The coming depression...suggestions on healing herbs that you can grow

I'm interested in some suggestions on herbal remedies. Plants that you & I can grow in our back yards. I think in the hard times to come they will be good for trade & protection for our families.

So what are all you going to grow? What does it do?

I'll start us off:

I plan to incorporate Echinacea in my landscaping because it can be used as a antibiotic. Also, I plan to grow Basil because it has antifungal, antibacterial & immune enhancing abilities. It also tasts great :-)

any other suggestions?

Great Home Made Tincture Recipie

Our good Dr is fighting for our constitutional rights to use alternative meds, some of us are as well. The founding fathers cared enough about us to put this in our constitution.

That said... I think this is a great thread. We here at the Daily Paul are a community of people who care for one another, that is in my opinion a family. I appreciatte the wealth of info I've gleaned from everyone.

I've used this recipie for years for everything from strep throat, upper respitory, colds, flue & even an ear ache. Plus it keeps for years and is yummy on greens and as a meat marinade.

Fill a glass jar 1/3 full of each of the following: onion, garlic & fresh ginger root. All you need to do is wash well & smack w/a knife to lightly crush.

Leave a bit of room at the top for 2 tblsp of ground cyanne pepper or several fresh peppers (I've always used ground). Fill the jar with organic apple cider vinegar (the kind w/the good gunk at the bottom). Keep in a dark closet & shake every day for 2 weeks. Strain & return to a dark bottle. I use small eye drop bottles myself. I refrigerate it, but it can be stored in a celler just as well.

This is so potent that an adult needs only an eye dropper full 3 x a day. A young child about 1/3 of that. I've diluted w/olive oil for ear infections but try it yourself before you use it on your child please. After a few doses you will begin to feel your mucus membranes drying & it's time to cut the dosage down.

It's not real intimacy friendly hehehe... but it's amazing, cheap & very easily found ingredients. This was used for the bubonic plage from what I was told... I don't know if that is fact or not.

Garlic & onion are tremendous antibiotics, the ginger stands alone in natures garden... there is nothing else like it. I encourage everyone to grow some, just a few grams ground into your food can detoxify 20lbs of meat. The day may come when we have to eat things that are not as fresh & sterile as we'd like.

Correction

2 tblsp is the amount of cyanne for a gallon jar. When I do a quart jar full I use a teaspoon of cyanne. This was just a suggestion that some might find useful. No offense intended.

looks like

you missed the point. I come here for political discussions pertaining to Ron Paul (#1), the presidential election, and all topical and current events relating to government, civil liberties, the war, delegate victories, newsworthy items, good DVDs to get, etc. You know exactly what topics go here, like information you can't get elsewhere, either funny or serious, doesn't matter.

I have nothing against gardens. I have one. I've been a vegetarian for 20 years and only use alternative medicine. I don't need a lecture on how it's my right to use herbs is in the Constitution or what position Ron Paul holds on alternative medicine. I've already read his positions on pretty much every issue.

My point is I go elsewhere for my nutritional and alternative plants and garden information. Do I need to see threads like somebody is telling me how to make a meat marinade that's just yummy? Where am I? Martha Stewart's house?

I'm going to put something in a child's ears because some unknown "family" (could be friend or foe) on this forum posted some advise? Get real. A lot of us are here because our trust has been abused by the government & we've seen a lot of things sabotaged. We want to know what's going on in the world. So I'll go elsewhere for any ear drop advice, thanks.

"We here at the Daily Paul are a community of people who care for one another, that is in my opinion a family." So, if you're so close to everyone here, then get their emails and start a talk group. I belong to one of those myself but there is a moderator who says when something is off topic. as they should.

I've noticed the past few weeks, especially since the delegate posts & news appeared, how there's been a bunch of off topic threads. Gardening, used hygiene products GROSS, etc., is what I've started to notice -- sure makes a good diversion topic. But by all means, garden away, just stating my opinion LOL

for crying out loud

this garden stuff is way off topic. I love herbs and plants just as much as anybody but this is the wrong forum.

There's a million websites for herbs, plants, etc. or just check out one called "I am a bored housewife and I have a shovel and a garden hose. What would you suggest?"

