Does Ron Paul want to disband the FBI?

Anyone have any links on this that lay out his exact position? A Duncan Hunter supporter asked me about this, and I knew about it, but didn't have the answer as to how he would carry out federal law enforcement.

Thanks!

FBI new brain child

http://www.alternet.org/r... Infragard will be able to shoot to kill and no liability. Check it out.

he just wants to get rid of

he just wants to get rid of the secret activity of such programs... but he said he would keep them to collect intelligence.

It is not Constitutionaly authorized...

I have an acquaintance here in Asheville...he is a member of the US Secret Service...his favorite pick at his friends in the FBI is... " I sure like being a member of the only Constitutionally authorized branch of Federal Law Enforcement!"

Also you are flagged for your title

Your title is a lie and is flagged because it is meant to discredit Dr Paul. I suggest others do the same until it is changed.

Also YOU ARE FLAGGED

for your idiotic flagging of the above post. I hereby flag YOUR FLAG. IN PROTEST OF THE UNWARRANTED FLAGGING ACTIVITY. That has resulted in the original flag.,by the flagee or flagger...which ever is legal and binding in your state.
NoFreedom.....good name for you..

that's

a heckuva lotta flagging.

omg omg

you guys continue to eat your own. Grow up.

Happy now? I changed it.

You are wrong: it was not meant to discredit Dr. Paul. It was so I could get information to clarify the good doctor's position, nothing more.

Glenn Beck was the one who brought it up, and I do not recall RP specifically correcting Beck on it.

Relax.

Incorrect and a baldfaced lie

Ron Paul does NOT want to disband the FBI. This is the same propaganda garbage that the media has been pushing like the lie that Dr Paul wants to abolish Social Security when in fact, he is the only candidate that has always voted to NOT take a dime out of the Social Security fund. The media says these lies to make Dr Paul look like a radical fanatic.

Dr Paul wants to clean up the CIA because they are the ones who are covertly taking over countries and replacing leaders and this is a known fact. Dr Paul's exact words about the CIA is that they are "Rascals" and they are the ones that help stir things up all over the world. The FBI is an US agency that does NOT get involved with foreign countries and affairs and Dr Paul does NOT want to get rid of them.

Straighten your friend out quickly and tell him to quit believing the lieing media and quit letting them chose his candidate for him. If he wants to know where Dr Paul stands on the issues then give him his website.

I also need info on this

I also need info on this too. Can anyone provide a link for what RP would do about the FBI and CIA, I mean what would he replace them with as far as intelligence gathering? This is an area I've had a hard time countering when anti-RP people confront me and say RP would leave us blind without an FBI or CIA and open to more terrorist attacks. I say RP has to have a plan to cover intelligence gathering, but don't know what it is because I've never seen him lay out the details. Can't believe RP would have no intelligence gathering sources for the USA though, just need to see a link pointing to where he says what he'd do. I think RP needs to put this on his campaign website so that epople will stop spreading the rumor that RP wants to get rid of CIA and FBI an then leave us blind and in danger with no intelligence gathering domestically or overseas.

Here you go

http://youtube.com/watch?...

He explains the CIA position in detail too.

Thank you Noelle!

That's all I wanted - some clarification!

Let's Reign! (Rev. 5:10)

Thanks so much for this

Thanks so much for this link. I do wish that the official campaign website would get updated with a section on the CIA, FBI and intelligence gathering. That would help greatly to dispel rumors that RP is crazy because he wants to take away our intelligence gathering both domestic and foreign and would leave us in danger of more terrorist attacks that we could not see coming due to having no intelligence gathering. Wish I had this info before when confronted by anti-RP people. I was able to counter most of what they said, but this was one area where I ran into trouble.

I'll post a link to a video shortly here

where he makes his position clear.

It is really strange and incompetent that the campaign hasn't cleared up this longstanding rumor that have been hurting his campaign for so long. Paul himself didn't even clear it up when he was asked about it in a debate.

drug war? they facilitate the drug war

this is no conspiracy this is fact. how do you think all the drugs get here from some small cesna? its flown in on major airlines. i cant talk anymore but thats a fact i know. remember the movie american gangster they us to fly it in from vietnam on military planes but if you said to someone in the 60's and 70's they get it in thru the military they would have you commited.

Not entirely true

He doesn't want to disband the FBI. What he wants to do is pull the reigns in a little bit. He thinks they have overstepped their boundaries. So he wants to reel them back in to their true role.

