We need "permission" for so many things in this country...
Tonight I found out that in my town we need to have a permit simply to have a little campfire on our own property. So, we actually need permission from somebody in our township to have a campfire and roast marshmallows.
Not only that, we have to pay for this permission as well. My brother said he thinks the guy from the fire department said it was something like $50 per month for the permit.
It's not as if we live in the center of town, either, with neighbors all around us. We are 10 miles away from the center of town with 5 acres and a cleared backyard area of at least 100' x 60' or so.
I could see needing permission if I wanted to do something crazy like burn down the forest on my property, but not for a campfire.
We need "permission" for so many things in this country, are we even ever really free? Maybe it's not the entire country, it might just be New Jersey that is like this.
Ugh...
Simply another reason that we need more freedom minded politicians in our government.

They nickel and dollar you
for you just to live nowadays if we really think about it.
It's truly sad. If people would just realize most of their problems come from government running their lives for them.
Did they ever think that we might have more medically insured people, fewer poor, more jobs, better citizen security, if we all didn't get nickeled and dollared to death for basically every move we make in life.
These are just a few examples.
Why is being individually prosperous not encouraged by our government?

recreational or religious fires are exempt from any permit requirements. Have hot dogs and bibles on hand....
A motto a lot of us ...

I try to apply this wherever I can...I can usually take the hit for it. People will get so frustrated and fed up if you continually feign ignorance or outright stupidity that you can usually get away with ignoring stupid rules. :)

Freedom vs. Tyranny: Here We Go Again
By Darrell Corbyn
Most Americans believe we live in a free country where our money and lives are ours to control. They contrast our perceived freedom with openly Communist countries like China and North Korea and conclude that we must be a free country. But the oppressive laws, regulations and taxes imposed on us by recent Presidents and their administrations far exceed what was done to us by King George III of England before the American Revolution. Ronald Reagan recognized this in 1985: "America was born in the midst of a great revolution sparked by oppressive taxation...Well, my friends, the time has come for a second American revolution."
Taxes
When Americans think of taxes, most people immediately think of the income tax that is deducted from their wages. Unfortunately, this is only a small fraction of our contribution to our ever increasing government. Most of our contributions come in the form of an indirect tax. This can include taxes on items and services such as: our enormous gas tax, toll roads, license fees, permits, sales tax, property tax, entrance fees and at least eighty other taxes that we pay every year without thinking. There are also many hidden taxes that we never see that are passed on to us in the form of a price increase from manufacturers and businesses. Also there is the forgotten tax, inflation.
An indirect tax is considered voluntary because you are not forced to pay it unless you buy the product or use the service. Since these taxes and fees are placed on items and services most Americans use or need to operate in our society, they are hardly voluntary.
In all, US citizens are persuaded to give up to 64% of their income each year to the government for redistribution. This includes spending our money to fight undeclared wars, pay interest to the unconstitutional private Federal Reserve, and fund services that the majority of us don’t agree with or even know about. This is more than ten times as much as King George III was taxing us before we stood up against England in the American Revolution. Former IRS Commissioner T. Coleman Andrews said it all in 1956, "I believe that a better way to raise revenue not only can be found but must be found because I am convinced that the present system is leading us right back to the very tyranny from which those, who established this land of freedom, risked their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to forever free themselves..."
As long as we are able to keep buying a few luxury items and continue to get a check that has the appearance of acceptable taxation, most people consider themselves free even though many are enslaved by debt. We grumble about the 10 to 20% missing from our check to pay the obvious taxes, but we do nothing about it. However, if the real amount of up to 64% was taken out all at once and we were left with only 36% of our income, there would be an immediate uprising against our government. As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said "None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free."
Laws and Regulations
Instead of simply punishing those who harm others, the entire population is oppressed with laws and regulations that are designed for the exception rather than the rule. Every year thousands of them are passed at Federal, State, County and City levels that control every aspect of our lives and infringe on our right to live free. Many of these laws are said to be for our safety, security, or well-being, but they have nothing to do with protecting the rights of the people. These laws and regulations pile up year after year, rarely expire, and eventually make criminals out of good citizens. Furthermore, legislation like the Patriot Act and the issuance of Executive Orders that give outright power to the President, openly violate the Constitution and strip us of our freedoms.
Unknown to most people, Presidential Directives like NSPD-51 and HSPD-20 that are issued by the President, give him dictatorial power upon his sole determination and declaration of a “catastrophic emergency.” They include broad definitions and lack Congressional oversight that is suppose to protect the people. All of this is done without regard for the Constitution, and is hardly the workings of a free society.
If the definition of freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think freely, then we are losing it to these totalitarian measures. Early in the 20th century, Americans forgot the true meaning of freedom and now accept an alternate definition given to them by select leaders. People now consent to laws being passed that take away their liberties and right to privacy, while believing it will help preserve their freedom. This type of Orwellian Doublethink has become common and is rarely ever challenged.
Our freedom is not a gift from the government with terms and conditions. It is our natural right, and it was bequeathed to us by our forefathers long ago through a bloody struggle. Thomas Paine, the catalyst for the American Revolution, said “It is the duty of the patriot to protect his country from his government.”
Does the permit
come with training on how to have a proper camp fire? At $50 they should include training.
thank god.....
we have government to protect us. Can you imagine the chaos and suffering in a world without shameless bureaucrats? Why people would be free to just do whatever they want on their own property! No, no, we need these people to manage us so that we don't screw things up ourselves. Obviously they are far more competent and reasonable....
someone told me
that there were over 60,000,000 laws on the books.
I would love to see those that say "WE NEED A LAW" attempt to read and understand all the ones we currently have.
You have to have a permit
to change out a toilet.
WITH FREEDOM COMES RESPONSIBILITY!!
And also permission to have
And also permission to have hot water in your house...
Does This Mean I Can't Light A Wooden Matchstick?
In my county, I think they recently banned all wood fires outright. No burning wood, period.
Does that also cover people
Does that also cover people who heat their homes with a wood burning fireplace?
YES, john2k
Homes constructed with wood-burning fireplaces have been banned for some years now -- in my region of the county, all new houses built since 2002 (perhaps even 2000) are allowed to have only gas fireplaces by mandate.
Do I need to mention that I live in California?
The fireplace in my house is sealed with glass, so I can't even open it up to get to the faux logs if I wanted to, without using tools or damaging its frontispiece.
This is quite a shocker. I
This is quite a shocker. I honestly believed that you were going to say fireplaces inside homes are fine. I cannot understand any government banning fireplaces nor total bans on wood burning.
And therein lies one of the major problems...
So many people in this country are so (if you'll excuse the expression) ignorant of just how out-of-control government has become - fed, state AND local. They usually refuse to believe it, until it slaps THEM personally upside the head. If only there was an easier way to wake people up.....