Why don't you start your own Survivalist website although I'm sure there's already tons out there.

Hey, I know, go on McCain's website and ask what we should be planting for the next 100 years after the apocalypse when everything is blown to hell. Meanwhile, we'll be talking about delegates, changing the voting system, the Federal Reserve and oh yeah, news related to Ron Paul.

just wondering......

If you have read the guidelines for posting threads for this site?

Someone offered a "secret site" yesterday. Maybe that would be more appealing to you. We share ALL types of info here. If a thread isn't of interest to you, you could just ignore it.....What arrogance you display.

Why..

.. would you want to run Ron Paul supporters off to other sites? The more people on Daily Paul there are at any given time increases Daily Paul's hit rate and the more revenue manystrom gets from Google Ads and other sources based on hit rate. Are you saying manystrom needs less revenue and website traffic?

The self-reliance posts on Daily Paul are VERY popular. Also, self-reliance is the basis for personal freedom is it not? And Ron Paul is all about freedom and taking personal responsibility. Self-reliance makes us stronger both individually and as a nation against enemies both foreign and domestic.

Do you think the people who read and post to the self-reliance topics only read and post to self-reliance topics? What if you just avoided the topics you don't like or don't find relevant?

Also, non-obsessive people need to take breaks from heavy intense topics now and then. People need balance.

I think you are just plain wrong about this...

(=

I already belong

to a nutrition and green/gardening forum. There's also many great websites that have reliable information. I take my breaks from intense topics there. I come here for political news. That's why.

Chill out!

Just ignore the thread if you dont like it...jeez
But heres a political tie in for you for medicinal herbs!

Cannabis- depression, nausea, appetite stimulant, cancer sufferers benefit greatly from it and it should be able to be grown for personal use.

All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent" Thomas Jefferson

Do you have..

.. difficulty ascertaining from forum topic titles which ones are about politics and which ones are about self-reliance?

I mean, I don't care for some of the other topics but it doesn't bother me that others are discussing them. I just don't open them...

Yarrow, and learn about local wild herbs

Yarrow grows nearly everywhere, but if you cannot find it locally or wish to have it handy, it is very easy to grow. Every bit of the plant is useful, and it is anti-whatever comes along, just about. Too many uses to list, enjoy the researching of them yourself!
Nature has provided for us, there will be cures for almost everything that grows locally. I pray I never need atropine, but I know where the belladonna grows.

Juniper tree leafs are anti-microbial

bugs hate junipers, its good to chew on, its anti-microbial ,and it cleans your breath, teeth and stomache

AeroGarden

I can vouch for the Aerogarden. Excellent for someone without a green thumb. Great for those whose growing season is short.
Can grow just about anything with it, from herbs to vegetables.
When it comes to some vegetables they recommend using dwarf varieties.

I hope everyone who can would begin to grow their own food, as a way to take care of one's self as much as possible, and also a way to decrease our dependence on foreign oil providing America with better security.

It's time for us to step over the fool's in government, and begin to lead our country in the direction it should be going, rather than sit around waiting and wondering what government will do for us, in turn immobolizing us to do nothing for ourselves.

One of the most important ones

you cannot grow, but you can find it and pick it in the wild: Usnea barbata, it is a lichen that hangs off of trees, and it can be identified positively very easily for amateurs, it is greyish green, and looks like hair, but when fresh, if you pull on the hair like strands, and it breaks on the outside layer, and the inside, white part is elastic and stretches, before breaking you have the right stuff! Look it up on google to see what it looks like. It is so important, because it is anti fungal, anti viral, and antibiotic, and very strong. It is good for pneumonia, anthrax, strep, staph, ear infections, cystitis, and many fungal things. But, it is not solvent in water, so you must use vodka or 1/2 water and 1/2 everclear to make it. Just use 1 oz herb to 4or5 oz. of the vodka or everclear mix and chop herb very fine, shake in jar, let sit in dark place and shake daily for 2 or 3 weeks, strain the liquid, and store in dark glass bottles for up to 8 years. (It is the liquid you use.) This would be a very good thing for emergency, no?