I heard him say this in an interview, I don't recall which one though.

Obviously, Congress is in Charge

The FBI would not be needed to do much with the drug war, if that were ended, and many other things would be removed from their jurisdiction if we had constitutional government. But that's a philisophical position.

I think the main thing he would focus on would be stopping them from spying on us. They are often used as a political tool of the White House.

Don't let people challenge you with these type of questions. Just tell them such things are up to Congress, and whatever they may have heard, Ron Paul isn't expecting to be "the decider."

IMissLiberty

Constitutional position

This one is tough. Because the supreme court (rightly) decided that States do not have jurisidiction in crimes of interstate trade. Obviously, the Federal Government should have some sort of mechanism to deal with this, but it's not directly enumerated in the constitution (cmon the founders weren't perfect).

Well, the role of the FBI is not outlined in the constitution directly, it seems like that it should be stuffed into 'Necessary and proper'. Which is dangerous, since, that's the same clause used to justify the education department.

It's one of those things that probably should have a constitutional amendment, but doesn't (like judicial review of the supreme court)

WRT Ron Paul, I don't think he wants to immediately disband the FBI, after all, he doesn't want to immediately disband the FED, or the IRS, either -- which is a wise move.

He definitely wants to reduce some of the FBI activity (like RICO activity), and probably bring back some amount of propriety and due process (wiretapping stuff).

Interstate Trade falls under regualtory and police powers...

...of regulating interstate commerce. As such it should fall under that Department. Not the Justice Department and the FBI.

There is minimal federal law enforcement really needed (treason, counterfeiting, espionage) and the states should handle the rest.

"Welcome to 2008: The Year of Ron Paul!"

FBI is a result of big government

The only reason we have an FBI is because of the huge increase in federal crimes in comparison to when the constitution was created. If you reduced the federal government down to constitutional levels, you wouldn't need the FBI that we know of today. You could still have an agency like the FBI, but its power would be severely reduced, and it wouldn't be looked at as a gang of thugs like it is today. I would rather the FBI be used to protect our rights rather than violate them.

Some of the things the FBI does unconstitutionally:

provide assistance to local forces.

investigate in-state crimes.

provide assistance to Mythbusters when they blow stuff up (yeah, I love it though).

not overnight

all he wants (and I want) can't happen overnight.

One problem I'm having with a couple friends is their knee-jerk fear of who's going to protect them. And they're supposedly rugged individualists! ugh.

he wants to consolidate over thirty intelligence agencies

to become streamlined into 2 or 3 - where it would help bring down costs but also have intelligence under one roof where vital information can be interpreted quicker and more accurately to make better decisions (example of of this is 9/11 where multiple agencies had info before hand but being they were seperate they didnt share it with each other and nobody was able to put 2 and 2 together -whereas if it was just one or two agencies it could have easily forewarned of 9-11 and prevented it )
Homeland security is the opposite what it has done is create even more bureaucracy where it will take even more time to decipher intelligence or prevent aid from arriving to help americans in need of disaster relief(re:Katrina ) hope this helps

He wants to limit its scope.

Along with the CIA. He wants to SHRINK both agencies and have their actions be more tranparent and constitutional. For now!

Not the FBI

there's one agency that he will drastically thin out, though. But not the FBI.

"He who exercises government by means of his virtue may be compared to the north polar star, which keeps its place and all the stars turn towards it." Confucius

I don't remember the quote in the interview exactly

But he called for disbanding the FBI, scaling down the CIA and using the military more for intelligence.

Edited. I was wrong, he said specifically that the FBI is fine, but the CIA needs to be scaled down and integrated into the military as far as intelligence gathering goes.

I saw him say he would NOT eliminate the FBI

I'll look for the video.

It was after a speech broadcast on CSPAN and people from the audience were asking him questions. It was around 2 months ago.

I second that.

I have also seen him say that he would not eliminate the FBI after he was directly asked a question about it. Somewhere on youtube..

Problem with the FBI is

there are almost no federal crimes to be solved at all. Look at the constitution.

Congress has no power to make half the laws it makes, so the FBI has no corresponding authority to investigate and prosecute those who violate them.

Don't remember where

but I saw him say that he does want to get rid of the CIA and FBI and then humorously eluded that we would still need to do the investigative and intelligence gathering functions, maybe in a newly created department, but certainly it would not include any nation building, drug wars or putting any dictators in power around the world.
