getting out of the dollar...lots of room for suggestions and comments here!
Respected economists such as Peter Schiff advise to get out of dollar...but what if you have less than $7 or 8,000? Europac ....(I called them twice) seems to be for investors with big portfolios. Who is going to take the time to help invest such little money...the brokerage commissions are too high and the NYSE sort of scares me, because of the dollar crisis..
Even the foreign stocks from what I understand that are exchanged on the NYSE are paid in dollars. What does a person do who doesn't have much money...just buy gold and silver? (The representative at Europac suggested buying gold). Does anyone know about ADR's...(buying foreign stocks through the New York Stock Exchange....are they safe?)
Any ideas about gold ETF's...where you don't actually have the gold in hand, but can buy and sell....and make a profit.
I"M TRYING TO LEARN ALL THIS....but feel lost! If you help me, you will be helping many others on this site who perhaps feel the same way! I've bought silver (still waiting to receive it after almost 2 months!), but not gold...where's the best place to buy gold and is there a difference between say for instance, "Credit Suisse Gold Bars" and others?

Everyday expenses?
I am a little confused about getting out of the dollar as well. I have been purchasing silver eagles and some pre-64 dimes and such.
However, how do you function in your business if not in dollars? Do I open a bank account in a foreign country? Then get a visa card to purchase gas and food. Then how do I send US dollars to a foreign bank when I get paid by my clients? Also, wouldn't I need a check book to pay utilities? Maybe it isn't possible to completely get out of the dollar for day to day living?
Any insights or help would be greatly appreciated.

Very Big Question
How difficult would it be to, say, withdraw $75,000 from a bank and then go buy gold/silver and keep this info private? Do you have to report to the government any of your purchases over a certain amount?

My suggestion is to stockpile imperishable foods--freeze-dried, honey, sugar, salt, wine, and wheat.
Then drill a water well.
Then plant a vegetable garden--or fence a patch for livestock and raise goats or cattle. Preferably both.
After you have a one year's supply of food, the beginnings of a farm, and a well, you should then make decisions based on gold coins or money. Not before.

Tools are also a good investment as is silver.
Of course if you melt down your silver and make it into a hammer it is a good way to hide it from the government. Same goes for gold, this has been a trick used to get gold out of the country for years. Buy gold at pawn shops, melt it down into tools or parts and ship it out of the country.
My recommendation
A lot of people here have posted a lot of different opinions about where to put this money, and none of them are "wrong" per se. Local recession, global depsression, total societal meltdown - these are all possiblities (although nobody has discussed currency revaluation, which I see as likely since we've done it a few times in the past when we've been here). Nobody, however, can predict the future. So, I have my money stored in what I call my "hedge portfolio": 20% in physical metals (gold/silver - weighted silver), 20% in land, 20% in Euros (raw currency), 20% in European equities/utilities and the rest in industrial mining stock (none are domestic). A portion of my portfolio draws dividends, a portion preserves wealth, a portion gains value and a portion is a fallback. Is this a growth portfolio? Not really. Is it a preservation portfolio? Not really again. But, what this portfolio ensures is that regardless of what happens, I'll have something left to live on - or at least enough money to travel to greener pastures.
- Mixer
PS - Putnam's International Equity Fund is my vehicle for European equities. I can recommend them - YMMV.
I also think next to silver,
I also think next to silver, rural ranch/farmland is great! but i say this... the euro comes from a bunch od socialist countries.. they inflate the currancy also.. at some point the whole world will lose confidence in government issued script. the european equities will go the same way that american equities will. don't think for a moment that those eurpean monetary vehicles are any better then the US... ALL governments are corrupt.. they will screw up their own currencies!

Are you not worried
about the Euro tanking? (I've read it will follow USD)
Yes, but...
the question becomes when and what happens first. The Euro may tank in 2015 while the dollar may tank in 2008; so in 2008, having Euros is a good idea and dollars a bad one, while in 2015, having Euros might not be smart. That's why I call it my "hedge portfolio" - I spread my wealth around to counter as many possible/probably outcomes as I can manage. If the US goes under economically, and the rest of the world just suffers a serious blow, then there is a good chance Euros will wholly replace the USD as global reserve. And it's always a good idea to have some of the global reserve currency on hand. My stocks and metals will probably be enough to get me settled wherever it looks like the best place would be - while my land deflates and my USD assets become worthless. But if the whole world replay the Great Depression, then I have some metals and land and all of my paper (stocks, currencies, etc) will just be firestarters. But, in the unlikey event that we can keep the charade going for another 30 years, then my portfolio as a whole should keep up with real inflation and even exceed it slightly so I should be able to retire comfortably.
susan.... as bad as our m3
susan.... as bad as our m3 is... 15%, russia and china are doing the same .. the russians m3 is at 19%! the only reason why the ruble hasn't collapsed is because of the oil wealth and mining they have in their countries.. at some point soon, all people will lose faith in the the government issued paper money! they will then all go to gold and silver..
now think about this.. there are 6 billion ounces of gold in the world today
there are about 1 billion ounces of silver.. when 6.5 billion people decide pretty much all at once that they need precious metals.. whats going to happen to silver and gold? thats 1 ounce of gold and 1/10 of an ounce or so of silver per person when there are going to be trillions in paper money seeking metals! watching the US dollar die is just a pre run for all paper government promise currancy! it may take some time but it will accelerate.. the chinese people are now allowed to buy silver and gold.. the arabs are buying gold with their dollars, same with the russians.. but the west has not caught on yet.. I bet if you asked every neighbor on your street if they have purchased gold or silver they would say no! this thing hasn't even started yet! the only thing that would change my mind is if helicopter Ben pulled a volcker and started to increase interest rates! but as we see he won't do that.

FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best investment is in FOOD PROVISIONS!!! Please let me explain. Well, we all pretty much agree that we are moving rather quickly into a government completely opposite of what the inspired founders created. The way things are happening, and they are happening fast, we will soon depend on Uncle Sam for even the food stuff we eat. History has proven that such a socialistic system ultimately kills many of those that become dependent on it, especially if you don't agree with the system. I've been watching the supply of food and how it is created/distributed/stored for a few years now and there have been some very interesting things going on. As you know, many important things that people should be informed about are suppressed from the media; this is one of those very important things you are not hearing about.
The whole world seams as if it has been cursed with a famine and we are one crop failure away from an enormous disaster. Is it caused by the latest solar cycle or the great creator, I don't know. All I know its happening and it appears its going to get worse before it gets better (that sounds a lot like the economic forecast for the US). There are many facts, numbers, and statistics that I would like to share but I'll let you go dig that up for yourselves. The one fact that should scare the socks off ya is that the US Grain reserves are nightmarishly low!!!
What a powerful illusion that is created when we walk in our supermarkets. So many choices and so much abundance. There is one thing that is quickly becoming impossible to buy and that is grains in bulk. It is only a matter of time before the same storm reaches your local super market. Higher prices will be the immediate cause; however, if prices increase sufficiently that the poorest of our own nation can no longer buy sufficient food then riots and social collapses will be inevitable. Unfortunately, Uncle Sam will step in to save the day with food rationing for all! Hurray!! We are seeing the same thing happening on the world scale right now with Haiti and Egypt.
The interesting thing about this problem is that it cannot be fixed by printing money out of thin air like other problems we have encountered this last year. It takes a few harvests to heal and the forecasts for the next few harvests are not good. The return on a Gold/silver investments is only as good as the education your buyer has on the true value of precious metals. Unfortunately, there are not too many educated people out there as you all probably already know; however, everybody has to eat and nobody will ignore those stomach pains. How many gold coins will you pay for a cup of pottage when I'm the only seller?
If food is prepared and stored properly, it can last up to 30+ years.
Let's prepare temporally to stand as a free people and resurrect the constitution when the time comes!
You can thank central planning, govt. subsidies, corruption,
and a number of other communist/fascist programs for most of the food problems. But, yes, buy food.
I'm starting with rice and beans.

foreign currency
If you could stand the pressure go to forex.com. Buy euros, yens, Aus, etc. They will give you $50,000 dummy account to play with. You don't need a lot of money to buy foreign currency. They will leverage your trades. Therefore with your $7,000 you could easily buy $100,000 in euros and whenever the euro goes up a couple pennys you make thousands, but also if it goes down you'll lose $4,000 like I did in one night, but two weeks later the money all came back without me changing anything. Just play with a practice account for 30 days free trial and see if it is for you.

With the small amount of money were talking about. If foreign currency is what they want, they should just go to an American Express or Thomas Cook money exchange and buy some. Banks can do it but it will take longer.

Question..Let's suppose I have 100oz of silver in my safe and a couple oz. of gold...the dollar collapses...but my mortage, utilities etc. still take fiat money..
I hear varying arguement about exchanging silver for fiat money...but wouldn't this be the case in order to survive in some circumstances?
Kat, at some point all
Kat,
at some point all those companies you mention will only take gold and silver for payment.. why would they want useless paper dollars if they are ..well worthless! Kat try to get 1,000 ounces of silver.. I truly beleive that silver will run par with gold.. for every 1000 ounces of silver you have, you will have 1,000,000 in todays purchasing power.. with that you can pay off everything.. in either script which the government will issue or trade s
straight coins.. silver and gold are money! they are not commodities as people have been conditioned to think! at some point the original money (gold and silver) will take its place where it had been for thousands of years!

