What we are up against: profound ignorance

We already know of this phenomenon, of course...people selecting candidates based on how they speak or walk or dance (or parrr-tayyy!! *sigh*) or because it's who their parents talk about, or because of their skin color or gender...or whatever random item they "like" about a candidate, even if they cannot articulate it...

Logic and reason does not work with illogical, irrational people, so starting out by discussing issues with people who obviously don't care about issues is an exercise in futility.

What's the first rule in persuasive speech? Know Your Audience.

So the question is: what buttons need to be pressed to get the attention of these folks who don't think, yet talk about their "choices" with friends and family, and go to the polls and actually vote? We are NOT going to be able to instantly download cogent, critical thinking abilities into their brains, so we need to meet them where they are.

Yes, it's a scary thought, I know. Don't panic.

God bless RP, I love him to death, but he's not going to start hip-hopping or "breaking it down" anytime soon (not that I would want him to!!!) -- so we need to think of creative approaches to reach airhead audiences to get their attention in a language that they understand. THEN...we gently lead them into the light.

But there's the hurdle of that first step: hooking their short attention span just long enough to get them to see that there is something of value here for them to address. Yes, "something of value" for such people will likely be something shallow, flashy, and trendy. So be it. We need to find the appropriate bait to catch them...then, we concentrate on reeling them in.

This is a question I am asking in earnest. So, ideas? What out-of-the-box thinking can we apply to this problem? What is important to these people, and how can we capitalize on their interests?

I look at the throngs of determined young men and women who have joined Dr. Paul's campaign and it gives at least a measure of hope for the future. I am convinced that, if the founding fathers could have seen this in the future, the Constitution would have been written differently; that is to say, with stronger chains to bind the federal government.

It is a sad time we live in. I wish I was born in the time that our country was framed! For a moment there during this election I was very optimistic! I haven't lost hope completely but it's getting close!

It takes a minute or two to create an account on YouTube and just a click or two to rate videos. Just 2000 ratings would easily have this video on the front page of Top Rated videos for the week. Instead it's not even in the top 100 (not even on the list), forget top rated for the month.

Please rate videos. It takes piratically zero effort and collectively adds up to a whole lot more exposure for Dr P and these important issues.

In these cases they are 30 second sound bytes that make a terrific argument against democracy. Perhaps these ignorant, apathetic beach bums were filmed in Florida where they consider themselves lucky if their vote even gets counted.

Sadly, this is a pretty old trend at this point. Dave Leip's Presidential Election Atlas has voter turnout data going back to the 1960 election, which happens to be the "best" one (read: the election where the highest percentage of the voting-age population bothered to do so), at 63%. The worst was the shockingly abysmal 49% in '96. It's probably safe to extrapolate backwards and say that people were more enthusiastic and informed the further back you go.

So, about half the people who can vote, do. And here we see how well-informed the average "person on the beach" is, from among presumed voters (they probably wouldn't have responded if they didn't plan on voting).

In short: America is doomed. I wonder if the first sub-40% turnout will happen in my lifetime....

It's the attitude that gets me . . . the air-headed giggling, the baseless opinions, the "We don't have a clue, but who gives a damn? We're all having fun! Hee hee hee!" The title of the post says it precisely!

The most sobering aspect is that not many years ago, I was much the same!

As others have commented, this is a pretty damning indictment of the education system. And although I might be preaching to the converted, I thought I'd put here one of my favorite "smoking gun" quotes from one of the psychiatrists responsible for subverting education:

The whole article is very good.

It seems those people on the beach are the "international children of the future".

As for what to do about it, I still think most of them could be reached, if only on a friendly, one-on-one basis, starting with something like the "Money as Debt" video (The first half only, since it goes on to propose a stupid solution in the later part.)

There sure is some work to be done!

The cult of personality. We've seen this for years and it was as though it was unavoidable, so we chose not to notice. Now Ron Paul has opened our eyes and we know we can actually understand policy and we want the truth. But most people are still where we were before, the MSM talks down to everyone and makes them think they aren't capable of knowing what's going on - so people think they have to leave it to the "experts".

We need to wake people up and let them know that they have the power to change the direction of this country and the whole world.

...are killing our country. But it's nothing new. People were apathetic in the early part of the 20th century, too. What else could explain the 16th amendment, the FED, and the IRS?

The government should require you to take a test before being allowed to vote. You should have to know some basic stuff about the candidates. It might also be good to require some kind of small fee, maybe $50. This would keep the apathetic people who don't take the time to get involved from messing up the vote.

It is really offensive to me to know that all my time and effort to make an informed vote can simply be nullified by one of those clueless people.

It's scary...I visited my Mom last weekend and her friend that was there noticed the Ron Paul bumper sticker on my car. She said "Who is Ron Paul?" I said "That's the question of the year." Then my mom tried to convince me that he had dropped out of the race.

Today, the biggest threat to freedom, liberty, and the American way of life is the unintended collective collaboration of the ignorant (most particularly the fiery, overly zealous and unreflective ignorant).

...another deeper problem facing America...The ever-growing membership of the collective ignorant, aka "Brain-Off Conspiracy" (BOC).

We can conduct more elections to change the personalities involved in politics, think tanks, and corporate America, but America is suffering most not from poor leadership but from a poorly educated and passively involved citizenry.

We cannot blame leaders!

We are trained, taught, and educated-almost from birth it seems-to be good, stable members of the brain off crowd. ...had spent so many years as a member of this frightening organization.

Fortunately, for America, there exists another group that has a stake in this battle. This group carries the torch of freedom and liberty. They are the "Free Capitalists". They shoulder the burden and weight of the world. They wake up every day with a commitment to turn their brain on and fearlessly but strategically battle the enemy.

The r3VOLution must NEVER end! Simultaneously, we must work constantly to convert the BOC. The battle is waging; the lines are drawn. Is your brain on?

Let's turn on our brains, collectively, to lead us into the next battle. What can we do different to motivate and inspire voters. If we always follow principles, as Dr. Paul does, we will prevail. Some here must identify those principles and stay with them---Principles Rule!! Old media tell people that we are all "kooks", "conspiracy nuts" ...

We want a strategy to completely turn this around. We want to do some brainstorming. What works for you - what doesn't work, keeping in mind all the BOC's.

When we see inappropriate posts on You Tube, utilizing name calling, foul language, and insults - take a moment and email them privately with words of encouragement to support Dr. Paul. i.e. "What would Ron Paul do (or say)" and offer suggestions, not insults to those who do not understand what the r3VOLution is truly about!

Please start a forum to link all these ideas in one place.

Wow, this is scary stuff. Not really surprising though, most Americans are too apathetic to do research on political candidates. No wonder RP is not doing so well, because people are ignorant of his positions on the issues and ignorant of his opponents views on the issues.
