honestly

~peace
i am quite pleased with what is going on as this is how the sleeping sheep will finally wake up- take away their food, and what will they do while watching the tube??? i am not saying i want people to go hungry, but isn't a portion of the world already starving, and yet the sheeples keep on keeping on about thier business. maybe when things get a little worse, there will finally be questions to which they will look for answers and we all know where the answers are! get ready people 'cause the rest of 2008 is gonna be rocky. just my opinion.

Several good things about

Several good things about this:

(1) Maybe Americans in general will realize the economy is in dire straits at last;

(2) Maybe American women will worry less about the size of their waistlines in an impending famine, and worry more about self-reliance;

(3) Maybe American men will get off their rears and learn to hunt and fish the way their ancestors did;

(4) Maybe Americans in general will start planting vegetable gardens in their off time, instead of watching the mindless crap on TV.

(Not holding my breath for this to happen yet, though...)

Before I even read this

Before I even look at this report I am going to assume the media blames bio-fuels for helping to create the problem.

What does this mean?

Please inform me of what this bill means. Does it mean more government control of the food supply?

what i found interesting...

is more tax subsidies for ethanol production. this will drive food prices higher.

Prudence

We purchase "old fashioned" store label oatmeal in the 42 oz. cartons from Walmart for abour $1.85. Other grocery stores have been charging about thirty cents more. For the last two weeks, Walmart has been out of that product and it is now over $3 in other stores.

We have always had a better stocked pantry than most people. To prevent canned food from getting outdated we have a procedure. As soon as cans are unbagged at home, a handy grease pencil is used to mark the month e.g. "4/08" on the lid. When put in the pantry, the can is rotated to the back.

I have a concern that survivalist concerns will waste food. It is prudent to have food on hand but if it is discarded four years later because it smells rancid, it is a waste of food in a world where others could have used it. A clean plate principle should be invoked on food purchases.

just like Silver and gold...

just like Silver and gold... buy what you need now! 31 food riots threw out the world.. countries not exporting rice and wheat... now its showing up here in the USA.. and when i'm talking buying i'm not talking enough for a few months... buy enough food for every person in your home for ATLEAST
1 year or more if you can! food is as important of a purchase as silver/gold. and Defense.

No lack of food yet here I agree, but definetly a rise in prices

Stocking up on food is a good idea, at the very least you are fighting inflation from the falling dollar. What you buy today will cost more in the future.

Well no wonder there's a food shortage

by reading the responses here; You all are buying up the f*ck*ng food!

My husband and I have no more work

after 2 weeks, and you can bet I am stocking up on food, unless you very kindly will send some money to buy some? We have religious objections to food stamps, etc. So, what would you do???

Lynn, I hope you are joking? Because---

Accusing people of "hoarding" will be one of the tactics used to cause dis-ruption and the "need" for martial law!
In the early 70's, I had bought a case of jar lids at a warehouse market, and lo and behold, later that year jar lids were"rationed" and news media blamed those of us who were "hoarding jar lids"! Of course I shared my jar lids with friends who canned fruit and veggies. But even my "friends" looked at me like I had done something wrong because I had a supply of Jar Lids! Think About It!!!

Just an obvious observation (and being a bit sarcastic),

it was just my first thought when I read that there were some here buying 250 lbs of rice and beans.

One person here wrote something to the effect of, "I felt bad that I only left 2 bags of rice on the shelf." Well, sometimes our conscience dictates moral and ethical values that are God given. Maybe that person should look at why they felt that way.

the reason for the silver shortage.

yea, and I think I squeaked a bit :)

Here

No shortage here yet at Costco (Portland, Oregon). I bought today, but this might get scary!!!
I am stocking up with at least 6 months supply of everything.

Although you should

Although you should definitely be storing food, much of the media attention to food shortages (at this writing) is hogwash propaganda intended to scare the public away from bio-fuels.

That doesn't mean there won't be a real famine down the road, but there's still plenty of time for preparation. Start planting and storing water now.

Frankly, (and I hate to say

Frankly, (and I hate to say it in this thread but I have been quiet long enough) this whole thing, tho maybe needed, smacks to me of another way the government is trying to get us consumerizing through the back door. We spend MUCH more than normal on food, toilet paper, ammunition and other goods, because we want to save money later and have supplies. This makes a huge surge in what we spend. Then they can see how well they are doing at stimulating the economy. I spent some extra, but I would rather starve a little (none of my neighbors would let any of us STARVE) than give this country an economic jolt they can use to their own advantage when we are really slipping away like sand in a sieve.

well

I do think the ethanol subsidy is a seriously bad idea. Bio-fuel is a good area of research, but as always, government intervention in the market just creates more problems.

Agreed, I think ethanol is

Agreed, I think ethanol is overrated, anyway. The real biofuel of choice is veggie diesel.

SUPPLIES

Hey Lisa C. how did that list of supplies work out for you ?

To answer other questions about long term storage I understand people are using 5 gallon food buckets ( food grade ) , mylar bags , and filling from the bottom up with Co2 or nitrogen tanks and using a copper tube to push all the way to the bottom of the bucket which intern displaces oxygen and then placing lids on the buckets. If my memory serves me I think I remember some of this information at http://waltonfeed.com/

Free 3 and 5 gallon buckets

You can get free icing buckets from bakeries and the bakery section of supermarkets. We use Gamma Seals for the lids. The rim part of the seal snaps on to the bucket ( we have to use a rubber mallet), and the lid spins on to that. Super easy.

