I am both amused and disgusted at the names used to describe some of these acts/operations/etc... like "The Patriot Act" (which facilitates government surveillance over patriots.) or "Operation Iraqi Freedom" (which was this government's usurpation of Iraqi sovereignty.) and now the "Global Poverty Act"... ughhh... sounds like an attempt to spread poverty around the world...

The overwhelming majority in congress are too cowardly to call out such obviously veiled power phrases for the evils they are actually describing. Why is that?

Obama may have politically undesirable ideas but in the current landscape the GOP is no different. In the short term voting Demarcate can be used to undermine the GOP and weaken the current leadership, helping us set up a new constitutional leadership in the GOP.

I live in California, which is the most populated state in the country and IS BANKRUPT! In the Bay Area the schools are over-crowded, poorly staffed, old and in disrepair. There are NO school buses (only for handicapped) and they are firing teachers and cutting classes and programs because of serious budget problems! All of this in the area that boasts the highest rents, property values and gas prices in the country!

I for one am sick to death of our government taking on all of the world's problems while we SERIOUSLY NEGLECT our own people! Most of all our children, who will be the future of this country!

Obama bill: $845 billion more for global poverty Democrat sponsors act OK'd by Senate panel that would cost 0.7% of gross national product.

Sen. Barack Obama, perhaps giving America a preview of priorities he would pursue if elected president, is rejoicing over the Senate committee passage of a plan that could end up costing taxpayers billions of dollars in an attempt to reduce poverty in other nations.

The bill, called the Global Poverty Act, is the type of legislation, "We can – and must – make … a priority," said Obama, a co-sponsor.

He said the legislation, if approved, dedicates 0.7 percent of the U.S. gross national product to foreign aid, which over 13 years he said would amount to $845 billion "over and above what the U.S. already spends."

A statement from Obama's office this week noted the support offered by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

"With billions of people living on just dollars a day around the world, global poverty remains one of the greatest challenges and tragedies the international community faces," Obama said. "It must be a priority of American foreign policy to commit to eliminating extreme poverty and ensuring every child has food, shelter, and clean drinking water. As we strive to rebuild America's standing in the world, this important bill will demonstrate our promise and commitment to those in the developing world.

"Our commitment to the global economy must extend beyond trade agreements that are more about increasing profits than about helping workers and small farmers everywhere," he continued.

"It is time the United States makes it a priority of our foreign policy to meet this goal and help those who are struggling day to day," a statement issued by supporters, including Obama, said.

Specifically, it would "declare" that the official U.S. policy is to eliminate global poverty, that the president is "required" to "develop and implement" a strategy to reach that goal and requires that the U.S. efforts be "specific and measurable."

Kincaid said that after cutting through all of the honorable-sounding goals in the plan, the bottom line is that the legislation would mandate the 0.7 percent of the U.S. GNP as "official development assistance."

"In addition to seeking to eradicate poverty, that (U.N.) declaration commits nations to banning 'small arms and light weapons' and ratifying a series of treaties, including the International Criminal Court Treaty, the Kyoto Protocol (global warming treaty), the Convention of Biological Diversity, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and the Convention of the Rights of the Child," he said.

Those U.N. protocols would make U.S. law on issues ranging from the 2nd Amendment to energy usage and parental rights all subservient to United Nations whims.

Kincaid also reported Jeffrey Sachs, who runs the "Millennium Project," confirms a U.N. plan to force the U.S. to pay 0.7 percent of GNP would add about $65 billion a year to what the U.S. already donates overseas.

Well, I obviously disagree with global taxation of any kind. One thing I do like in Obama’s platform is his idea to go after pharmaceutical companies, although I may not agree with his direct limitation of profits, I can't think of another way to punish these pharmaceuticals besides fines and levies. I believe that they are in collusion with the government, monopolistic, that they price gouge Americans, over medicate the elderly, and make up all sorts of new phony illnesses, like PAD, RLS, ADD, ADHD etc. I believe that all this medication is harming more people than it helps.

That is why I am more of a populist than a Libertarian. I don’t always believe in total extreme capitalism, especially when it is a multi-national company that is more like a government than an individual with unalienable rights. What about all the money and privileges these large companies receive from government? Is that not a form of socialism? I also believe that government can and must legislate morality in certain circumstances. Government should almost certainly instill dread in evildoers, like murderers, for example. This last point is in line with John Locke's ideas on constitutionalism, in my opinion.

Well, I see two reasons to vote for him. I don't care for him. I care for what he represents as an object. People support him because they think he will changes things. I want those people to feel supported because those people are the next best thing to us. They are more people for our "army." Considering that, I see a vote for him as, one, a repudiation of Bush and, two, once he fails at real change the people who supported him will leave and search for something different and better (though not necessarily Paul but something).

In regards to the United Nations Millennium Declaration and and the Global Poverty Act.

In regards to idea of elimination of small arms part of the inititive:

I fear if this goes into effect and there is an attempted collection of small arms in the US there will be a huge loss of life and limb to military members, police, and the civilian population.
I am a law abiding citizen, but I feel obligated to inform you of my stance on this issue and I need you to know if this goes into effect I will not willing give up my right to bare arms, and I know MANY people that have the same stance as I do. Many of these are in the military and civilian population, and will defend the right to bear arms to the death, so I ask that you do not support any bill that supports these initiatives, and hopefully prevent what ever may come about if these ideas/bills come to fruition in the United States.
