Did you miss the last thread
Did you miss the last thread on this? First of all if you're going to have a gun you have to be willing to pull the trigger if necessary. Second, you should know a few things about how to not get shot with your own gun. I'm not talking about accidentally shooting yourself either, I'm talking about having you firearm taken from you and then used against you. The only reason i mention this is because if you knew how to overcome these challenges you'd know what you need.
But anyway... Many people including myself feel the 40.cal is the self-defense round available. But since you have left indications that you may be a firearm novice. I'd suggest something smaller and easier to learn on. The smaller caliber is also cheaper to practice with. No range i have ever been to has ever run out of 9mil. cartrages.
When you are ready, then move to a larger caliber. If you can try to get up to 45.cal. as it has the best stopping power. My favorite marker would have to be Heckler & Koch, but a Para Ordinance with it's high capacity 45.cal is serious contender.
As for shotguns... the first time i fired a 12 gauge shotgun i dug a small hole in the ground underneath the target. Again, if you are just learning there's nothing wrong with starting small and working your way up. Besides you can fire a 410 singlehanded. My bother-in-law has an old antique 410 that's been sawed off. Not as intimidating as the sound of a pump action 12 gauge, but fun none the less.

Do you need a gun?
Short answer is yes. Guns are "Liberty's teeth". As with most things get educated on the subject ,you can start here http://www.lewrockwell.co... . and lews sight has a whole section on gun rights in the archives (some good reading there). I myself am in the educational phase and do not own anything yet. Though the news about the Fed has me worried and I will be advancing my plans accordingly.
Should you own a gun? Beats
Should you own a gun? Beats the hell out of me. But each situation is different. if you do not live in a stable environment, then perhaps you should not own a gun.
You shouldn't own a gun:
- If you're irresponsible or forgetful.
- If you have a substance abuse problem
- If you're in the "partying stage of life", lot's of booze or drugs
- Have a history of mental instability.
- Live in a place shared by friends or family and cannot secure your firearm properly.
- Immaturity
- If you don't have a desire to provide proper care and feeding of your firearms.
- If you don't have a fundamental understanding of just defense of one's self or others.
When I was in college, I drank heavily every weekend, and had 4 roomates. Needless to say, a gun in that environment was ridiculous. We had golf clubs.
After I graduated, things changed. I lived on my own. I got bored of drinking, so I stopped. I moved to Dallas. I didn't live in the best neighborhoods because I wanted to save money. I became more responsible. I now own several guns, as well as a little gold & silver, I have a savings account, I don't have any debt. I don't drive a fancy car or have a lot of junk. I only mention the other stuff because I'm illustrating how my situation changed. You don't need to be debt free to own a gun.
I was raised by responsible people, ranging from my father to my grandfather, on how to use firearms.
So should you have a gun? Who knows. There are a lot of reasons to have one. And just as many not to have one.
It's a personal decision. Choose wisely.
d
Depends on the purpose.
A gun is good, but a knife works as does an ax, a rock or a big stick, depends on what kind of tool you need.
In a fight I would rather have bunch of small guys with knifes than a bunch of big guys with guns.
Yes, you need a gun but
Yes, you need a gun but remember that survival, or even life as a citizen, isn't just about being armed to the teeth. Look into long term food solutions, long term financial security and medical needs. I doubt I needed to say that last part but just in case I thought I would throw it in.
A few things to know. A pistol is for fighting your way to your riffle. A riffle is the most important gun you can have if things ever go bad. A shotgun is important for city/close range aggression/defense. Its also a good weapon if you can't aim.
Buy your guns private party for cash at gun shows. Do whatever you can to not have to register them. If the government ever goes bad, expect that the first lists they will run through are lists of people registered and armed to the hilt. When you think of storage if things go bad, remember that guns can be found with metal detectors so think of a way to conceal them appropriately. Normal storage can be done in a large safe or something similar but I wouldn't get anything that screams "there were guns in here". Buy a cheap old gun and register it so you have something to give up during confiscations.
When looking for a caliber, try to pick riffles based on standard NATO rounds and handguns based the rounds most commonly used by your local police force. The NATO standards can be found online easily. To find the local standards, drop by the local "cop shop" or other ammunition sales places and ask questions. Remember that gun parts break so if you are buying multiple guns of the same type (pistol, riffle, shotgun), try to get the same make and models so parts can be cannibalized. Buy extra parts for things that normally break. If you store a large number of common police rounds, you could very well end up being friends with the local cops if things get bad. Proper ammunition canisters will greatly prolong the shelf life of your ammunition.
Shop around and talk to people you trust about these things. There are a number of undercover feds at gun shows so be careful.
Having an armory is nice but invading armies always end up supplying the weapons for the resistance one way or another in time. Having enough firepower to get to that point is more important than being able to stock a whole unit. I highly recommend "The War of the Flea" on this topic. Its written by the only American high up in Castro's revolution and is about armed resistance. I wholly disagree with the guy's politics but the logistics he talks about are from experience and look to be timeless.
Good thinking
on having a registered set and the real set.. we did this a few years ago. As far as hiding your guns, I've seen gun sumps coming back in style. It's basically a 10 foot hole with a pvc lining that is hidden under a tile or bit of flooring. You tie your weapon of choice onto one end of a string and lower it down... we've a setup like that in our bathroom. You lift up a tile beside the commode to access a parker 12 gauge.. ;)
It's far down enough in the ground to not set off any metal detectors that I've tried.

