

I think Ill take my advice from Dr Paul and donate to him.

well, I wasnt serious about donating to his opponent,

I would never advocate that.

But I would say that I would not be totally unhappy if RP lost, inasmuch as I think the fact the RP is an elected Republican is doing a lot to enable a lot of people to think there is hope for the Republican party, when there is not. I'd rather he gets beat so there really is no illusions about what the Republican Party stands for, which is pretty much National Socialism, with RP being the ONLY exception to that rule.

And to repeat what I have said elsewhere, our goal should be to get this COUNTRY back to its roots, not the Republican Party. If the Republican Party will do that, then fine. But if not, we should have no qualms about dropping them without hesitation. You know what Bob Dylan said, "you gotta serve someone." I do not serve the Republican party. I serve the principles of liberty and freedom.

There are a LOT more of

There are a LOT more of those Congressmen paying attention to RP now. Lat vote was 400-35 or something. He is catching on!
