I am a Georgia district and state delegate. What next?

Ok, I did as people told me and now I am a delegate to my congressional district convention and the state convention in Georgia.

Does anyone have a crash course in convention rules/protocol and what I need to do next?

Am I bound to vote for McCain or whomever, or can I ambush for Paul?
Anyone got any resolutions that I should propose?

Where are Ron Paul people organizing for these conventions and should I make it known that I am a Ron Paul supporter? (I did not mention it in the precinct convention)

Thanks,
adelegate

State Coordinator here...

You can send me an email at ike@ronpaul2008.com and I can set you in the right direction. :-)

Ike Hall
Georgia State Coordinator
Ron Paul 2008

Ron Paul website has contact info!

I am a delegate in Missouri! We got organized here first through Meetups, but now after the caucuses, we are organizing the delegates through Ron Paul campaign. Go to www.RonPaul2008.com and click on "States" to find out who the State coordinator is, and grassroots organizer. They can put you in touch with County level coordinators.

http://www.ronpaul2008.co...

You can get information on the Convention agenda and rules from the GOP, or from your local Ron Paul Campaign staff. Get organized, so you can hold a practice convention, plan a strategy, know who the Ron Paul supporters are, etc.

PS I don't know how it works in GA, but here in MO, the State Convention May 31 can decide whether our delegates will be bound or unbound.

Very interesting.

I went to the our state's page and, guess what, Iowa does not have a "state coordinator".

I guess we are so prepared we don't need one.
The only problem is, our district convention is next week, and I know of at least six delegates (including my wife and I) who won't have a clue who to vote for other than one another unless the other RP delegates let us in on the secret.

I believe it is Georgia

I believe it is Georgia state law that binds you to the candidate that won your particular congressional district. McCain did not win but 2 or 3 districts in Georgia, so most people will have to vote for Huckabee or Romney on the first ballot.

Oh, and about resolutions...

I wanted the RP Campaign to supply some for us but I managed to work some up from the issues section of their website and stole some from the Iowa GOP platform:

We believe that basing tax on “estimated income” is unfair and that we should eliminate all income or payroll tax on income earned through tips to service-sector employees (as described in H.R. 3664).

We support a requirement that the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System continue to make available to the public on a weekly basis, information on the measure of the M3 monetary aggregate and its components.

We support a requirement that the Federal Open Market Committee Meetings be televised. (An institution as powerful as the Federal Reserve deserves full public scrutiny.)

We support the repeal ofprovisions of the federal criminal code relating to issuing coins of gold, silver, or other metal for use as current money and making or possessing likenesses of such coins.

We support the elimination of taxes on dividends and savings (Pass HJ Res. 23 to encourage savings over consumption).

We support the elimination of the “Death Tax” and would make the Bush tax cuts permanent (H.R. 2734).

We support amending the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to repeal the inclusion in gross income of Social Security benefits (Pass H.R. 191).

We support proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States relative to abolishing personal income, estate, and gift taxes and prohibiting the United States Government from engaging in business in competition with its citizens (Pass H.J. Res 23; The “Liberty Amendment”).

We support ending the unnecessary subsidy to our trading partners in Europe, Japan, and South Korea by reducing our military commitments and phasing out overseas military bases.

We support helping companies grow and create jobs by amending the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to reduce corporate marginal income tax rates (Pass H.R. 4995).

We support amending the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to exclude from the gross income of individual taxpayers discharges of indebtedness attributable to certain forgiven residential mortgage obligations. (Working families who lost their homes should not be punished a second time with a big IRS bill.)

We support a freeze of non-defense, non-entitlement spending at current levels.

We believe that the misguided regulations of Sarbane/Oxley have seriously wounded our capital markets, helped to make the United Kingdom a financial center at our expense, placed a burden on small business, and, therefore, we support its repeal.

We support enhancing the ability of community banks to foster economic growth and serve their communities by repealing unnecessary federal regulations (H.R. 1869).

(The following were borrowed mostly verbatim from the current Iowa GOP platform)

We support the abolition of the Federal Department of Education, and the removal of this position from the Cabinet. We believe that the control of education should be left to the parents, teachers, and local school boards.

We support returning government functions from the federal level to the state and local governments wherever possible, consistent with the intent of the Constitution.

We are opposed in principle to Universal and/or Nationalized Health Care, believing that common sense and the market place can do what government cannot: bring customers, health care providers and health care professionals together in a mutually beneficial union.

We oppose welfare, medical, and educational support and issuance of drivers licenses for illegal aliens and their dependents.

We oppose all forms of amnesty for illegal aliens in this country. We call for the government to devote increased resources to seal the borders against illegal goods and people entering the U.S.

We call for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would prevent the automatic granting of (“anchor baby”) citizenship to children born in the United States whose parents are illegally in this country.

We support withholding of dues to the United Nations as a means of insuring fiscal integrity.

We oppose any further financial obligations being placed upon the United States by the United Nations.

American participation in the United Nations, or any other international body, must never sacrifice the constitutional sovereignty of the United States.