Defending your life
If you are willing to practice and train until you are competent
get a semi-auto handgun in either 9mm. .40, or .45 caliber. Get a laser sight like the ones made by Crimson trace to fit it. A laser sight is a proven deterrent itself and will allow accurate shooting from most positions under low light conditions as well as in the daylight.
A semiautomatic handgun is also extremely "safe" around young children if it is kept with a loaded clip but empty chamber. The reason is children under about the age of eight to 10 do not have the strength necessary to chamber a round.
If you are not willing to practice as much a quality pump shotgun loaded with #4 buck is a good choice also and will be about half or even 1/3 the cost of a quality semi-auto with a laser grip sight.
I have both.
Mossberg 500 persuader 12g vs 20g
Would a 20 gauge be just as effective as a 12g?
What ammo/shot would you recommend for home defense?

If you have neighbors close by then
I'd avoid slugs... 20g should be fine -- less recoil could allow you to get off more shots and stay under control. Someone put up a link to The Judge by Taurus. It's a .357 that also fires .410 shotgun shells for enemies nearby. If you have kids in the house then I'd buy some trigger locks. Practice, practice, practice until it feels like an extension of your own hand.

for the simple fact that if the SHTF, you'll be able to use the shells for barter as well.. ;)
And check out the damage done to a human body by buckshot, as opposed to a slug.
No,
you need at least two. If you have never fired a weapon before, instead of a rifle, consider getting a pump action shotgun. A shotgun is a great defensive weapon suitable for your home. Mossberg makes a relatively cheap pump action 12 gauge.
On the question of a handgun, it's going to boil down to your personal preferences. Do you want the stopping power of a .357 or .41 revolver, or would you rather have a higher capacity pistol with less stopping power like a 9mm? Personally, for handguns I prefer the .45 in a modified 1911 configuration. It does not have the capacity of the 9 mm, but it has a great deal more stopping power at close range.
The best thing to do before you buy a weapon is learn how to shoot. There should be instruction, and different firearms available at either your local shooting range or gun club. If neither of these are available, your best bet is to ask a combat veteran to teach you how to shoot.
it is better to have a gun
it is better to have a gun and not need it
than to need a gun and not have one
my friend has a ar 15 with a lazer scope
now that is some serious firepower
getting a shotgun
i dont have a gun safe though. would a locked closet be practicle.?
if money is no object.... 1)
if money is no object....
1) ar15... at least 20 magazines..2000 rounds ammo
2) glock22 .40 s&w 1000 rounds ammo
3) remington 870 pump action 12 gauge shotgun buckshot for defense..
slugs for hunting deer etc. bird shot #6 for ducks and fowl
4) REMINGTON700BDL 300 winchester magnum.. 1000 rounds
large game... long range sniper weapon....
this is what I would have at a minimum...
as for me and my home, we shall worship the LORD
SIERRAHPBT I disagree with your choice on the AR-15
they have to be babied too much and they are way overpriced.A friend of mine bought one many years ago and I went with him to test fire/sight it in. After firing 5 rounds I handed it back to him and told him he should have bought what I originally suggested for half the price. Ruger Mini-14 .223cal. Which is what he has now. The can be purchased in stainless steel and make sure to get the Ranch Rifle (it's grooved for scope acceptability). Very accurate and a very dependable action that never jams. If you need more power the same can be had in 7.62 Ruger Mini-30
As far as handguns go I prefer semi-autos myself, any of the Colt .45s,but remember to have a very good ramp&throat job done on it to prevent jamming.
As far as Stainless Steel reflection, there are really good paints made for guns to camouflage them.
The main reason I do not care for the ARs is that they twist to one side when recoiling and they are very sensitive to jamming. The minis have a proven action dating back to WW2 with the M-1s which is what they were
patterned after.Nice straight back recoil not really important but I found the AR irritating because of it.
the very first rifle i
the very first rifle i bought was a mini 14... i liked it but they are as innacurate as anything ive ever seen. they need extensive gunsmithing to get them to shoot 1 moa. My ar15 never needs babied.. I'v fired as many as 1500 rounds in a day and never had a problem.. they are very very accurate.. to each his own... if I could only have one rifle and no others I would take a springfield M1A! .308 is the BEST all around cartridge around,,,
as for me and my home, we shall worship the LORD
shotguns are very good they scatter
They can remove three assailants with one shot if you saw the barrel back. I have three of them. hand guns don't always kill unless you aim high and if you intend to shoot someone you need to be serious about it or the missed opportunity will leave you dead. Oh by the way I live in a bad neighbourhood so I know alot about these things. I lived in detroit for years. spreDers are good with a 2.3/4 dram.
Shotgun and a small pistol.
Get the proper training and buy a safe for the weapons. Learn to disassemble and clean the weapons.
Clarification...
but just for the long-term minded. Pistol and rifle of the 22 long flavor... I can't tell you how many deer I've killed with a 22 long round from a chickenstick rifle. (Think food). Interchangable ammo with the pistol. 22 rounds can be used for barter. A small caliber pistol is ideal for close-range urban defence (or offence) as well.
Shotgun for inhome defence, buckshot. And exactly what the lower poster said... shorter barrel the better, get a modified stock. Get used to the weapon and it is an indoors people eraser.
Defensive weapons
Home defense is what most of us think about when we think about guns. This being the case, please indulge me as I make a rather rude but reasonabley accurate opinion. Most people who think they should own guns are foolong only themselves.
Before jumping sown my throat, please let me elaborate. I am retired military and am well versed in the use of small arms, having scored expert on every rifle and pistol range I was fortunate enough to shoot on AFTER I found that I needed corrective lenses. 22 expert qualifications total in both rifle and pistol. More than most, less than some.
I am also well acquainted with a lot of people who are unable to load, much less unsafe or even shoot a firearm, even if they could identify a threat, yet they own several guns anyway. One good friend who should know better has a revolver that she took the firing pin out of because she did not want to hurt anyone, just scare them.
My advice to anyone who thinks they should buy a gun can be summed up in several short statements: 1) Are you prepared to kill an intruder? If not, you should not own a gun. 2) Are you prepared to kill an attacker while witnessing an assault? If not, you should not own a gun. 3) Are you prepared to go to trial for killing in situations 1 or 2? If not, you should not own a gun. 4) Are you prepared to make a mistake and kill an innocent person, even by accident? If not, you should not own a gun. 5) Are you prepared to train in the use of your gun and shell out the money and time it takes to have REAL experts in home defense train you and are you prepared to do ongoing training so long as you own a gun? If not, you should not own a gun.
Now that over 97% of adult Americans are taken care of, lets look at reasons to own a gun. 1) You see that predators (I don't mean lions, tigers of bears) are more numerous than ever before and that the thin blue line is thinner than ever before and you want to be more responsible for your own safety. 2) You are willing to train, train, train. 3) You are willing to accept the legal and moral consequences of your actions in the use of your gun, even should make a mistake and hit an innocent. 4) You are willing to train, train, train. (Yes, I said this again. It's important)
My opinion of the best home defense firearm is the shortest barrel shotgun you can legally own. Rifles are unwieldy in close quarters and handguns are extremely inaccurate in the hands of nervous people. The shotgun normally requires two hands, making it natrually more steady in the hands of almost anyone.
Lastly, know your target and know what is around and behind your target.
Damn!
I found misspellings in my above comment! Sorry.
Being a woman, and never been violent
nor agressive, I never thought I could shoot anyone, but since having 6 children, and a bunch of grandchildren, and chickens, etc, I realize that yes, if my children , grandchildren were in danger, I could use a gun to protect them. (that old mother bear thing). And although I havn't killed anyone or anything yet, I have tried killing hawks who were after my chickens. And yes, I do know how to clean, and load and fire my weapons, and am a good shot, too.
Good post.
Think ahead on the concequences.. coming from another vet with combat experience.
That being said, the OP asks if they want a gun.
Survival of the fittest situation coming up, economic meltdown... do you want to survive?
Vs
Oop. we were all wrong and all walk into the sunset with silly grins... did it hurt to be prepared?
Your call... I know where I am already.. I've got insurance.
Think of it as a fire extinguisher.. learn to use it.. hope you don't have to.

