The government TWIC program

The government TWIC program...
On April 30th, 2008 jrb112476 says:

I work for an engineering firm here in Baton Rouge,LA and we were just informed that we would be having to go through the TWIC program. What is the TWIC program?? The Transportation Worker Identification Credential program will ensure individuals who pose a threat do not gain unescorted access to secure areas of the nation's maritime transportation system. TWICs are tamper-resistant biometric credentials that will be issued to workers who require unescorted access to secure areas of ports, vessels, outer continental shelf facilities and all credentialed merchant mariners. It is anticipated that more than 750,000 workers including longshoremen, truckers, port employees and others will be required to obtain a TWIC. The TWIC will be a Smart Card (i.e., a card with a small integrated circuit chip embedded in the card) and will contain the following technologies:

* Dual Interface Integrated Circuit Chips (ICC) - a small computer chip that can be read by either inserting the card in a slot in a "contact" card reader; or, holding the card within 10 centimeters of a "contactless" card reader
* Magnetic Stripe - commonly found on the back of credit cards; read by "swiping" the card through a magnetic stripe card reader
* Linear Bar Code - commonly used to quickly identify items by scanning the codes with an optical reader—i.e. scanning grocery items at a checkout counter

What are the permanent disqualifying criminal offenses?

Per 1572.103(a):
(1) Espionage or conspiracy to commit espionage
(2) Sedition or conspiracy to commit sedition
(3) Treason or conspiracy to commit treason
(4) A federal crime of terrorism (18 U.S.C. 2332(g)) or comparable State law

What the hell can I do about this?? I can see how the government is going about forcing EVERYONE to get a real id card. They will just do it through your employer that way if you dont go along with it, you dont have a job. My beef with it is that every plant I go to already does a background check on you and gives you an id card to get into their particular plant. Why do we have to go through this?? Anyone with any info on how I can fight this would be greatly appreciated.

Im trying to...

figure things out. The only thing I can think of is to call the ACLU. They know more about this kind of stuff than I do. I will also be calling Alex Jones this Friday. If any of you can call him before then and let him know about this, I would appreciate it. Problem with this is NO ONE at my work is even remotely concerned with this. I am the only one questioning it. Am I the one that is crazy?? Sometimes I feel like it.

I do not know. It sounds

I do not know. It sounds like time for Civil Disobedience. It is not fair to force existing workers through a federal program. You need to unite and protest it. I would hate for ALL of you to lose your jobs over it, but it may not really be a fireable offense. You all need to DO something.

You commie pinko

the last line in the communist manifesto is:

WORKING MEN OF ALL COUNTRIES, UNITE!

Forming a union and fighting the employer does not work... it is part and parcel of the communist mentality....

QUIT WORKING FOR COMMUNIST CORPORATIONS

Coroporations are...

creatures of the state and therefore can be "regulated" by their creator.

When the state controls the means of production it's called COMMUNISM. Read the Communist Manifesto. This whole employer / employee thing is communist.

QUIT and work for yourself... the time is coming when everyone will have to make a decision... Be free or be a state slave..... Why not be on the cutting edge and become a free man now?

I *DO*...

work for myself. I cannot be fired by the customer, they will simply choose to use someobdy else to do the job that has the TWIC card. To be honest, as much as I hate the TWIC, I'm not about to give up a great paying opportunity to have fun on the oil rig. Plus, I have 4 young children to try to keep out of government schools...

I totally agree...

and that is what is so sad. I just got married, got a new house, etc. I CANT afford to quit my job.

and on top of that...

it costs about $140. Hope your employer will pay for it. I am the employer, so it comes out of my pocket. The client (BP, Chevron, etc.) will not pay for it.

my firm

is paying for it, but I question why more engineering firms and other firms are not protesting this. So far the only plants requesting it is Marathon and ExxonMobil...imagine that, the big oil gurus

BP...

is making sure that we have ours, they're really the only ones so far and we work for Chevron and Shell, among a few others.

Me too...

I posted about this a couple of weeks ago, will dig up the thread if needed. I work offshore as a paleontologist and am not about to give up my job! It sucks big time, this is just the first sneaky step toward nat'l ID. Next they'll have other corporations making it a contingency to work there, so people will have to either work and get the ID or not work.

This basically is

a national ID card. And you are right, it is going to trickle down to every type of occupation. My wife is a pediatric nurse at a hospital here and I wouldn't be surprised if the health care industry is next. I have been thinking about calling the ACLU about this. I will definitely be calling Alex Jones about it.

keep us posted....

We're being pressured to get the card quickly because it takes 2 months to process. You have to find a participating Coast Guard facility, go there, fill out forms and get digital pic taken. Then go BACK and get it in 2 months. No mailing of cards.

Bastards...

I don't know anything about this.

It is probably better to repost this thread at night when more people are on, you will have a better shot at some answers. I would probably leave that card at work in a locker if you have to keep the job. Personally, I would look for alternative employment if at all possible. Good luck, we will all face this dilemma soon.

Thanks....

Yeah, I didn't know anything about it either. After researching it, it turns out this has been in planning since like 2002. This is very depressing, but I will repost it tonight. Thanks again!!

Anyone??

....

Short of getting another job,

I just don't know.

Recently a young man, who worked on an offshore oil rig posted the same dilemma. Basically, the answers were all similar to what I've just posted.

They are going to get us coming and going and I don't see how to get around it.

One thing you can do, is check to see if there is a law in your state which says, once you are hired, they cannot make you do anything with the threat of losing your job if you don't comply.

Perhaps you can find a good labor lawyer for you and like minded workers and friends.

Civil liberties arguement...

would that stand??
