There was a thread on here in awhile back in which a couple of people said yahoo censored email. I'm thinking of switching, anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
Just be your own email provider. Cost like 10 bucks a month for a virtual server, an email script is usually a free addon... and there you go. No privacy issues, because you run your own email service. Space issues? You provide the parameters. Email freedom.. ;)
Hotmail and Gmail have got to be among the best FREE email services out there. A lesser known name that ive heard rave reviews about is www.squirrelmail.org, but I think its not 100 percent web based...
I was one of the ones who posted that Yahoo is censoring (not just filtering to BULK but not *delivering at all nor notifying sender of delivery failure*).
I have two *paid* Yahoo accounts ($19.99/year) and 2-3 free ones. I also have one Gmail account that I frequently use and I've recently created two more. All of those are POP e-mail accounts.
Yahoo "did something" around February 2007 that seemed to terminate many of my subscriptions (didn't notice until later due to extensive filters I use).
Yahoo "did something" again in 2008 that seemed to require more specific "whitelisting" of subscription e-mail addresses.
A couple of weeks ago Yahoo had *extreme* delays in outbound mail from my desktop. At that time, I started using a free GMail address and sending everything to both e-mail addresses. No problem with GMail, but as much as 24 *hours* later with Yahoo.
More than a week later, Yahoo finally sent an e-mail to change my paid account inbound/outbound server addresses. Obviously, something major occurred that they didn't publicize - a Denial of Service (DOS) attack or something else?
Differences between normal GMail and Yahoo e-mail downloads - if GMail filters to spam, it does *not* come down to my computer, which requires me to remember to go to webmail to see what was erroneously filtered to bulk.
Yahoo does allow e-mails to be automatically downloaded from BULK.
NOTE: If the entire purpose of spam filters is to just block spam, I cannot use autodelete of spam AT ALL, because way too many legitimate e-mails are misidentified as spam.
For instance, if I have whitelisted the newsletter address, but the owner sends an e-mail with his/her own address, it may get filtered to spam. If any whitelisted subscription changes its sending e-mail address (or changes newsletter e-mail providers), those subscriptions may be filtered to spam.
AOL CAUTION: Many long-term activists will not accept AOL e-mail addresses AT ALL. AOL blocks (with error messages back to sender, at least - 100s to an activist aren't appreciated!) e-mail based on *content or links* within the e-mails, subscription or not. I consider that to be illegal.
Also, AOL is IMAP processing for e-mail. If I download those and filter them, it moves those to *delete*, which cannot be archived within AOL (unless they are restored/archived/deleted again). Any others that are downloaded get changed to *read*.
Also, AOL e-mail interaction fails fairly often (in downloading or uploading status changes due to reading or transferring).
I have also been dismayed to find that if AOL deletes the read or deleted e-mails on its periodic basis, if I *haven't* transferred them, AOL deletes them from *my hard drive*, as well. The whole point is to have backups!
A family member has had a paid GoDaddy e-mail account with the domain. It is another POP e-mail account. However, caution there, as well, because as I routinely check e-mail throughout the day, that account frequently indicates server not available.
Any other questions:)
Personally, I now have many subscriptions from Yahoo, Gmail, and AOL *just to note which company is filtering what content/URLs*. Free access on the Internet, huh?
Yes, I remember you were one who provided detailed information about yahoo before. In fact, you kindly responded to my post and gave me specifics which is why (finally:D) I decided to open something else. I appreciate the detailed information, thanks very much.
AOL sucks, anyone who has ever waited a minute for thier e-mail to show up on thier screen knows the fastest, most secure site is gmail.com
Hey, I got an idea look up who have contributed to Ron Pauls campaign on www.opensecrets.org. Notice how Microsoft employees (hotmail) and google employees(gmail) are number 4 and 5 top contributors? This only further strengthens the case that AOL is for chumps.
I get and receive almost 300 emails a day and they come and go instantly..I have never had a problem with them..I don't care who their employees contribute to I care about getting good email service and AOl is the best
I can give you great advice on this, as I am in IT (Information Technology), and I signed up with Yahoo mail years ago when they first started out before Google even existed. Yahoo used to be good, in fact probably the best free web based email service. Unfortunately, what happened to Yahoo as a company after they went public is similar to what happened to our government - it grew too fast in different and unadvisable ways. As I started to depend more heavily on my email it bothered me when people said they had sent something I didn't receive, but I assumed it was on their end. Then I started having problems attaching files, and downloading file attachments - even trying different browsers and operating systems to locate the problem. I had always heard Gmail was pretty good, and around this time they had started allowing anyone to join - it was previously invitation only. So I signed up and have been impressed ever since. In my opinion they now have the best free online email service, including less obtrusive ads than Yahoo. There are many features for the technically savy, and anybody that knows anything about it will agree that Google easily has better engineers, technology, and capacity than Yahoo.
The only warning is that Google does use their technology to scan the words in your emails to show you related text ads. However, Yahoo collects personal information as well. In general, everyone should be conscious that the web makes a lot more of our personal info accessible than ever before, so it's just something to keep in mind.
I recently set up a gmail account. You can set it up to use POP (Post Office Protocol) so that you can read your email with a normal user agent like Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office Express, Mac OS/X Mail, etc. It was easy to set up on the Mac as just another Inbox.
I knew I could count on this forum. A non-internet-savvy person like myself needs this help, lol. Again, thanks to everyone who responds, or has responded.
You can download an addon for gmail that encrypts your emails. Plus Gmail has about ten million features that I am slowly learning about and coming to love.
He belittles anyone's attempt to give solid advice or report actual news rather than old media censored views. As far as I know hotmail and gmail aren't censored. Yahoo did give up information to the Chinese Government so they could imprison chinese citizens. AOL is for chumps and losers.
I accompany that assumption with one that anyone reading my communications without authorization is doing so because they fear ME at some level. I get a little warm fuzzy, then say what I need to say. And occassionally I shake in my boots for a minute after I think about what I just said... Less and less these days, though. The "awakening" continues and I still believe that one of these fine sunny days, the "100th monkey" will get it. For now, I am ready to return to the pony express!
I guess what I'm concerned with is e-mails not being delivered -- I assume they are all read. I've heard some say that that has happened (non-delivery) with yahoo. I just thought someone may have an opinion on what is better. If it doesn't matter, I'll just leave it be. -- Thanks for your response.
I
I use AOL
Mozilla has a web browser called firefox
they also have a free email program called "Thundebird"
just google it.
Thanks to all!
I'm very grateful to all those who took the time to respond, and I'm sorry to those I didn't thank directly. All the best, everyone.
For anyone with any web skills whatsoever....
Just be your own email provider. Cost like 10 bucks a month for a virtual server, an email script is usually a free addon... and there you go. No privacy issues, because you run your own email service. Space issues? You provide the parameters. Email freedom.. ;)

Thanks, I'm cheap, but if gmail doesn't work I may eventually resort to that.:)

Appreciate the detailed response. I'm sure many features are beyond my capabilities, but it sounds pretty good.
I don't expect my emails are private, but I at least want them to be fully delivered.
