Trust me, the bankers, with the fractional reserve banking system did much better than we did. I am concerned about my assets just as you are. We are fighting a much greater issue than this. without destroying the economy. when the economy goes we then have the social problems... Riots, famine, crime etc.. then comes the idiots either demodummy or rino repug-lican to enforce martial law.. goodbye constitution and bill of rights.. some folks don't think it can happen... boooshh set up all the executive orders and signing statements so it can.. he gave the office of the presidency tictatorial powers... the government KNOWS whats coming! NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE FOR YOUR FAMILY. the more of us that prepare the easier it will be.. then we can take our country back.
What to do?
I am getting different opinions from people that I trust on what is going to happen: anything from a minor recession to total economic collapse. The fact is that no one knows for sure what the future will bring -- even with all variables being known, which they are not. It is possible that there could be a major natural disaster, another major war, or a terrorist attack that could destabilize things further.
What I do know is that our economy is not sustainable. It will have to take a major correction at some point as we finally pay the bills we have been incurring for the past few decades. It may happen this year. It may not happen for a couple more decades.
So what do we do? I am following the advice I have heard for years and have seen repeated on this site as well:
If the economy collapses, I will have a good head start to sustain my family through the dark times. If the economy slows for a small period of time and recovers, I can always eat the food I have stored, a garden will save on food costs, and solar panels will reduce my electricity bill (and give me an option for those periodic power outages we get here in Michigan). It doesn't hurt to be prepared, and it might just save your family and enable you to help those around you who did not prepare as you did.
These are things we probably all should do anyway. It is just now some of us have more incentive to do it now -- just in case.

Not too bad
We live just south of Grand Rapids, so things are not as bad here as they are over by Detroit. I was fortunate enough to have moved here after the first big downturn in the housing market, so we are not looking too bad. My wife had family in the area that drew us to Michigan though I myself am a westerner (Montana). We took advantage of the high real estate prices in Montana and depressed prices in Michigan to reduce our home loan significantly (less than $30,000 as of today). I also figured Michigan could always use a few more good Republicans. ;-)

I'm an east coast gal myself relocated also which reduced the LTV and yes, Michigan needs a bunch more Republicans et hem....especially at high levels *W
We buy auto insurance on a .16% chance of an accident.
So I consider it kinda the same... call it a survival insurance.. ;)
Besides, I've found that living this way is a lot less stressful.. so technically you're improving your longetivity!

Economic crisis will be in the form of a minor recession mostly due to housing and sub prime mortgage crisis..Still a lot of good profits being reported, like HP...January and Feb always crappy for retailers

Economics is mostly theory....No one will be totally wrong or totally right about anything....and not "every" economist is predicting a major recession, they simply point out that if things align a certain way this or that will happen..No one has a crystal ball and the world is a complicated place....it is fun to make predictions though and see how they play out
