The idea that our politicians can prevent two consenting Americans from utilizing any commodity as a common medium of exchange is incorrect. What the legal tender laws say is that everyone must accept the dollar (even though today's dollar is in violation to what the Constitution states) as legal payment. It is no way prohibits those two American citizens from utilizing Canadian currency, Euros, or any form of money.
The government employees who stole the gold and silver Liberty Dollars tried to make the claim that people might confuse the Liberty Dollar with authorized fiat currency such as federal reserve notes. That seems to be their argument.
Americans have been using Canadian currency for transactions for years. Do we hear of anyone being arrested, or of Canadian currency being confiscated (stolen)?
The difference between barter and using currency is obvious. Currency is much more liquid. What more and more Americans are beginning to understand is the difference between fiat currency and real money. Real money has intrinsic value. Fiat currency is money because government says so.
The demise of the dollar is the result of greedy politicians creating more and more dollars through their agent, the Federal Reserve, and flooding the economy with these "dollars". These politicians tell us that we must accept payment for all debts, public and private, with these "dollars". If we try to save for retirement, the purchasing power of those dollars is eroded by the continual increase of new dollars inntroduced into the economy.
Is it any wonder that Americans are looking for honest money? Is it any wonder that dishonest politicians are trying to discourage them? After all, fiat currency produced by the Federal Reserve/ US Treasury tag team gives the politicians virtually unlimited "money". All they have to do to is to create more of it. It's all the rest of us who pay the price for this scam.
existing coinage - pre '65. I went to get a haircut the other day and it is $12 at the small town barber I use. When I was through, I asked him if he wanted the $12 in federal reserve notes or $1 in "real" money and offered him two "walking liberty" half dollars from the 40's. He took the half dollars.
I thought about this before, and from what I understand there was an underground network trading the Liberty Dollars, but there really are not enough of us have any benefit while being spread apart. Now if we got the 500,000 or so Paul supporters in the same town/county it would be a different story. We would not have access to everything manufactured that dollars have access to now, but would still have a decent range of professions and talents for a cowboy style society. However, I think strategically to take back our country it's better to remain spread out.
Barter, although the IRS expects you to track the value and pay taxes still...
or there is (paraphrased) Ayn Rand's observation: Free men do not ask "who will let me" they ask "who will stop me?"
IMHO: They powers that be don't want a competing currency, but I did find something intersting called Berkshares that people are using.
If nothing else, it's a good read on what one local community is doing.

but hypothetical credits
Fortune Favors the Bold
are fine, as long as there is no physical currency. We could set up a system like that.
Why not just use

The government
doesn't want a competing currency. But barter is still legal...right now.
Isn't this the same trouble that NORFED ran into with the Liberty Dollar?
two options

good one
I read the Fountain Head - a stunning book at an early age.
no
you can't just start a currency, but you can barter with everything from corn to sex
Don't know if "THEY" would allow it?