Would placing a chunk of dry ice at the bottom of the bucket of grain also work to dispel the oxygen?

P.S. The free square icing buckets are perfect for hydroponics--for larger plants like tomatoes.

Dry ice

Yes Carrot Top ! I understand that using dry ice works also but you would wrap the dry ice in cheese cloth so you don't burn your product. GOOD CALL on getting buckets from supermarkets and local eatery's !

Working on it as we "speak"

You recommended the pressure cooker, didn't you?

I love my pressure cooker. Wish I would have had it years ago -- will never cook beans again without it.

no lack of food here...

in Illinois... where do you get your information?

If you get bags of wheat,

If you get bags of wheat, rice, beans, etc. what is the best way to store them? And how about for a basement?

It can be stored

several ways. In buckets is best. If you mix it with food grade diatomaceous earth then any bugs that are in the wheat will be killed and won't be able to thrive on your wheat.

If you don't have a grinder and wish to try storing wheat, you can freeze it at 0 degrees in a deep freeze for 4 hours and then put it in black trash bags and it should be alright for up to a year.

you can find a lot of storage ideas at www.endtimesreport.com

and

http://www.millennium-ark...

Not wheat!

Wheat is a mess to handle. Plus it has to be milled into flour to be useful. Unless you have a mill, forget it. Rice, beans, lentils are all storable and OK. The price of rice has jumped but Chinese markets still sell big bags (25lb) of white rice. Not the best, but it's still cheap. Brown rice is 3x the price.

Can't help you with storage info, but check the web.

Oh yes, wheat! Wheat, if

Oh yes, wheat! Wheat, if stored properly, has an indefinite storage life. Not the case with corn, beans, rice, or lentils, which all gradually deteriorate into dust.

Wheat also can be eaten without being ground into flour. It can be sprouted in water or cracked and eaten whole.

Hard red winter wheat should be the cornerstone of your food storage plan.

all you have to do is buy it

all you have to do is buy it in nitrogen packed buckets.. keep it cool like in the basement and it should last decades!

as for me and my home, we shall worship the LORD

I bought a vacuum sealer and been sealing 2lbs at a time

and keeping them in darkness. Hopefully will keep for a while.

I was wondering

about the vacuum sealing, no air...why wouldn't that work?

It only works for a while.

Roughly doubles storage time -- even longer if things are kept sealed and frozen.

I think it's because of other factors -- heat and light being the big two. I would suspect it keeps longer and the company is just covering their butt.

Can foods like green beans

Can foods like green beans should be fine for a while.

Canned foods

Have to be careful with cans. I was making sauerkraut last week and needed 5 cans of kraut. 4 of the cans were fine. The 5th can was not. The good Lord must have been looking out for me because I opened the bottom of the can instead of the top. Before I opened it, I noticed a black speck on it. I picked it off and it left a hole. The kraut was bad. I'm buying kraut in jars from now on.

Depends on the quality of the cans.

Some Asian cans aren't of the best quality. Have a look at the inside, is there a lining or not and is well-made.

Don't know much more than that.

the times , they are a changing

it was just a few months ago i posted here on the subject of food storage and need to put in gardens and back then i got a lot ,A LOT of flack from readers claiming i was being sensationalistic and trying to scare people...lately i notice these threads have almost become matter of fact as more people are waking up to the trouble we are really in.....real wake up call isnt it ?

Sorry, never heard of you before.

hmm ,,,didnt you get into bitch slaaping contest with another memeber here a week or two ago?

Nope

Not me, life is to short for that stuff if I am in the wrong i will apologize or try to understand another persons view. I am just happy people are starting to understand what is going on with the state of affairs in this country. Good to see people are stocking up on necessities to get through eventualities.

Supplies

Good morning LIsa C. I don't know if this was a reply to my question but I was the one that sent that giant list from Backwoods living magazine on what a family of five would need for a year to survive. You had trouble getting the link so I shortened it up and sent the list back to you, it was on the " Rice & Beans post ".
Why I was asking was because I found that to be a great list and brought up a lot of things I would have over looked. Just wanted to get your thoughts on it, Thanks !

never from me either.. i

never from me either.. i knew this was coming.. and its nots from using corn to make ethanol... its from governments screwing it up!

as for me and my home, we shall worship the LORD

You never got that from me...

in fact my hubby, and I started a great garden, and are already reaping the benefits. We have also spread the message of Peace, Prosperity, Freedom, and Liberty, but I will say while spreading that message some have said the economy was fine, and the USA will be fine. I must say to those that we have warned about some of the not so great things to come, who have said my hubby and I are nuts, well, they will not be welcomed to our supplies, and preparedness because they failed to plan, and were forewarned. I commend you on your previous post, and took heed to what you have posted. My husband, and I will be prepared, and we will provide for our children, and like-minded friends, especially those Ron Paul Supporters that have endured this corruption, and greed that our government has given us to deal with.

also reported a story today about limiting, not only rice but other products as well. Shoppers were only allowed what they usually buy in that quantity.
and had to have some history...anybody have more information?

Whatever

I'm just glad that I'm a vaginatarian.
