Lets give the house a pat on the back

"WASHINGTON - President Bush said Saturday that Democratic leaders in the House are blocking key intelligence legislation so trial lawyers can sue phone companies that helped the government eavesdrop on suspected terrorists after the Sept. 11 th attacks.

Terrorists are plotting new attacks against America "at this very moment," Bush said in renewing his call for the House to pass legislation needed to renew the intelligence law that expired last weekend.

The Senate bill, which passed 68-29, provides retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies that wiretapped American phone and computer lines at the government's request, but without the permission of a secret court created 30 years ago to oversee such activities. The House version does not provide immunity for the companies against lawsuits."

Lets email these folks and let them know we are behind them on this one. We don't want them changing their minds or being swayed at this point.

What we need to do...

in light of the new scare tactic from the prez is to:

Write the Congress to let them know that the immunity provision is completely unneccessary, given the fact that the Supreme Court shot down the ACLU lawsuit...

http://www.linuxinsider.com/story/security/61724.html?welcom...

Their basis for this decision is that one could not PROVE that they were "spied on"....they can't prove that, because the administration refuses to supply records...see the catch-22?

Given this, the retroactive immunity is a non-issue..they don't need it, because no one can PROVE anything.

Anyone Have the Votes?

Breakdown of how the vote went by congressperson? I certainly don't want to praise my congressman if he voted for the bill.
Say YES to Dr. NO

Say YES to Dr. NO

c'mon people...maybe the result was good

but the motivations were not. The dems voted "no" because they promote the interests of trial lawyers. LOL. Says it right at the top of the article, so don't get all in a tizzy praising these corrupt people like Dodd. They are acting in brazen self-interest. John Edwards is a trial lawyer and lives in like a 20,000 square foot estate, so when he votes "no" on this, it means more money for his friends.

Just a different brand of corruption.

One Area Where Trial Lawyers Are Helpful

Gee, this lawyer bashing is beside the point. Not EVERY time a lawyer is involved means that there's "corruption." Any time a lawyer goes to court to protect the Bill of Rights, he or she is doing something good. The lawyer gets paid? Well, boo f'n hoo! Ron Paul himself has advocated legal enforcement of rights on many occasions. I'm not going to sacrifice my freedom just so I have the dubious satisfaction of depriving "those greedy lawyers" of making money. We need to be able to enforce our rights. Punishing lawyers is not what I would consider a constitutional objective, and lawyer-bashing is simply another tactic to manipulate those into giving up any enforcement mechanism that might actually be useful. I don't care if their motives are "mixed" -- Hooray for the lawyers who defend liberty!

well, if you can't smell political year special interests

that's your problem. As soon as a dem gets in there, the same guys whining about this will vote to end your rights in a simliar manner or in even more manners.

Please, liberty defending lawyers my ***, not in the socialist party, thank you.

You're Confused

Liberty defending lawyers are socialists? What kind of goofiness is this? Did you listen to Ron Paul's speech tonight? You can't have government have private industry do it's infringing, and then grant them exemption from liability. You're falling victim to the MSM phony "partisanship" game. Uh, no thanks, if I have to line up with the lawyers taking away my liberty, or the ones defending it, I'll take the latter.

hmm

You may be right, but I read that as Bush trying to get his way.

Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn.
“The president has no right to secretly eavesdrop on the conversations and activities of law-abiding American citizens," Dodd said. "Anyone who has aided and abetted him in these illegal activities should be held accountable." http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2007-10-18-dodd-fisa...

Bump

Its never about us. Its always about special interests. In this case for trial lawyers. I will not send e-mail to praise them. We need to create a website to track their voting records, so we can send e-mail, donations etc. from one location. They will only work for us only if their seat is threaten or receive donation.

Good Idea

That would be nice if we had a site that tracked the voting records of our representitives. We could mobilize behind people that were voting in accordance with the constitution.

Me personally I don't care what the Dem's motives were, they still did the right thing by acting out against this legislation.

Chris Dodd is such a blow-hard

that sounds good and all, but the guy is so slimy. It's hip for the socialist dems to be against anything Bush is...that's vogue. He'll vote for the same crap when Hussein Osama Obama offers it up.

Exactly

Trying to find it now...

Sen. Dodd D-Conn Voted no http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2007-10-18-dodd-fisa...

Yes please

Email Congress with your encouragement and thanks for not letting Bush's new spying initiative go through. Here in AZ I've been seeing ads for Rep. Gabrielle Gifford's new Senate race. She's placing ads about Congress not caring enough for your safety since they refused to vote for the new and improved patriot act. This is her re-election platform. Its really disgusting because she got ads all over the local tv.

Laugh At The Liar

"Terrorists are plotting new attacks against America "at this very moment," Bush said"

So, if we do a "correct" analogy of what he is sayin' we come to the conclusion that the "CFR and his Administration, etc." is plottin' again or is he referrin' to the attackin' of Iran again. Beats me!

Laugh, did I miss the point of this.

It's true!!Well, if you

It's true!!

Well, if you look at what they define as "terrorist" and what they define as "attack", it is...

H.R. 1959 implys that people like US are the "terrorists", and our PEACEFUL attempts to change the broken system are the "attacks".... that's why they need to listen to our phone calls and record our internet usage. That's why the telecoms need retroactive immunity--if they were only listening to foreign calls, they would be secure under the FISA bill as it stands.

Edit: I got the bills mixed up... HR1955 passed the house....S1959 is "in committee"...
