Three questions on silver purchases....

I just purchased some silver eagles today.....this will be my second time to order silver, and I've yet to receive my first order. Questions for anyone able to help:
(1) How long should an order take....worries me a little. Wrote a check -
(2) Apmex is down for new customers at least for another week or so they say..so I'm trying some other sites that were mentioned on dailypaul...any suggestions on the best place to buy SILVER EAGLES?
(3) The fact that they've put a hold on printing 2008 silver eagles...is that fed control due to fear, or really a "shortage" issue?
THANKS for any and every input! Everyone is so helpful on this site!

a little help

There are many things you can buy besides silver eagles. There are silver rounds (1oz) (not numismatic and sorta plain but cheaper than eagles), there are 1oz bars, 10oz bars, the junk silver pre-1964 spoken alot about around here and 100oz bars. Silver Eagles demand a premium because they're really nice but the others are the same silver content and a bit less expensive. Except the old coins have less silver content.

i read this guy Don's Column every monday, wed, and fri. It is a great read. Anyway he seems honest and it is just him and his son dealing at
www.coloradogold.com. Check him out or just read his column.

I've done business

with both Bullion Direct and Southern Coins and Precious Metals and Bullion Direct is usually a little cheaper, though both fill the orders fairly rapidly. The main difference between the two is SCPM buys back coins without having an account. They post their buy/sell prices on their web site (http://www.scpm.com). I have noticed that their buy price over spot has increased. Used to be they run spot plus $0.70 on silver eagles for the buy price, now they are showing spot plus $1.20. This tells me that they are not getting people to sell back to them as much as they used to get. This is also closer to true market value than the "paper" spot price. If I were going to sell right now, though, I would go through Ebay where you can get a much better price. As far as silver goes, I have a good bit of silver eagles AND 90% silver coins of different denominations and collector value.

If you ordered from APMEX

If you ordered from APMEX you have no need to worry. Your order will show up. I have ordered from them numerous times, and so have many people I know.

thanks...

I think i'm going there next..,.

APMEX up and running

Ruling by prayer
The apmex.com site is up and running.

thanks....

You're right....they told me just today it would be one week

Northwest Territorial Mint

NWT Mint is the best/cheapest place I've found on the net. It took about 3-4 weeks for them to fill the order and it was nerve wracking but it did finally come in.

Prices include shipping. Website is: http://www.nwtmintbullion...

They also have very fair repurchase prices. The local dealers are also fair, at least in my area. Best of luck. You may get nervous for the next couple of weeks as prices correct but it will come up as inflationary pressures take over. I'm looking for silver to slip to about 15.5/oz.

Take care!

I drove to Northwest Territorial mint

in Auburn a couple of weeks ago and bought some silver.
They don't have a big staff out front,I think they do mostly mail order, but on the day I went, there
were people lined up to by silver
and the clerks said they were not used to so many walk-ins.

That's the one I used....

Yes, they were the ones I used for my last order and very friendly....about $2.50 or so over the spot price....but the spot was 17.22 - and I was looking at it the same time...seemed to be slightly lower. When I called another place, he quoted me a higher spot (about 10 cents) ,and I told him what I saw...he said he was using the London price? Is that what they do?

Silver spot

prices change so quickly that it wouldn't surprise me that there would be a 0.10 difference depending on who refreshed browsers last. Metals trade around the clock and whoever's spot they are sighting shouldn't make a difference. I usually watch the Kitco charts but I have also watched USAgold's live ticker simultaniously and they always match if you refresh Kitco fast enough.

Play the market? Watch GG when gold starts to turn up again. It tracks with the gold spot and the US $ index nicely.

Take care.

GG?

Thanks but what is GG?

Do we need to really worry about people coming after our metals?

thanks for the tips, and in response to crazycarman's question below, and in general....but I haven't gotten anything yet to store! However, I'm NOT putting it in my bank....but do you think we reallyneed to worry about confiscation?

The thing that I fear

is if "they" kill the $ and go to a differnet currency and make it illegal to exchange metals for it.
Other than that, looking at history, those who own physical gold have reason to worry but those of us with silver should be okay. There is simply too much silver around for "them" to keep up with it.

Actually, I've read many

Actually, I've read many articles stating that silver is more scarce than gold...

They confiscated...

.. during the Great Depression..

The difference between a mugger and the government:

The government probably uses just the *threat* of force more frequently than the mugger does, though both can and will resort to violence to take your money.

Don't worry!!

You'll get your stuff.... it is nerve racking because you're out the $$$ and every day seems like an eternity.... you'll get it... but in the meanwhile.... GET MORE!!!!

This is probably the last buying opportunity before the mania phase...

Where are you storing it?? Hopefully not the bank!!

"Whether you think you can or think you cannot, you're absolutely right!"

Definitely compare prices.

I've bought over 400 "junk silver" dimes in the past four weeks from a coin shop at an average of just over $1.23 per dime. At that rate 500 dimes would have cost me $617.28.

Today a google search led me to a Web site (Lynn Coins) offering 500 "junk silver" dimes for $825.00 plus postage and insurance. That's a hefty markup!

Why dimes? My purpose is two-fold. First, the 90% silver coins could escalate in value rapidly depending on world events. Second, I can use the coins for small purchases in event of a thorough economic meltdown (depression), especially in the event of hyperinflation.

I initially thought the same

I initially thought the same McClarin, about 90% coins when I first started buying silver. Since then, I have re-thought my strategy a bit.

