Earthquake in Central Illinois

(CNN) -- A magnitude-5.2 earthquake, centered 131 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri, shook southern Illinois early Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There were few reports of damage immediately after the predawn quake, which struck at 4:36 a.m. (5:36 a.m. ET), but CNN affiliate WHAS-TV in Louisville, Kentucky, showed footage of rubble left in a street after a cornice fell off a brick building there.

The epicenter of the earthquake was about three miles below ground, six miles northwest of Mount Carmel, Illinois, and 38 miles north-northwest of Evansville, Indiana, according to the USGS.

People as far north as southern Michigan and as far west as Des Moines, Iowa, reported feeling the quake, according to The Associated Press.

I felt the rumbling here in Chicagoland at 4:07AM CT as a book fell off a shelf in the other room.

I just hope that this is not the little one before the "big one"--it could be the perfect opportunity for Herr Bush to declare martial law as Obama, Clinton, and McCain authorized in the Defense Authorization Act of 2007.

new madrid fault line

There is a major fault line that runs along the mississippi river called the new madrid fault line.

It has the potential to cause catastraphic events, and would likely cause major damage to buildings along the river if there was a big one. St Louis and Memphis would be in really bad shape. FEMA would most certainly be involved and martial law would be likely be enacted in those effected communities. The scope of the disaster would depend upon on the magnatude of the earthquake(s) and thus has the potential to dwarf Katrina.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w...

"The zone had four of the largest North American earthquakes in recorded history, with magnitudes estimated to be greater than 7.0 on the Richter scale, all occurring within a 3 month period between 1811 and 1812.

Large areas sank into the earth, fissures opened, lakes permanently drained, new lakes were formed, and forests were destroyed over an area of 150,000 acres (600 km²). Many houses at New Madrid were thrown down. "Houses, gardens, and fields were swallowed up" one source notes. But fatalities and damage were low, because the area was sparsely settled.

The earthquakes were felt as far away as New York City and Boston, Massachusetts, where churchbells rang.

This series of temblors caused permanent changes in the course of the Mississippi River, giving the illusion that it was flowing backward

Because of the change in the course of the Mississippi River, land was cut off from counties by the river and wound up on the other side of the new riverbed, on the other side of the Mississippi. The settlement of Reverie, Tennessee, in Tipton County was cut off and placed on the western bank of the Mississippi River on the Arkansas side.

Along the Tennessee/Arkansas state line, geological features are still present almost 200 years after the events, showing the former course of the Mississippi River as it was before the 1811/1812 earthquakes."

What does your gut tell you?

Having worked in the Intel community, and with the Intel community for around 30 years, you learn to develop a "gut" feeling on events.

Those of who live in the world, know the media tells you what the big boys want you to hear.

I have noticed a glut of earthquake stories especially over the last few months -- starting with the big Tsunami (spelling) (year ago?). My gut tells me something is being preped. There are certain ways to induce an earthquake.

I hope I am wrong, but I have had a feeling that it may be the excuse for martial law -- another big false flag if you will.

Dear God in Heaven; I pray with others, that I am wrong.

I just find it hard to believe that Chen and Bu will talk away voluntarily in January of 09. Too much blood on their hands. War crimes over 9-11, Afgan and Iraq -- and coming up Iran.

Old News here, folks ----

Old News here, folks ---- please don't bump it further!

No reports

I saw no reports of any quake of this magnitude on the web or national news...What is going on out there.

its old news

This was definitly in the news. I saw it when I got to work that day. I have friends of mine in Chicago and St Louis felt the larger one or its aftershocks. (You probably had to be in a highrise to feel it in Chicago)

The government does response training to prepare for when another major event happens on that fault line.

Odd

I don't see any of the earthquakes you guys are talking about at the usgs website. They are usually very good about reporting all of the earthquakes around the world. They have a special color for the "last hour", and it is typically close to real-time.

The CNN article linked seems to be from 04/18/2008 (check the URL), so this must be a past event. Can anyone confirm this?

Yep

I should have checked that first. Thanks.

Read Did something happen in Seattle

There is more info there on previous earthquakes in your area.

Stay alert

There are no booms and explosions before earthquakes. There is something going on in your area and its believed to be around Scotts Air Force base.

We have talked about this before

I live in earthquake country, California, and have never heard booms and explosive sounds before an earthquake. Of course they could be from an explosion afterwards caused by it; lots of strange activity going on.

another quake...

1:30 pm eastern may 6th, northern VA. I was listening to WTOP radio when they were saying that people were reporting loud booms and explosions! At first WTOP said they were not getting any response from local authorities and that the 'earthquake center reported no activity. About an hour later I read this on the site provided ealrier:

Old mother earth is rumbling lately!

woke me here

in KY bright and early. Didn't know weather to crawl under the bed or go back to sleep. Just felt a after shock here around 11:17am ET. Hopefully the worst is over with and the fault line has shifted all it's going to for a while.

We can all say what needs to be done, but who here led by example today?

Anniversary of 1906 earthquake

Kind of interesting because April 18 is the anniversary of the San Francisco 1906 quake.

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:5,6

That's Interesting.

Hopefully this doesn't start a lot of movement in other areas.

here in Indy

We Could Feel It East Of Cleveland

That was a pretty big shake from afar.

I felt it this morning too

Just got back into bed after feeding the baby. It was at the same time a train goes by about 5 miles from my house. I thought it was odd that the train would be shaking the house. Only considered earthquake with tongue in cheek comment to myself. Until my wife called me this morning on the way to work that she heard about the EQ on the news..

BTW.. I live in Kansas City, KS