I've not seen that around

I've not seen that around here but I'll keep an eye out next time we are in the woods. That would be a GREAT thing to have!

does it grow everywhere in

does it grow everywhere in the continental US??

as for me and my home, we shall worship the LORD

Yes, you can buy it through herb

places on the net, but it is very expensive, and in very short supply, as it sells fast. I am fortunate, in that my grandchildren who live in the mountains, where here in the west it is found, pick it for me and save it up for me until I see them. I believe it probably grows in most states, but most is picked for the market in Washington State in the rain forest, where it is especially abundant. When my husband had a bad infection was put on a strong antibiotic and when over , he came down with a superinfection, acc. to doctor, caused by being on the antibiotic, so they gave him an extremely strong one, and said to be on it for 2 months! He was so ill from the antibiotic, I took him off of it, and made usnea tincture for him, and he was better in a week. The doctor had wanted to put him in the hospital. I will never again use their antibiotics, or drugs. Another good one is Pau D'arco. I cured my 12 years of 15 plantars warts, which I had tried every cure for, and didn't work, until I went on Pau D'arco for 1 month. Havn't had another plantars wart for 4 years.

Wow...

.. I think I have that stuff growing all over one of my plum trees and I was about to cut it down!

If I took a picture of it and emailed it to you could you positively ID it for me?

Sure, I didn't get your email yet

but I am guessing you live in the Southeast, where it grows like crazy, it is seen on the trees in Gone With the Wind.

Hmmm..

.. I googled it and got these pics:

http://images.google.com/...

That's not spanish moss which is in the movie... and it's not my plum tree stuff either. =P

I wonder if the stuff on my plum tree is good for anything... other than making me think my plum tree is ill. ;)

Spanish moss?

I'll take a picture of it soon and send you a message through you profile contact info. =)

Umm

Yea thats what I thought...grows on which side of the tree?

defiantly southern .

I think they are related

http://www.google.com/sea...
here is a picture, but like i told you in previous post, you can tell positively, by pulling apart the strand, and the outside layer of the strand will break before the inside, because the white inside is elastic, and will stretch before breaking. Be glad to see your picture and see if it is the same.

They are..

.. in the same genus. =)

I'll send a pic in a day or two...

Thank you

Is that "Spanish Moss"?

Growing..

.. preparing, storing and using the hundreds of various herbs is mind-numbingly complex. I strongly suggest getting some references books. Following are the two books I have and I love them:

Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs
http://www.amazon.com/Rod...

Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine: The Definitive Home Reference Guide to 550 Key Herbs with all their Uses as Remedies for Common Ailments
http://www.amazon.com/s/r...

I got them really cheap used on Amazon...

=)

I'll check those out thanks!

I'll check those out thanks!

Camomile

is good for its calming effect.

Peppermint is great for nausea.

I've found chives extremely easy to grow. I'm not sure what they're good for but I love them on my eggs.

I will remember that

I just tuned in to CNN.com and watched all of the celebrities endorsing McCain, Clinton and Obama, and I feel I am need of peppermint tea right now. Thankyou.

You don't even need to make a tea.

Just grab a fistful of peppermint leaves and sniff away whenever you see one of the "axis of evil" on TV.

"Observe the masses, and do the opposite."

I make all our family's medicines from herbs I grow, or

pick in the wild. Here are the ones I grow: (well the ones i can think of, it is a blizzard outside right now). NETTLES, my favorite, useful for many things, and SO nutritious, dandelion, yes I take seeds from wild ones, and scatter them in my yard. feverfew, for headaches, echinacea, mullein, for coughs, and the root for incontinence, licorice, for many things, st. john's wort, horehound, best decongestant, chives (for cooking), lovage (for both), cilantro, for cleansing from heavy metals, chamomile,a sedative, motherwort, garlic, parsley , comfrey , rue, spearmint, peppermint, sheep sorrel, strawberries, (for eating the berries, roots for diarreah, leaves for one of best sources of vitamin c. , oregano, winter savory, catnip, for fever, hollyhock (for same thing as marshmallow), lemon balm, for herpes type things, like cold sores, valerian, for relaxing and sleeping, lavender, Then I pick tons when I visit my son's family in the mountains.

