MARK SANFORD for Vice President!
Submitted by davidg11 on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 20:18
If you listen to the MSM, everyone is focusing on who McCain will choose for VP. One of the names which comes up a lot is Mark Sanford.
Who is Mark Sanford?
Wikipedia:
"While in Congress, Sanford was a staunch conservative (he garnered a lifetime rating of 92 from the American Conservative Union), but displayed an occasional independent streak. He often would be one of two members of Congress, along with Ron Paul, voting against bills that otherwise got unanimous support."
Mark Sanford is the two-time governor of SC.
I joined the Ron Paul movement because I'm a fiscal conservative. I've been a moderate republican all my life. I really didn't think too much about how much money was money wasted on foreign policy until Ron Paul brought it to my attention. And since I didn't see any other fiscal conservatives in the Republican race, Ron Paul was/is it.
That will change with me however if McCain is wise enough to bring in a young, fiscal conservative like Mark Sanford as his VP running mate. I don't know much about Mark's views on foreign policy except for a few quips, and they seem fine.
Remember, McCain is an old guy and anything can happen to him physically or mentally. I can see Ron Paul declaring he won't support the republican nominee for president but would gladly support the nominee for VP if its Mark Sanford.
Here are some things on Mark's foreign policy:
Voted NO on $156M to IMF for 3rd-world debt reduction. (Jul 2000)
Voted NO on Permanent Normal Trade Relations with China. (May 2000)
Voted NO on $15.2 billion for foreign operations. (Nov 1999)
Reform of the IMF and the World Bank: Hearing before the Joint Economic Committee Congress of the United States, 106th Congress, Second Session, April 12, 2000
The Center For National Policy: Issues in U.S.-Cuba Policy, Washington D.C., November 2000
Sanford speaks in favor of lifting U.S. embargo of Cuba.

Anyway RonPaulites, there are conservative, more "mainstream" candidates out there to consider.
If Mark Sanford becomes VP and then President.....which libertarian conservative does he choose to be his VP?

Sanford was a member of the
Sanford was a member of the Liberty Caucus along with Dr. Paul, and he has been a somewhat good governor of our state. I was surprised that Sanford endorsed McCain and a coupling of the two would do Sanford little good unless McCain killed over in office.

This guy is CFR through and through, he can't be too smart, he can't even see hand signals going on in his office.
Does RP have any OP's (CFR Members) on deck?

Never mind.
After looking at Sanford, I don't think he is a libertarian.
I think that it does not matter who McCain might pick, assuming he gets the nomination. I will not vote for him.
Hello Libertarian Party.
OH, here we are again
Hmmmm, what happened here? You didn't like the way the other post was going, so you started a new one. You just must force this board to think about something besides Ron Paul winning, don't you. Oooooops, guess it is time to start a new post.
bump
bump....
He endorsed McCain
not Ron Paul so....nuff said! Doesnt make McCain any more palatable to me and I have less respect for Sanford for not standing by his principles.

He hasnt endorsed anybody
He hasnt endorsed anybody yet..oddly enough i recieved this e-mail today which is a response to an e-mail i sent to him BEFORE the SC primaries..anyway..
Dear Mr. Grant,
Now that the South Carolina Republican primary is over, I am finally turning my attention to all the folks, including you, who contacted Governor Sanford about which candidate they felt he should support. As you probably know, the Governor did not endorse anyone. This was not because he was without preference (although he did not share his preference with me), but because endorsing someone, in his book, means going "all out" to work for victory, which includes making speeches and going to other states among other things. With our legislative session under way, and with so many crucial issues to face like tougher DUI laws, immigration reform, controlling state spending, eliminating waste, and improving our education system, to mention just a few, Governor Sanford believed he would be stretching himself too thin to go on the road supporting a GOP candidate. His concern was that it would hurt his efforts here, and his commitment is to this administration. Thanks for taking the time to write.
Sincerely,
Tom Davis

Actually he didn't endorse McCain...yet
As far as I know, Mark Sanford hasn't endorsed McCain in 2008.
He endorsed McCain back in 2000 over George Bush when McCain was actually normal.
McCain of 2008 isn't the same McCain of 2000.
And in retrospect, don't you believe McCain would have made a better president than George Bush in 2000? I don't think we'd be in Iraq today if McCain were elected in 2000. Iran? maybe...but not Iraq.

Meet the man that should be McCain's VP candidate.
No, its not Ron Paul, but again, you're going to have a choice of a tax and spend democrat who is going to continue the Iraq war or McCain who will also continue the war, but HOPEFULLY a fiscal conservative with him like this Sanford who may be a dove and not a hawk.
Since he's a republican who wants to end the embargo on Cuba, I'm guessing a dove.

BTW, Sanford endorsed McCain in 2000, and currently still hasn't endorsed anyone.
No thanks.
Sanford had his chance with me leading up the the South Carolina primary. If he says "no thanks" to McCain, I might give him another chance, but if he accepts the veep spot, then he's definitely not my type.

McCain will have to pick female/minority VP
It's the only way to counter the Dems.
Most likely (but not ONLY) option would be Condi Rice.
IMHO, that's one of the whole reasons she was elevated to Secretary of State not that long ago. It wasn't to "reward" her, it was to "elevate" her in preparation for the need of a female/minority person on the ticket.
Sanford COULD have impressed me had he endorsed RP... that he DIDN'T speaks volumes about his ambitions.
But IMHO, regardless of whether Sanford is selected as the VP candidate, even if RP nation all fell behind them, I still cannot see the GOP ticket winning this election with two White Men (even if McCain WERE able to switch to an anti-war stance, it would be likely to be damaging [flip-flop], would be unlikely to be believed, and even LESS likely to be implemented).
Last but not least, I think even McCain knows that unless his skin is bulletproof, he cannot select some RP-like person as his VP... it would be too great a temptation to some "lone gunman" out there.
There is a vision of hell
I would call it absurd, but then who ever imagined that a Bush endorsement would be considered a good thing, either?
Absurd? I agree... but McCain as the GOP nominee is absurd.
And GWB selecting the guy he selected to select someone as his VP was also "absurd" (especially since at the time they were both residents of the same state and therefore could NOT legally be on the same ticket as P and VP).
Absurd does not bother politicians.
I disagree
I disagree. I don't think McCain needs a "token" black or woman to round out his ticket it will seem too transparent what he's trying to do. "Oh, you have a black nominee, dems? well let me get one too!..hell I'll do one better!, a black woman!"
I think the reason why the republican primaries have been so lacking in overall votes is because no one excites them. There is no fiscal conservative out there besides Ron Paul.
Sanford, on the other hand, is mainstream enough to be accepted, even cheered by those looking for a Reaganesqe VP candidate.
Rice will be damaged by one thing. She got that memo and read the memo that said "Bin Laden intends to attack american soil" and said that it wasn't an urgent threat before 9-11. No republican is going to like that, and the dems would have a field day. PLUS there aren't a lot of conservative blacks out there, so who's voting for her?
You're thinking LOGICALLY...
McCain will not.
He will go for the "token" black woman who will ALSO bring the "conservatives" on board (they lurve Condi).
Sanford is also for the environment

Sanford could have endorsed
Dr.Paul, but didn't. He may be somewhat "fiscally conservative" but Sanford is not a Ron Paul supporter.
h-daddy
It's a ruse to get Ron Paul supporters
It's a ruse to get Ron Paul supporters. Don't fall for it.

In this article they talk about only 3 congressmen who voted against the breast awareness stamp. Which presidential nominee do you think was one of those three congressmen with Sanford?
You again

But yeah, I'd almost vote for McNasty if he'd pick Sanford. Almost.