Gunowners and Victims
According to L. Neil Smith there are only two types of people (as he indulges his temptation to over-simplify things): Gun owners and victims.
I'm not much of a gun enthusiast myself (being averse to loud noises), but am nevertheless armed. Because I'm not interested in the hours of drill required for proficient marksmanship, I purchased a pump action shot gun. Point it more or less in the right direction, let off a few rounds, and any intruder who hasn't fled is on the ground in exquisite anguish.
With any luck I will never fire the thing in anger or fear. I have used it at a local range just to assure myself that it is in good working order. Because the sound of the pump action is so distinctive, would be free-lance socialists intent on redistributing my property would scurry upon hearing the ominous CLICK-CLICK as I moved a shell into the firing chamber.
If you have children in the house take them to the range with you, show them how it works, and give them a close up view of any of your practice targets after you've blasted the bejesus out of it.

12 guage pump shotgun is alway a good wepon for self defense.
Slugs for close range maximum knock down. Or Buc Shot preferably a 7 Shot if you are a poor aim. Anything less isn't very lethal.
I also advise you take a hunter and weapons saftey course.
Other than that you can decide which weapon will best suit your need.
OH become a NRA memeber also they have many listing and info to help you along in this process.

Yes
you need a gun. The best first line of defense is a 12 ga shotgun. Easy to shoot and hard to miss at close range. Use 00 buckshot shells. Make isn't really important- just shop for best price.

Believe me, I am not government. I couldn't serve with the kind of scum that walk the halls of our government now and feel good about it..
I would only serve a Constitutional Republic form of government as a volunteer (without pay) position only. Not unlike our forefathers.
