Lincoln 1860 - Paul 2008

I have read several posts here which mention Abraham Lincoln's run for nomination in 1860. I find it rather comical that some people here are so appalled at the idea that Paul supporters might force a brokered convention at the RNC in September. "Honest" Abe's contingent actually manufactured counterfeit tickets to get the nomination in 1860.

Throughout the history of the United States the political process, for good or ill, has been used to bring about change. Our founders intended this process to displace the practice of war to bring about ideological change. Party politics is a battle in which the exchange of ideas replaces arms as a means of revolution. Even before the American Revolution, the weapons of words, clashed long before the muskets began to flash.

Patrick Henry said:
"Shall we try argument? Sir, we have been trying that for the last ten years. Have we anything new to offer upon the subject? Nothing. We have held the subject up in every light of which it is capable; but it has been all in vain. Shall we resort to entreaty and humble supplication? What terms shall we find which have not been already exhausted? Let us not, I beseech you, sir, deceive ourselves. Sir, we have done everything that could be done to avert the storm which is now coming on. We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne, and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of the ministry and Parliament. Our petitions have been slighted; our remonstrances have produced additional violence and insult; our supplications have been disregarded; and we have been spurned, with contempt, from the foot of the throne! In vain, after these things, may we indulge the fond hope of peace and reconciliation. There is no longer any room for hope. If we wish to be free-- if we mean to preserve inviolate those inestimable privileges for which we have been so long contending--if we mean not basely to abandon the noble struggle in which we have been so long engaged, and which we have pledged ourselves never to abandon until the glorious object of our contest shall be obtained--we must fight! I repeat it, sir, we must fight!".

Our founders set the system up so that we would not have to sacrifice our sons and daughters to defend against tyranny. Instead they gave us a system to wrest our nation back from the clutches of tyranny. However we have been simpering and dancing around while our nation is being slowly swallowed whole by socialism/communism(the twin sisters of tyranny). Now we are either going to get out and fight the battle of words, and vote our conciences or we are going to live under the despotic rule of those who want the power of the greatest nation on the face of the planet.

Thomas Jefferson said, ""Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God."

He also said, "When patience has begotten false estimates of its motives, when wrongs are pressed because it is believed they will be borne, resistance becomes morality."

Oh, we are such a weak kneed lily-livered nation who stand under the thumb of a government that makes the Britain of the Colonial period look like a servant of the colonists! Our Tories run rampant, but as Thomas Paine points out, "Every Tory is a coward; for servile, slavish, self-interested fear is the foundation of Toryism; and a man(or woman to update) under such influence, though he may be cruel, never can be brave."

However, the cowards cannot win this day, even as they could not in Thomas Paine's day. We must press on in the fight. Why? Because America may not survive until we have the cajones to stand on the front lines. America IMHO cannot endure any one of the Three Stooges. Therefore TODAY is the day we must face the battle for tomorrow we may be over-run! A brokered convention is musket we have at our disposal to save the RNC, and consequently the United States at large. We must pick up our musket, and head to the battlefield of ideas.
For Thomas Paine was right when he said, "THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value."