We ignore county laws
We ignore county laws because it's our property.
If there is a fire hazard, you don't want to set a fire that might potentially damage your property and others, that's being a good neighbor. But if there is no hazard and you take the needed precautions, light up.
So many fees, permits and
So many fees, permits and having to get permission to do something on YOUR property. People have been put down for so long that they just submit willfully to the government. Our founding fathers would launch an immediate revolution if they came back and saw what was happening. The level of British tyranny does not hold a candle to the tyranny we live under today.
And that's what you do. If they try to come on your property, you demand to see their search warrant. If they don't show one, you don't open the door or comply. Of course the official might taser (torture) you for your non-compliance against his high authority.

He wants fees for what people use from the government - such as roads, etc. The gas tax can be considered a user fee, for example.

Nothing happens. 30 million people already don't pay taxes.
Over 20 million of them are illegal aliens for starters.
Put 30,000,000 in prison? Piece of cake.
30 million American cow people would walk into prison camps if they got an official postcard telling them to do so. 12 years of government indoctrination wasn't for nothing, you know.
The government would just have us prisoners put up a fence and tell us prisoners to dig latrines.
Two million were displaced by Katrina, plus two million more in prison already. Imprison them in a Superdome and let predatory gangs go to work establishing order. That's the model.
Pay for it? They've already got 30 million on welfare of one kind or another.
No problem. USA! USA!

