Masters of War
MASTERS OF WAR
by Bob Dylan
Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks
You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly
Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain
You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud
You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins
How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do
Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul
And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

Wow, that was
very insightful.
Yup..
.. doesn't leave a whole lot left to be said.
That made me cry...
Remember the past as you look forward to today...
Me too...
kinda angry and sad at the same time.

That's the first video of that song I've ever heard about. Good one too.

Masters of War
Arlo is on board, where is Dylan???
Dylan never would do
Dylan never would do anti-war performances. And never would say he was anti-war. He said he had friends who supported the Vietnam war and that he respected them.
He's still that way today. He says he has pastor friends who are pro-war and he respects their decision. Dylan has said he doesn't believe performing songs can end any war.
His song Masters of War clues us in on what he really thinks though. I think his message in the song is so powerful and maybe so complete that there is really nothing else to be said about the topic from his perspective?
Dylan was a Goldwater supporter back in the 70's so he definitely has a libertarian conservative streak in him.

"Subterranean Homesick Blues" I think
War Pigs
Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of deaths construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds, oh lord yeah!
Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor
Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait till their judgement day comes, yeah!
Now in darkness, world stops turning
As the war machine keeps burning
No more war pigs of the power
Hand of God has sturck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees, the war pigs crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan, laughing, spreads his wings
All right now!
Hehe...
.. my other favorite anti-war tune.
=)
Most people get all caught
Most people get all caught up in 1984 or Brave New World...
But in the end it's just Animal Farm isn't it?
Yup..
.. a bunch of pigs running the show with lies and fear-mongering.
affirmation: President Paul
affirmation: President Paul 2008
loved it in the 60s and still do.
sooo prophetic...
Daddy's in the
Daddy's in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
You're on the pavement
Thinking about the government...
"Look out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Don't wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Don't wanna be a bum
You better chew gum
The pump don't work
'Cause the vandals took the handles"
Whose song is that?
