Iran to OPEC: Stop Oil Sales in Dollars
Sunday April 6, 3:34 pm ET
Iranian President Urges OPEC to Form Joint Bank, Stop Pricing Oil Trades in US Dollars

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is urging OPEC members to form a joint bank and stop pricing oil trades in U.S. dollars.

According to the Iranian government's Web site, Ahmadinejad told OPEC Secretary General Abdalla Salem el-Badri the cartel "should establish a joint bank as well as having joint currency."

Oil is priced in U.S. dollars on the world market, and the currency's depreciation has concerned producers because it has contributed to rising crude prices and eroded the value of their dollar reserves.

Iran has repeatedly urged OPEC members to shift sales away from dollar. But Iran's proposal to trade oil in a basket of currencies is not supported by enough OPEC members, which include staunch U.S. allies such as leading producer Saudi Arabia.

All at once

Ahmadinejad is begging to be bombed at the same time that US politicians are building a case for war on Iran. I wonder if Scott Ritter's odds have changed (he said 80% chance of war with Iran).

Here's a link to a very interesting related aticle from Captain Eric May of Ghost Troop.

didnt

Didnt Iran state this like 2 months ago? or did the MSM just get around to covering this?

This is just a game

of chess. It doesn't matter. All other currencies are fiat as well. I don't see it happening because the Saudi's don't have the military needed to take on Iran, so the minute they agree to move to something else, all bets are off and we just hand Saudi over to Iran.

It's not..

.. just a game for the typical American citizen. US dollars are "backed" by oil (petro-dollars).

If OPEC breaks away from the US dollar then oil will become MUCH CHEAPER for the rest of the world but not for us because the dollar will become utterly worthless when it loses its "petro-dollar" support.

During the 1950's the US setup a rigged deal with Saudi Arabia and other OPEC countries to buy our "cash" in exchange for us making them wealthy with oil sales. Their purchases of our cash are funded by over-inflated oil prices. When the OPEC members no longer have to pay our extortion fees then oil will drop in price significantly. But not for us...

Not true

We have more oil than we could ever need in Alaska. The reason we have never used it was based upon a complex dipomatic agreement with the middle east to have the market based on US dollars. In return we would import all oil (Canada is our largest supplier) in return for some percentage of the sale going to supporting our national debt. If Opec and especially Saudi's go another direction all bets are off and we have a resource that will give us true independence. Everything is in place, but we have never done anything in order to protect the almighty dollar. Once the international community moves away from the dollar we can shift to using our own oil.

But once again, are the Saudi royalty willing to give up their power and lives for a some money. Because once they agree to usinge something other than the dollar we will pull out and allow them to be eaten by the wolves. Survival makes people do stange things.

Yes..

.. but we can't extract extortion fees from OURSELVES like we have been doing with OPEC for half a century.

That would be like the local mafia charging themselves for protection money...

Petro-dollars are backed by requiring other people to buy our cash "reserves"(instead of being backed by gold/silver).

Diamonds aren't scare but DeBeers makes them artificially scarce so they can drive up the price and maintain their power. Same deal with oil...

Exactly and why the United States went to war with Iraq

and now are looking at going to war with Iran.
With OPEC saying they will switch off the dollar within 10 years it is better dealt with now rather than later. And of course not by going to war.

It's exactly the same..

.. as the local mafia or gang demanding protection money from businesses and beating the store owners up and throwing bricks through their windows when they don't comply.

Bunch of gangsters....

Don't call it "hitting back"

Iran is simply taking note of the fact that US dollars are a lousy world reserve currency, backed by little besides naked force. (Accept this worthless paper in exchange for your valuable oil, or we'll give you what Saddam got, instead). Iran isn't attacking us, any more than we are attacking ourselves when we buy gold and silver to protect ourselves from the Fed's mass-produced bumwad.

However, there is a moral principle involved here that is worth noting. The Fed's printing of fiat dollars is the engine of our government's power, and the foundation of its empire. Ask yourself: Is our government's imperial behavior a force for good in the world -- or not? Think of all the wonderful things it has accomplished in Iraq and Afghanistan ... do I hear crickets? And if you were a foreigner, and knew that by accepting US dollars you were doing a little bit to help keep our Empire in business -- would you regard that as a good thing, or a bad thing?

It isn't the currency you "price" it in

as long as it "sells" in USD that matters to the hegemony men.

Semantics? Not certain but, post 3-20-2008 Iran most likely means price AND sell.

why wouldn't they. . .

We issued sanctions against thier central bank 3/20/08 and have threatened any others who continue to business with Iran's central bank. It makes perfect since to ask for alternative currency especially when our dollar is worth about 20 cents.