I have been buying a variety of 90% and silver eagles. The reason being that I have spoken to a few relatives and the ones not born before the 60's did not know dimes, quarters, and half dollars had silver in them. So when I do need to use silver for trade, it's a crap shoot if the person I am trading with will know the quarter I am handing them is worth more than $0.25.

For the same reason, I will only buy coins other than the 90% ones that state the amount of silver in them as well... to give the coin some validity in value. Such as the eagles stating "1 oz, fine silver".

Keep in mind that you may very well be trading these with people other than collectors and coin dealers.

Good point.

I guess I'm expecting a mixture of barter and silver/gold currency to supplant the dollar. The merchants, even the young ones and the flea market vendors, will make it their business to know what's 90% and what's pure. When they do, a few shopping forays should be all it takes before everyone's on board. It will be a fad that catches on fast. Of course there will be nowhere near enough gold and silver in circulation to serve as an exchange medium for all transactions but to the extent it can be used it will greatly facilitate trade. (Otherwise you have to lug your bushel of apples around looking for someone who has the tool you need who also wants some apples.)

Thanks for all the input! ....I went to my local coin shop today

and they want $24.95 for a silver eagle.... and although I'm new at this...it seemed all their prices were really high compared to the cheat sheet I brought with me. There is one shop in town that acts like a broker and as long as I have a quote from another dealer, they will match it or beat it.
Why the silver eagles? I just know they are popular and harder to get right now....thought they'd be useful for future purchasing/bartering if necessary. I also got 90% silver coming -. Not sure how much I should continue as the economy is unpredictable right now - and because I don't have a surplus of wealth, I may be in a fix if I need dollars and only have silver. Right now, my college wants dollars, not silver!

$25 is steep

I buy my silver eagles for $1 over spot. Gold eagles 1% over spot. You need to shop around.

ussatoday.blogspot.com

thanks

I've called around...no luck so far, except one man will match whatever price I find.....so that should be good. I can pick it up locally without shipping charges.

You are comparing paper silver with physical silver.

The price drop has occurred in the paper market -- not in the real world. The real world knows what's going on and you must pay the "market" price.

The paper price also doesn't take into consideration fabrication costs and dealer premiums.

Silver questions

Orders take varied amounts of time to receive depending on the vendor. The Eagles are in demand right now so likely you are in for a long wait.

I would question the APMEX "closure" and not send them (more) $$$ without a guarantee of some sort. What is you reason for wanting the Silver Eagles? They are nice coins but carry considerably more coinage load than other bullion. You will get more net ounces for your investment dollar by buying other generic bars and rounds that the coinage is only a few cents versus 'dollars'. "Junk" silver is a pretty good buy but typically 90% silver instead of .999. It comes in full bags of 715 ounces or 1/2, 1/4 or 1/10 bags with lesser quantities respectively. Also, you can pick up 773 oz. bags of 'junk' silver dollars but they tend to carry higher coinage. For sources of many products there are many. Also try coin shows and even gun shows usually have some coin dealers represented where I live, plus you can never have too many guns!

The Mint has been running low on silver for several years now. They are "out of stock" on many silver items and the shortage will only get worse according to most authorities. Silver has many commercial uses as well as intrinsic value for coins and jewelry and is being depleted more rapidly than it is replaced. Buy now and hold on to it for awhile!

Thanks...

I actually didn't buy anything from ampex...they wouldn't take my order because I'm new. I purchased from two other companies. I think I may try the junk silver coins...wish I had lots to "play" with...need to be careful how much I put into silver since it may take a long time for the dollar to get so low that silver is actually regularly used.

I suggest you find a

local dealer for your coins. First, you can actually get to know someone you are dealing with. Second, if you pay in cash there is no record. Third, you get it in hand instead of waiting. You may pay a little more since the dealer has to make his mark-up, but the security is worth it for me. For instance my guy only charges $1 over spot for silver. Since he gave me two 2 gold chinese pandas 1/2 ounce for the same price of a whole ounce I am happy to pay $1 over spot for the relationship and getting better deals. In addition, if you need to cash in the silver who are you goting to go to? I know my guy will buy from me before he buys from a stranger.

Where to buy

I would buy from a local shop. Develop a relationship and support your local community.

You don't have to wait or wonder. You get the stuff immediately. Just my 2 cents.

I've used Swiss America and the results

Freedom is not FREE!!

I've purchased a gold liberty, 4 morgan silvers and 10 peace dollars. I was pleased with the results although I wsa persuaded to buy numismatic I think I will purchase $20 gold eagles in the future. Also more peace dollars. I will try other companies but was overall pleased with Swiss America.

It took about 2-1/2 weeks for the complete transaction. I sent a cashiers check but nothing will be shipped until checks clear. That is just the price of being safe. Do not purchase anything twice without recieving the first order. Don't be in too much of a rush depending on where you are in the country.

Keep an eye on everything going on and then decide being as careful as you can. Trust in yourself and whatever higher power you believe in and do nothing without being informed.

How much does Swiss America

charge over the spot for silver eagles generally? Or are there prices pretty reasonable? I thought that bulliondirect.com was pretty good as well.

three questions...

it's slow for everyone now ordering silver.

why did you order more if you haven't received your first order? i can guess that you wanted to get it low being afraid it will go high again. that said, it would have been best to wait. same people?
always go with someone you can trust.

it's a us mint issue and a shortage and a alot of orders now issue.

I went to companies that were recommended through this site...

Yes, I ordered from one company - my check just cleared, called them and the order is on its way. I ordered the silver eagles from another company because the price is down right now, and suspect it will go up. Will probably not buy anything else right now -
If I had thousands to spare, I'd stock up and move to gold!
