TV Converter Box Coupon Program WTF?!

Someone in my office just handed me this flier, and i checked the site: https://www.dtv2009.gov/
Why is the goverment paying people $40 EACH to buy a converter to have more disinformation spewed into fellow Americans homes?!?

They are switching broadcast from analog to digital. I believe with digital they would be able to use fewer frequencies by having numerous broadcasts per frequency, each with their own digital signature.

The funding for these boxes is provided by the television industry, who has paid hundreds of millions in license fees for the new digital TV spectrum. It is specifically not a government funded program.

This whole HDTV thing just smacks of "Five Year Plans" and "Great Leaps Forward."

Remember the term "the people airwaves" ..
Well forget that.
What the miltary doesnt take gets auctioned off and what they gave us in return was these crummy boxes :).
Many can't afford a new digital TV
The converter box allows you to watch over-the-air local TV stations, using a standard "analog" TV set. Not sure if you knew this, or refering to something else, but that's what I know of it. New TV's use a digital ATSC tuner now.
