Berkley in the Sixties.....Great Video (documentary) and Ideas for our March on Washington

I am watching a great documentary that I just rented from my local video rental outlet. It was in the documetaries section. It is all about the student protests during the 60's at Berkley. What is interesting to hear is that the people involved that are now being interviewed said that the protests only gathered steam once there was a broad coalition that rallied around one single cause and that was civil rights. One leader of the movement said that it was so interesting that students for Goldwater and groups from the far left and other disparate ideologies all came together on the issue of civil liberties and yet before this time they couldnt even sit at the same table and have a debate or argument about politics.

This video is definitely worth watching to see how these demonstrations were spontaneous and long lasting.

Why can't our March on Washington use this same strategy. Lots of music (they had Joan Baez) lots of different political stripes but one single issue and that is LET'S GET BACK OUR BILL OF RIGHTS!

Go ahead and rent it if you can.

Cheers

So would

So would it not be effective than to rally around a specific cause, like the patriot act? Or somthing of that nature.

The Seeds of Truth we Plant today will grow to be the Tree of Freedom tommorow.

It's great to March on Wahington ..........But what are we for

After the documentary there were conversations with some of the protesters ( who look a lot older than there pictures in the 60's) and what I could gather from these folks was that.....Yes the 60's protests were somewhat effective but they did lack a positive program or better said, they didnt have a coherent poitive philosophy that the larger population could identify with.

This is where we in the Ron Paul freedom movement must be vigilant to never lose sight of what we are Marching FOR. We are not simply AGAINST the status quo...... We actually have a coherent message of Peace, Prosperity and Freedom by adhering to the founding document of this country. Truly limited government in foreign and domestic policy and otherwise devolve power back to the states and the people themselves. The trouble I have with this is that even this narrow but positive program might be too overwhelming for a non Paulian to grasp and thus get behind. I am shocked at how many people I know that just don't beleive we ccould survive without a large and intrusive Federal Government. I am utterly amazed by the lack of conviction that people have in general about being free to choose their own path and of course be responsible for it.

After wathcing the video I can see that our movement is so different than the portest movement of the 60's

March..

..to restore the Constitution.

Good video

I have it on VHS tape somewhere. Remember VHS tape? Still comes in handy!

The activism in Berkeley during the 1960s - mirrored somewhat later by the activism in Boston - was a product of its time. Civil Rights was the motivating factor - hotel workers were not being treated fairly and there were protests. This, I think, sparked the protest movements that were to come later. The hotel workers strike/protest was the first of its kind.

First, Civil Rights, then the War, then the Draft.

For a while I thought there was a resurgence of activism around the Ron Paul campaign, and there is, but nothing at all like the stuff that happened on college campuses during the 1960s. Virtually every college was a hotbed of activism in one sense or another and there was a very palpable sense of justice and fairness. There was also a lot of anger, strident voices and pot.

Yes, the RP supporters are earnest and hardworking. The cause is a fine one; Paul's platform is more necessary now than ever before - including the Sixties. But there is little anger, particularly on college campuses. Most students are busy with other things and, consequently, are missing a great opportunity to save the Nation.

However, if the war escalates and a Draft is instituted (Senator Lieberman sponsored the Bill) then we might possibly see some real activism.

In the meantime...

I'm glad to finally!! see this subject come up . I was born in the 50s,I remember the marches, sit in"s, pickets, peace ralleys and people chaining them selves to monuments for a cause. I cant think of a better cause than this! When Americans come together as one, ITS A BEAUTIFUL THING! God Bless Dr Paul
