Selective Service
This is a constitutional issue, so please read and give any advise or knowledge. Thanks.
I live in Virginia, and here when you go to obtain a drivers license you have to sign up for Selective Service. I was interested in finding out how many other states that this is required in. Also, if the 13th amendment did away with involuntary servitude, then how can they force you to go to war if you don't want to. Lastly, didn't they do away with the draft in the 70's, so does anyone know why the SS is still in operation.
The reason this is such a concern for me is that I have a 17 year old who wants to get his license, and I have not allowed him to because of this. I feel so guilty, but I can not allow him to do this.
This hasn't stopped him from traveling, but I hate that it has to be done this way.

That's why we need people like Ron Paul:
This bill was introduced by Rangel:
H.R.393 : To require all persons in the United States between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform national service...
Sponsor: Rep Rangel, Charles B. [NY-15] (introduced 1/10/2007)
This bill was introduced by Ron Paul the VERY NEXT DAY:
H.R.424 : To repeal the Military Selective Service Act.
Sponsor: Rep Paul, Ron [TX-14] (introduced 1/11/2007)
At least someone is watching out for the next generation.
I refused to sign up
Fortune Favors the Bold
for years, but when i went to college, I had to. In hindsight, wishing I hadn't bothered, since the college was a waste of time and money.
They threaten you to register, but if you don't they won't prosecute. It is more of a pressure issue, restricting you from using most government processing services if you refuse.
In Virginia...
you can not refuse or they will not give you a drivers license.
come to think of it my best
come to think of it my best friend and i are both 33. he has never signed up.
this country hasn't declared
this country hasn't declared war since WWII. but just like the income tax they'll use the draft when ever "they" want to. i spent 3 years in the army recently and believe me your kid doesn't want anything to do with it.
you can roll the dice and get them a license and hope for the best. or they could do something like the air force reserves. i'm not positive, but it's possible they take people for only 3 years. as long as they don't sign up for security forces they should be fine. that job has been getting attached to army units and doing 15 month deployments.
make sure they take the ASVAB before they sign anything. this can help them get a signing bonus, better choice of jobs, etc. i'm sure military service for you child isn't your first option. especially since most Ron Paul supporters now realize there is no enemy worth fighting.
i think draft age is up to 25-26. or maybe they've changed it to even higher. you can't keep them from getting their license for another 9 years.
When he is
supporting himself he can do whatever he wants. I can not stop him then. But for now I am responsible for him and he will not get one. Like I said it hasn't stopped him from driving. I know a lot of people who are not allowing their children to get one for the same reasons, and it hasn't stopped them from driving either. It does however make it more difficult sometimes. If it's unconstitutional they can not force you to obtain a license.
The Supreme Court once
The Supreme Court once refused to rule on whether selective service was a violation of the 13th amendment. Supporters of a draft contend that the 13th Amendment is referring to indentured servitude. That, of course, is not what it says. It says "involuntary servitute" not "indentured servitude". Anyway, most intentured servants were in voluntary arrangements to pay off their passage. Modern military contracts are, in fact, agreement to give up some Constitutional freedoms for a time period in return for whatever the military offer.
President Carter revived the Selective Service System, stopped selling grain to the USSR, and boycotted the Moscow Olympics in 1980 to show resolve when he was hoping the USSR would get out of Afghanistan.
There were a number of arm bending pieces of legislation to force young males to register. Republican Rep. Gerald Solomon sponsored the Solomon Amendment in 1982 requiring registration to get federal college loans. This was followed by other Solomon Amendments and state legislatures that came up with similar behavior modification laws.
I wonder how the sex discrimination of this 1980 law would hold up in court today. Sex discrimination in a 2008 court would proably have more standing than the 13th Amendment. The only women subject to a draft are those in medical professions. ("The Doctor Draft")
Watch Representative Charlie Wrangel. He is the point person in Congress for moving the draft forward. He doesn't have the support now but things may change after the election or new military adventures.
Here in Texas they require
Here in Texas they require it too. As far as I know, its the law, Males have to do in on their 18th birthday. My son had a teacher that was "nice" enough show him how to do it online at school. Please be aware, that the recruiters come to the High schools, and are very good salesmen. They make the military sound very attractive. There was a thead somewhere about people getting together and buying an island somewhere...at first I thought it nuts, but now I'm finding myself thinking about it. The draft scares me to death, and both my kids ( 18 and 20) think Obama will save them.
please ground both of your
please ground both of your kids until they realize Obama is as worthless as Hillary and McCain. make them sit in a darkroom and watch Endgame by Alex Jones. then explain to them Obama is part of those groups. if that doesn't scare them into supporting Ron Paul i don't know what to tell you.
the truth is most recruiters know nothing of jobs in the military other than the one they originally did. at least m recruiter was honest and explained this to me. he also told me not to go combat arms, but i was a dumbass and didn't listen. luckily i survived a year in Baghdad. another thing army recruiters won't mention is the little clause in your contract that says "needs of the army." meaning that if you sign up to be a radiologist, but they need infantrymen. well you very well might end up being an infantryman. this is happening a lot lately.
This is why I home school....
it just seems like no matter what you do, they are going to find someway to get you. It just makes me sick and angry. This is what we fight for, our children and grandchildren. I NEVER want them to be able to look me and ask why didn't you do something, like I can ask my parents!