Whoa!

=P

grow some cilantro. If you

grow some cilantro. If you eat a little of fresh cilantro everyday it cleanses the body of heavy metals (mercury, lead,) and is also a very effective natural antibiotic and has been proven to kill salmonella than most over the counter antibiotics.

Cilantro

are the leaves, and coriander are the seeds of the same herb. I love the spice made from the ground seeds, and use it in alot of recipes, but have not researched it yet to know if it has the same benefits of the leaves.

No, the seeds don't have

the same benefit, but i use the seeds to make venison sausage. By the way, most of my gardens are permanent beds, mulched, and I just let it go to seed and it comes up like a weed every year, like my dill, and chamomile, so I never have to plant it. Same with lettuce, although I do plant that again, so I have an all summer supply.

Mo' info..

Coriander seeds have a health-supporting reputation that is high on the list of the healing spices. In parts of Europe, coriander has traditionally been referred to as an "anti-diabetic" plant. In parts of India, it has traditionally been used for its anti-inflammatory properties. In the United States, coriander has recently been studied for its cholesterol-lowering effects.
http://www.whfoods.com/ge...
--------------------
Coriander has been used as a folk medicine for the relief of anxiety and insomnia in Iranian folk medicine. Experiments in mice support its use as an anxiolytic.[7] Coriander seeds are also used in traditional Indian medicine as a diuretic by boiling equal amounts of coriander seeds and cumin seeds, then cooling and consuming the resulting liquid.[8] In holistic and some traditional medicine, it is used as a carminative and for general digestive aid.
http://en.wikipedia.org/w...
--------------------
Stimulant, aromatic and carminative. The powdered fruit, fluid extract and oil are chiefly used medicinally as flavouring to disguise the taste of active purgatives and correct their griping tendencies. It is an ingredient of the following compound preparations of the Pharmacopceia: confection, syrup and tincture of senna, and tincture and syrup of Rhubarb, and enters also into compounds with angelica gentian, jalap, quassia and lavender. As a corrigent to senna, it is considered superior to other aromatics. If used too freely the seeds become narcotic. Coriander water was formerly much esteemed as a carminative for windy colic.
http://www.botanical.com/...
--------------------

You can use the roots of coriander as well as the seeds and leaves.

Yes, that would make sense

The dish I gave the recipe to below, was from an Egyptian friend and considered medicinal. The other dish I make when feeling off, is homemade chicken noodle soup, with tons of tarragon leaves. Totally delicious and you feel better imediately. I usually gravitate towards certain herbs intuitively for whatever I need at the time. I used to crave black licorice if I had an upset stomache and found out later it is good for digestive purposes. Our natives were so much more in tune with all of this, now people just buy into drugs pushed on TV.

Actually..

.. the Europeans were big on herbal medicine also. The modern pharmacy industry didn't really start taking off until the 1920's.

My great-grandmother down here in a Missippi was the local herbal lady in her small town. She was literally the only doctor many people ever saw. I remember as a small child walking out in the woods with her a few times while she gathered herbs for medicine.

=)

Not to get off on a tangent

On recipes, because I love to cook, and we could take over the site with one more subject but here goes. Whenever I am feeling a little under the weather I make a delicious one pot dish that uses crushed coriander (the spice, not from me homegrown). Get one sirloin roast, add fresh or 2 boxes spinich, 1 can of tomato sauce, 1 can of beef broth, put in roasting pan. Than in paper cup, mix about 4 tablespoons on coriander(I use store bought spice) and 4 tablespoons of crushed garlic, add water as needed to make a paste, add to meat mixture. Bake at around 375 untill tender, add water periodically, and mix mixtures. Very simple and delicious. Your garden sounds amazing.

This will be my one and only

recipe here, just did it because of the spice mentioned. Did not mean to offend the vegetarians here.

I seriously doubt...

.. libertarian vegetarians would mind at all. ;)

Feel free to post any meat recipes you have as long as they are delicious. =)

I was laughing

when I typed that. Sometimes you just need to take a break from the real serious issues. We need the funny videos too, every now and then.