Hi kat.
First of all, the dollar HAS collapsed -- started back in 1913 and was given it's final "shove" in 1971. You have been living with a collapsing dollar all your life so take a breather.
You'll probably get 50 different answer to this, but here's my attempt (I haven't had coffee yet today so bare with me).
In the case of a major dollar "dump", as long as your income is steady, it wouldn't effect your mortgage and utilities too much but it will effect your buying of gas, food and foreign-made goods.
As far as selling your metal, you might want to base it on Maslow's Hierarchy of needs:
Physiological Needs (food/water)
Safety Needs (security/protection)
Social Needs (belonging/love)
Esteem Needs (recognition/status)
Self-Actualization
I don't know how much your mortgage is so you'd need to work out how much metal would need to be to clear the debt.. Also, at some point, you could always try calling your bank and trying to "short sell" your home. Banks hate taking houses back, so you time your call right and ask your bank what they will take (in cash) to clear the debt. If you have $100k left on your loan, they might offer to take $80k cash -- you offer them $50k. Don't offer any information like, "We have run into tough times . . ." Just ask about clearing the debt and offer no personal information regarding your financial status.
OR, you could wait for the $500,000 US notes (like they have in Zimbabwe) and pay off your house for what used to buy a piece of hard candy.
I have noticed you worrying about your mortgage before. Have you considered selling your home and downsizing, even renting? I mean really downsizing -- 4 kids/2 bunkbeds/1 room kind of downsizing.
With the small amount of metal you have kat, I would hang on to them in order to ensure my family could get food/water/medical care -- however this would have to be a desperate situation. Start stocking up on foods. I also recommend looking into a Steripen (Google it).
Bottom line: you might have to make decisions "on the run". If you have to sell a coin for fiat dollars, do so but don't hang on to them long.
Sorry I can't be of more help. It would be easier if we knew more about your situation.
Also, weren't you going to have a garage sale?

Thanks Lisa...Always the rock you are...
I do worry about my mortgage and house ALOT.! It holds alot of sentimental value, but aside from the emotion..It wouldn't be practical to downsize just yet...But, maybe I'm wrong..
You see, I owe only $80,000 on house...4 bedroom/3bath...and purchased property behind it (in cash) to expand it to about 1/4 of an acre.
It appraised for $299,000 in early 2007...and property values in this area are pretty stable because of the influx of miltary that move here to work at Stennis Space Center...
But, the breadwinner (my husband) works for a major casino...and mainly for tips..His base pay is probably close to six dollars an hour...His tip pay per hour usually reaches between $28-42 ..
So if the economy goes south further...That $50,000-$60,000 a year job might become only $12,000...real fast...
That is why I'm so nervous...Casino workers will be the one of the first to feel the pain..
Yep...The garage sale is on the way!

You might be glad to know and others can correct me
if I'm wrong but, in times of depression, gambling actually increases. Tipping, however, I'm not so sure about.
What are you doing with the 1/4 acre? Please don't tell me you have plans for a pool. Can it be accessed from another road or only through your yard. What is the zoning on it? Could it be changed? Reason being, I used to buy cheap mobile homes and resell them (absolutely the best return on my money ever on anything). If times were tough, you could buy a mobile home for $5k (or less). You could put two on your 1/4 acre (with some privacy fencing) and sell the homes (on a note) and rent the space. Would take some work and preparation but it would definitely pay for itself. If I still lived in the US, I would be the mobile home queen. I literally had people crying for me to help them.
Anyway, just having a brain dump. Get some fruit trees growing in the meantime.

"Hi George: I live in Las Vegas Nevada, and heard on the news tonight, channel 3 that MGM Grand Casino was going to lay off more than 400 + managerial positions, which positions, and which casinos were not announced as yet. My husband got layed off last Nov 07, and has barely worked as his casino closed a gourmet room. George: Las Vegas is becoming a ghost town, for the month of March the news reported that 16,000 homes were in pre-foreclosure. I'm not sure exactly what that means, but I'll pass it on to you anyway.
Keep up the good work, you have a great sense of humor. If you use my comments please put me as anonymous, ok, as I don't want to hexapodies any future employment opportunities that may come his way."

Oh God...
I actually bought it in the beginning to put in a pool (sigh)...but it's just a 50x140 lot behind my existing property.all together about a 1/4 acre..and we have a brutal property owners assoc...I don't think they would allow a mobile home..unless things got so bad...that I would lose my southern New Orleans manners, put a trailer up...and tell them where to shove it!
pool....source of water
Having a pool isn't all that bad. We've used the water in ours to flush toilets when the power was out for a few days. I'm sure you could also purify it for drinking water. Or water your gardens with it. Don't bash having a huge supply of water sitting on your property.
Better work out what you can and can't do on that
land and get going. You made an investment by buying that lot so get it working for you somehow. At least make it pay for its own property tax.

Kat, that could play out in
Kat, that could play out in one of two ways:
1) The dollar rapidly deflates, but is still in use, in which case you just sell some of your silver and/or gold and pay your bills as usual; the actual "price" of silver/gold is irrelevant;
2) The dollar colllapses to zero, probably overnight: In this case, you will have a LOT more to worry aobut than paying your mortgage! And those holding your debts will as well. But in this scenario, SOMETHING will soon be reinstituted as money, whether gold, silver, some foreign currency, etc., into which you could still sell your silver/gold and pay bills as before.
The point is, there will almost certainly always be SOMETHING circulating as money into which you can make your necessary payments; and if there is not, there would soon be.
Americans used to buy/sell with foreign money.
