but if we get a brokered convention, anything could happen: Fred Thompson, Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich might announce themselves as compromise candidates. That's why we need as many delegates as possible.
The NYT story does nothing but help his campaign. If he can fight these petty accusations into September, then he won't be required to focus on the issues.
The NYT story is all but dead already. It's impact has fizzled quite a bit. There's still some buzz, but it's getting pushed to the shadows. Newsweek picked up on the story, but no one paid too much attention, because instead of the American people looking for the real issue, they were looking for a sexual scandal. The relationship between Iseman and McCain was mentioned only to keep the NYT readers interested in the story to read all of it.
The real story is how McCain denied any direct contact with any lobbyist. Newsweek, one day after the NYT story, printed a sworn affidavit McCain had entered in a lawsuit five years ago, that said Paxson had called him personally and they talked, after which McCain sent his demanding letter to the FCC asking Paxson be allowed to own multiple media outlets in the same city.
The whole story is that McCain is a liar, and his own words prove it. Also, NYT wanted to point out from McCain's memoirs that he has consistently been persuaded to act in corrupt ways, only to apologize after realizing how gullible he is.
Go on Townhall.com, or write editorials. The pressure for the truth must be persistent. They will try to sweep this under the rug, but I think it's true that the article was just a feint to expose the facts in the most inept and least damaging way to their boy.
But truly this story does have legs and if someone really runs with it they would find lots of new charges and questions that will demand answers. Then the ever-eloquent McCain will show his true colors.
The most important thing, I think, is to keep McCain from pulling the full delegate count. I hope Dr.Paul does well in TX, but if not, then at least maybe the Huckster will.
The NYT is owned by Murdoch, ok? They had the story in December...held it at McCain's "request", endorsed him, KNOWING about this, then spring it on him...emphasizing the alleged sex angle and not the REAL issue of the story, mind you.
WE have dug up better, and more recent, dirt on McPain...think the NYT could have done the same? Of course they could....
The McCain camp figures that the reason the conservatives won't hop aboard the "Straight talk express" is due to the NYT endorsement...
With the power of the Internet, Dr Paul supporters and Huck supporters injecting pressure on the McCain camp, I'd say it's over for McCain my friends.
The republican establishment will make one final hard push to rush McCain through, but there is just so much baggage, it will be futile.
The theory I have is someone with common sense will approach him and say "John, you're considered somewhat of a war hero to some, let's not risk losing both the presidency and your war image. Save your war image and get out."
Why on earth would McCain drop out.? He's winning.
I know that optimism is a good thing, but in the race for the GOP presidential nomination, McCain is winning and we are losing. There's a fine line between "optimism" and "wishful thinking".
Is McCain almost certainly going to lose the election in November? Oh yes. But why would he drop out of a primary race he's winning over a little bad Press..?

Things are unraveling very quickly for McCain and the RNC, we are still 6 months out from the convention and he has already lost enough credibility and momentum that he may not recover. Even if he makes it to St. Paul he will be a very wounded candidate, if the convention is brokered or deadlocked in anyway he is finished. On the other hand the campaigns of Dr. Paul and Mike Huckabee are feeling mighty sprite these days, both have their gameface on and the mainstream media is taking notice. I just don't see a comeback for McCain and there is still enough time to dump him and install a new candidate in his place, I think it might happen soon.
because this is simply the tip of the iceberg. There's plenty more coming. Then you will see the NY Times printing storys that they have been vindicated for publishing the first one.
That's a good point. Either way, we win. My guess is that four reputable reporters and the New York Times are correct. McCain also has the FEC and FCC breathing down his neck. Pressure is being put on him to drop out now before things get ugly. Powerful people in the GOP do not want John McCain to win the nomination because they know it will mean the end of the Republican party.
My guess is McCain will be forced to drop out of the race soon after he loses Texas and Ohio. He does not have enough money to pay off his own debt, and doesn't have enough time to raise money to sustain his campaign. I think he knows Obama would crush him in a general election. So why be dragged through the mud, ruin your reputation and go broke at the same time...all to lose?
McCain can see the writing on the wall. He won't make it past March.
Um, McCain is winning handily and has a 99.99% chance of winning the Republican nomination. He is up HUGE in both Texas and Ohio according to the most recent polls. And he will probably have the nomination officially wrapped up after March 4. And he is ahead of Obama in today's new Rasmussen tracking poll. So why in the world would McCain drop out of a race in which he is certain to win? Do you know how ridiculous you sound?
for RP to be the GOP nominee! Right?
The only thing that is not making sense is why all of a sudden Limbaugh and Buchanan warming up to McCain. Republicans do fall in line.
Actually it makes perfect sense for Limbaugh. His support for George W. Bush has proven that--while he self-identifies with conservatism strongly--he is a Republican first and a conservative second.
That doesn't mean we should scorn him...he's probably the closest thing in the Establishment we have to being a "friend". If ever there was a time for Paulians to reach out to Limbaugh, now is that time. If Rush blasted McCain and Huckabee strongly while warming to Ron Paul, it could make a difference in upcoming primaries. If we're going to play the "Republican strategy" we need Limbaugh on our side badly.

as he is simply analyzing him. Buchanan's current job on MSNBC is not as a commentator or editorialist, but as a political analyst. By the same token you claim PJB is warming up to McInsane, it could be argued he is warming up to Hillary.
As an analyst, you analyze: tell what you see as good, what you see as bad, and yes even offer advice on matters, but this is not the same as personally supporting someone. Buchanan's personal views on McCain have been well-expressed in his columns, which *are* editorial in nature.

This entire NYT thing is a psy op to get a common enemy
and get the conservatives to defend McCain against the evil liberal NYT.
It is all complete BS and psycological manipulation.
Ummmm....
Hate to break it to you but McCain ain't going anywhere. The flak he's getting from the NYT is just going to help him shore up the conservative base.
I just hope we can eek out a brokered convention so the Paul stealth delegates can give those jerks a run for their money.
