Amtrak to Increase Gestapo Patrols

My fiance came to visit me in NC from NYC a few days before 9/11 (I had just re-located a few weeks before) and when we went to the airport on 9/10, his flight was cancelled.

As we thought about it at the reservation desk, (we originally re-scheduled his flight for 9/11 at 8:30) we changed it till later on in the afternoon so I would not have to awaken my young son so early. Of course he never made that flight.

He was unable to get back to NY for over a week, until we finally got him on AMTRAK. I remember being worried that day.

Is it bad for AMTRAK to at least run the baggage through an xray or metal detector? I agree that the whole checking of ID thing is stupid - What will that do anyway? But at least check the bags - I'm not sure I find anything wrong with that.

A few months ago, my daughter was traveling on the Lakeshore Limited when the train stopped outside of Buffalo. For hours. The Border Patrol went through, checking passengers' identifications.

This is unbelievable in America---but it is true. I guess I know now, how other people have felt in totalitarian nations. It didn't take an outright coup (unless you count the 2000 election---and maybe we should!), but there sure doesn't seem to be any way to stop the police state now.

Why do I feel so much less secure than I did even a few years ago? I have lived through the McCarthy era, and through the Cointelpro era (Hoover had me rated as a Category I subject on the ADEX list, for a while. That was the list of people supposed to be picked up in a state of emergency.) But the gangsters who are running this regime, in 2008, make those old guys look like the proverbial Girl Scouts.

And Congress doesn't have even a fraction of the number of brave members(always a minority) who used to object to subversion and abrogation of civil liberties.

Worst of all, as an ex-felon I can't even get into Canada anymore. Don't Americans WANT to live in a free country? Oh, I suppose they do, but they succumb to fear and intimidation. Or they kid themselves. Milton Mayer once wrote a book about the Germans under the Nazis, to which he gave the title: "They Thought They Were Free."

Carry beef sticks in an open package in the top of your bag to piss off the dog handlers. The dog is bound to go nuts.
