Governor: South Carolina will not file extension for Real ID
COLUMBIA -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford says he will not ask the federal government for more time to comply with new driver license standards. The decision means South Carolinians may not be allowed to board airplanes or enter some federal facilities using only their state-issued driver's licenses.
They'd have to use a passport or go through more rigorous screening.
Sanford's decision came on the deadline to ask for more time to comply with the law. The state Legislature last year passed a measure that bars South Carolina from complying. Sanford and other governors have complained the Real ID measure costs too much.
The Real ID law calls for more secure identification cards in the wake of the 2001 terror attacks. Sanford says South Carolina already meets all but a couple of the standards.

what info will be on that little chip?
Can someone tell me what is exactly will be stored on the Real ID chip? what information...Social Security Number, credit history???!!!!
Even the passports now have chips....even my Irish passport will have one as well. And someone mentioned that after next year, all credit cards will have them. What is going on here? And why is all this coming out around the election time, as well as this unstable economy crisis?

Defiant South Carolina Wins Real ID Extension
By Ryan Singel EmailMarch 31, 2008 | 5:36:57 PMCategories: Identification
Despite blasting a defiant last day letter to the Homeland Security Department over pending federal rules Monday, South Carolina Republican governor Mark Sandford secured South Carolinians the right to use their driver's licenses to board planes without being patted down, at least until 2010.
I would love to read
I would love to read Sanford's Letter to DHS. I hope it is published.
Why Even Speak to The Federal Government?
Recognizing their authority by grant of extension is Beta behavior.

bump
you are correct. why even acknowledge there authority. They dont have it
Proud to be
a South Carolinian. Go Mark we are behind you!!!!!
I wish
the States would just flat out reject the REALID whether the cost is ninety-nine cents or $300.00
The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny. James Madison
Airplanes and Fed buildings
This is a no brainer. It takes 6 weeks to get a passport, and if you want to fly, go get one. If a federal building needs one, get one. The fees are paid by the person, and the federal government must do the work.
Then when you are not flying, or not going to a federal building, leave it home.
Problem solved.
Of course, we all know the REAL ID has nothing to do with airplanes, or buildings.
If it means I can't enter a Federal Prison - I'm all for it
I don't mind using a passport to enter the country; that's what passports are for.
But I will not use my driver licence for any federal government purpose. It's for driving a motor vehicle.

Passports contain RFID trackable chips
So if you HAVE to have one you can purchase a wallet to keep your information secure.

Personally it will be a cold day in hell before I will get a chipped ID.
Someone said
if you put them in your microwave it destroys the chip. Someone else said to hit it with a hammer.
Anyone know this for sure?
Thanks, candace.
I just went there and bought one.
chalk one up
for the home team.

"I killed the banks"
I like Sanford
Although, I would have liked him more if he actively supported Ron Paul during the heart of the race.

If I was a politician
I probably would not have expressed public support for Paul. This is because I would be afraid of hurting my career by association, because for a lot of people, when they think of Paul they tend to think of 9/11 truthers and his ownership of the company that published racist articles. It doesn't seem smart for a politican that even believes with most or all of Paul's positions, to put their future career plans at this kind of risk.
I suspect this reflects many politicians' thoughts.
WOAH WOAH WOAH!!!!
I have been taking in the view today here on DP. Trapp you are a troll and you wont hear that out of my mouth hardly ever.
And thank god you're not a Politician.
We can all say what needs to be done, but who here lead by example today?
This is exactly why none of
This is exactly why none of our other elected officials in Congress have an ounce of the integrity that Ron Paul has. If it is true that Mark Sanford did not endorse Ron Paul because of what other people think, (especially other members of Congress for pete's sake,) than I don't believe in all the hype I have heard about him. Being afraid to stand up for your principles certainly doesn't put you in Ron Paul's league. Nope! Not Presidential material.
Your principles aren't
going to accomplish much if you can't get elected. You've got to be smart. It may be better to disassociate himself from Paul in order for Sandford to eventually become the President, even if he believes in all of Paul's positions.
Paul has left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths, not due to him exactly, but due to many of his supporters. It might be best to stay clean of that, to further the goal of liberty.
Just rationalizing.
To me you have just stated what the problem is with our elected officials. We are not expecting the best from them. We elect them to be honest, principled and work for the good of our nation. Instead, our politicians go into public service to get rich. And we look the other way or rationalize their reasons for being less the honest. Why is that acceptable? If we hold them to their oath of office right from the start, and vote them out when they fail us, than maybe we would have a Congress that listened to the voters and a country that is not in or near bankruptcy.
All I can say is that while
All I can say is that while Mark Sanford was in the House, he worked closely with Dr. Paul on the Liberty Committee. What his motives are or are not, I cannot speak for the man, but he has taken stands here in this State that definitely are much closer to those of Dr. Paul than others. All in all, he has been a much better governor then the last several we have had. I think he is as restricted as any lone warrior, whether they be in Congress or serving as Governor.
Solid
I wish he was my governor.

I agree, it would have been
I agree, it would have been nice for him to have thrown his support behind his fellow Liberty Committee Member. Nevertheless, Sanford could become a valuable ally in the numerous battles we will face in the future.
Please, even if you live in other States, make your support for Mark Sanford known, make your position of Liberty and the Restoration of the Republic known to him. Write him and the Legislature of South Carolina with words of encouragement to continue to press for the Rights of the States and the limitation on federal authority.
BRAVO...I applaud my
BRAVO...I applaud my Governor and the State Legislature for once again Standing in Defiance of the federal autocrats.
Now, this federal usurpation of authority seeks to make two classifications of citizenship, one who can freely travel and associate, the other who will potentially be deprived of their Rights as Citizens of the Republic of South Carolina. So Be It!