You mean where is the government told clearly NOT to do it? The Second Amendment. It's a cut-and-dried violation of the Constitution--it shouldn't be legal to regulate firearms at all.
Yet because the individual fears the government, rather than the other way around, it is deemed legal and proper. Governments can essentially pass any unconstitutional law and do anything they please, purely on the basis of the fact that the people fear them.

I was reading about New
I was reading about New Hampshire gun laws the other day. It seems that NH does not require registration, license or permit. There are some minor exceptions such as concealed carry, etc. But generally, it seems that in NH your ownership of a gun in none of the states business. Federal laws still apply, though.
A friend who lives in NH told me a few years back that the states has the point of view being how can they give permission (permit) for something which is your constitutional right.
Anyhow, it's good to know that at least some states still respect the constitution and the rights of the people.
I ride my 4 wheeler
On the streets and rode by a cop the other day... I was like 6 feet from him but he was writing a ticket. Of course my 3 year old had a helmet and eye protection along with other gear. I ignored the cop and he ignored me. It gives me a great feeling to commit non-crimes on streets that my gas tax pays for.
I too use the i don't notice you tactic to the police.
I have to say it works 90% of the time even if I am speeding. Never make eye contact with them, stay cool, and go about your business. It took me a while to figure this out. When I was younger every time I looked at the cop and he seen me I would be pulled over, no matter even if it was just form alittle harasment. Atleast is seems to work for me.
FREEDOM CONTINGENT UPON
FREEDOM CONTINGENT UPON COMPLIANCE IS NOT FREEDOM!
I turned some people on to Ron Paul on this issue.
Nobody around here wants to change anything in their backyards. It is widely known that if you want to build or just change something in your backyard that the city will inspect the entire property and fine you for almost anything. It's ridiculous. You pay all these property taxes and can't do what you want on your own property. I'm not talking about safety issues. I'm talking about building a shed within 5 feet of the neighbors property, having a septic tank too close to one thing or another, putting in a patio not exactly to specifications, or even laying down stone.
One elderly man wanted to put up a 10 ft. x 20 ft. fence to block out the neighbors driveway from his giant window. The harassment that elderly man got was shameful. He ended up being fined $800.00 for other things wrong on his property. He had to get letters from his neighbors saying it was okay for the patio that he has had for 30 years to remain in place since it was within 3 feet of the neighbors property instead of 5 feet. He never did put up that fence, but he and his wife voted for Ron Paul. I thought about sitting outside the court room that fines people for property issues and passing out Ron Paul information every month.
Wouldn't his patio be
Wouldn't his patio be covered under a grandfather clause of some type because of the length of time it had been there? I suppose next if you go to a lumber/hardware store in the near future to buy lumber you will have to have your building permit in hand before they will "allow" you to purchase anything. About 4 years ago I decided to convert a small carport into a storage shed. I "forgot" to get a permit (duh). But no one showed up so I guess I escaped prosecution so far. lol
The patio was there when he bought the house.
He argued with them. They told him that when he bought the house he became responsible for it.
Bottom line: They can
Bottom line: They can enforce any B.S. they wish, logical, legal, or otherwise, because they are the Government, and he is Not.

Get some bricks.
Put a circle of bricks on the ground, put down some sand, and it's not a campfire anymore. It's an outdoor fire pit.
If anyone wants to come on your property and inspect it, tell them to go get a warrant.
-jcr
I probably should have been
I probably should have been more specific about it. It actually was a fire pit. We build the fire like a campfire, but it is setup as a fire pit and is surrounded by cinder blocks.
This is a good point, though, and I will need to look further into the exact specifications of whatever law/ordinance/etc that covers this issue.
It's been my experience
It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission.
You can do anything you want!!!
You just have to pay $300, fill out a 15 page form, undergo a security check, apply for a licence and wait 3 months.....

There are so many stupid and contradictory laws on the books that even if you don't try, you're probably gonna violate at least ten every day!
hey jersey sucks doesnt it
freedumb is not free! my neighbor recently cut down 15 trees on his property and guess what you need a permit to do that.he was fined 30 bucks for each tree he cut down. jersey taxes the shit out of us and when we sell our homes to move out of state they charge you a tax for leaving just to kick you in the ass on the way out the door