We support the Second Amendment; recognizing a responsible, competent citizen’s right to self-defense through gun ownership.

We oppose reinstating the draft.

We support a balanced budget achieved by responsible spending rather than tax increases that place an undue burden on families.

We support the repeal of the 16th amendment, the elimination of the IRS and replacing all federal income taxes with a national consumption tax.

Hey, what district are you

Hey, what district are you in? I too am a district and state delegate here in Georgia. I'm in district 6. Did you join the GA Ron Paul delegate meetup group? The district coordinators have planned some delegate training meetings this Saturday.

District

I do not know what district it is (either 2 or 3), but the convention is in Bainbridge GA. Seems like the middle of nowhere to me, but if thats where I have to go so be it.

Thank ya'll for all the info, it will take me a while to go through it all, but its a great start. Wish us luck.

Please post Delegate meetup link for GA!

My daughter is a delegate also but needs some personal instruction and support on the process in GA and the plan! I will make sure she gets the contact! She is a working full time days and going to college full time nights and weekends but dedicated to go as far as possible in the delegate process!

This Brightened My Day

Bump.

We can all say what needs to be done, but who here lead by example today?

To answer your question your

To answer your question your first setp is to obtain a copy of roberts rules of order

www.robertsrules.org : Learn them and live them

# 2 : You must show up to every convention prior to your state convention and you should also become part of a meetup group in your area so you will not be alone.

# 3 : Your state is bound to vote for Huck for 1 ballot vote then you may vote for who you wish unless you can obtain the majority at your state convention to unbind your delegates.

If you have any more questions email me at newspaper4paul@hotmail.com and i will gladly answer them.

Dr. Steve Parent

Excellent questions.

I am in exactly the same boat in Iowa.

Try the contact from your state as mentioned above.
Don't bother asking Steve Parent, his "expertise" does not seem to include the kind of practical advice that real delegates need in navigating this convention maze. He seems to gloss over the difficulties and greatly oversimplifies the processes and differences between states.

There is a training video on the website, "John Tate explains caucuses and conventions (88 minutes)" that is entertaining at least but short on generally applicable information:

https://voters.ronpaul200...

I found a very helpful guide to the delegate process in Iowa which might be similar to Georgia.

http://www.ronpaulforums....

The bottom line is that you need to somehow find out who the other RP delegates are in order to vote with and not against them. How you do that I don't know.

i find your comments on Dr.

i find your comments on Dr. Parent unfair. I have been following these delagate threads for a while and I have decided #1, he is deeply committed to this cause and #2 he is quite knowledgeable in these matters. Everytime someone blasts him, I quietly pray he won't be offended and finally leave this site. I think that he has done a lot of good getting people to get signed on as delegates and continues to encourage. I myself missed the sign up dates for delegates in NC otherwise I myself would be emailing him for info and advice.

I agree.

I agree.

Gloss over? I have said this

Gloss over?

I have said this more times than i can count and that is every state is different even counties differ from one to another.

It is not possible to give anyone an answer unless i know what is in your bylaws or party rules and if i have a specific question i can answer it if i have the information i need to address it.

Most of you didn't know how much power delegates have and many others didn't know a damn thing about the delegate process at all.

I am sorry i wasted your time by encouraging people to get involved in the system so they can actually effect change.

You have a great group of people in IA that i have spoken with on many occasions and i assure you they are fully prepared.

Knock me if you must i really do not care EDUCATE yourselves and stop relying on other people to guide you.

Dr. Steve Parent

You seem to have a lot of credibility about the delegate process

How about using it to get a central clearing house for good delegate-related information?

A separate section of this website, a dedicated website, or one of the forums would be nice for starters.

If you know how to gather the names of Ron Paul delegates (you seem to know a few in Iowa), then I wish that you would share the technique with the rest of us. Not all of them (most of them?) in my district are part of meetup groups. I can't believe that this is the only state or district with that challenge.

By the way, if the other delegates in Iowa are "fully prepared" I wish that they would let us in on it (my wife is a delegate and I am an alternate to the 5th district and state conventions). We haven't exactly been operating in stealth mode, but so far we don't know who to vote for other than the delegates that we have personally recruited. Competition for the national delegate seats is going to be fierce, and we (Iowans) have already suffered losses at the county conventions by splitting our votes. Unless we can start working as a team we are going to have our butts handed to us.

Maybe you can lobby the National campaign to call for delegates to register (sort of like the precinct captain section) so that we can identify and contact each other.

Maybe you can get them to supply campaign-approved resolutions, state specific delegate handbooks, and/or model nomination speeches. I am tired of reinventing the wheel.

I am glad that you have inspired people to become delegates.
But it is going to take a lot more organization to turn those numbers into national delegates (with or without the ability to vote for Ron Paul).

Delegates: Please Read

This article is not about rules and regulations, but it should be interesting to all delegates.

I have no idea, since I'm not a delegate

but this is for a bump so more people have a chance to see your thread.

You might want to try to talk to Dr. Parent? (on this site)

I'm a delegate

And I was wondering the same thing.
