Presidential hopeful Ron Paul thinks Barack Obama will win White House

Libertarian Republican Congressman from Texas speaks about his non-interventionist foreign policy at Goucher as part of the President's Forum

Lori Shull
5/2/08

Flags, signs, bumper stickers and buttons were distributed to the crowd, who were ready to make a sensation in support of their favorite political candidate, Congressman Ron Paul (R-Texas). When the long-shot contender for the Republican presidential ticket showed up to speak at Goucher as part of the President's Forum, Kraushaar Auditorium didn't even have standing room left.

They gave him a standing ovation before he even opened his mouth, and clapped during his speech more than 20 times.

And then, after listening to his libertarian ideas for over an hour, they heard him say Democratic-hopeful Barack Obama would win the rat race to the White House.

The rest of the talk, which was not written down, was a fairly run-of-the-mill campaign stump speech. Though running for the Republican nomination, he distanced himself from the party and its contemporary hawkish ways.

"The sad part is… if you don't support it - vote against the PATRIOT Act, you're unpatriotic. You vote against the war, you vote against the troops," he said. "They turn it and twist it around. I have come to the firm conclusion that you can be conservative, libertarian, institutionalist - a good American and vote against the war and still be a patriot."

His focus was on his non-interventionist foreign policy stance. He said the nation needs to focus on issues within its own borders and get out of other places - Iraq and the Middle East but also Korea, Japan and Germany.

"All empires end for financial reasons," he said. "The Soviet Union… bankrupted themselves and one place where they really bankrupted themselves was their fruitless efforts in Afghanistan - you'd think we'd learn a lesson or two."

The crowd was very receptive to Paul's ideas - it interrupted him many times to applaud and every once in a while, a couple people standing in the back were seen waving full-size American flags.

Among the hundreds of people there were students, middle aged parents with their young children and older people.

Paul, however, is not the politician most Goucher students endorse. Many were there out of curiosity to hear what he would have to say, and what his supporters would do.
"I told my mom I was coming to see him and she was like 'Oh my God, that's the lunatic fringe!'" senior international relations major Lindsey Rich said.

Others were thrilled that he was coming. Before Paul came on stage, sophomore Emily Adams introduced him to the crowd. Adams is one of Paul's more vocal supporters on campus and was asked by college president Sanford J. Ungar to introduce him at the event.

Paul's speech lasted a little less than 40 minutes and ended with another standing ovation. After the speech, about 30 people raced to get in line behind microphones to ask questions of the presidential hopeful. This was the first time there was any sign that not all members of the crowd supported him.

Questions about abortion and women's rights drew applause in favor of the students who asked, rather than the answers the Congressman gave. Though Paul is pro-life, he said he objected to the federal government's involvement in the issue at all.

One of the themes of his speech was getting the federal government out of more issues. He wants to return to the text that is in the Constitution, rather than the big government he thinks we currently have. Though current American foreign policy, he says, is what convinced him to run for president again after his failed effort in 1988, individual liberties are what matter most.

"The big issue for me is individual liberty," he said. "I believe that's what's been neglected in this country for a hundred years plus. I believe the Founders understood this issue, understood what limited government is all about and gave us a pretty darn good Constitution which unfortunately we have ignored."

"We need more production, we need sound money, we need less taxes, we need a sensible foreign policy and [a new system] emphasizing personal liberty where creative energy would be released not suppressed."

LOL

Your headline is "spinning." lol.

Let's prove him wrong.

Let's prove him wrong. Let's make sure he wins the White House!

Excuse me !!

Key word rat , rat race. Ron Paul is not in the rat race for the White House. Time for a full court press. This did not need to be posted as the head lines were meant to be divisive.

For you doubters ..........

.............. Ron Paul said it again on CNN's Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.

When asked if he had to pick one of the three left, who would it be and he said Obama.

Watch the video here: http://www.presidentronpa...

“I have joined your revolution and I’m proud to be part of what you want to do.” - Ron Paul

yea

It sounds like more than anything a small publication such as itself is trying to make a story. Journalists do it often by wording their words just right. When all it sounds like is the good Dr. doing a little pandering to the crowd, of what sounds like a liberal arts college of sorts.

He must be getting tired

"I do not want to try to guess how this whole thing will play out." That is not dodging the question, and is still honest, and does not plug my email with people demanding to know why they should bother to vote for Ron Paul if he has "given up."

I live in Idaho, our populace is SICK of having our vote not count, SICK of being the "reddest red state" and still run by liberal policy makers, and when Mitt dropped out, it was ALL RON PAUL. Then came the video everyone thought was him dropping out, then a couple blunders by Jesse Benton. Now this, from the "horse's mouth." These comments are going to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. It could have been, people, I am not kidding. But I cannot campaign against Ron Paul and hope to win Idaho for Ron Paul. If he insists on ceeding the election on a weekly basis, WTF am I doing trying to become a delegate? Worse, why am I talking other people into it?
If the party is over, is it time to go home? Go ahead and flag me, ban me, call me a troll but I have been to hundreds of doors, made thousands of phone calls and turned my heat to 50 all winter so I could send a thousand dollars to the campaign. I work on this effort every waking hour - unitl I crack from the insensitive garbage my fellow supporters hurl at me and I have to take a day off. But then, next day I am back at it again. Honestly, is he trying to rally the troops or get us to give up? I have a primary in less than a month. He will not come here to campaign, the one stop for ONE speech with no other events was all the effort they will put into Idaho. FRIGGIN' IDAHO! No book signing, no meet and greet with his supporters, no photo-ops with local politicians. I arranged an ENDORSEMENT from our state's favorite candidate - that was igorned that completely. Everything I asked to do I in conjuction with this event got ix-nayed, and now all the local supporters STILL call daily to ask why I didn't do this or why I did do that. We raised ZERO dollars - nadda. Now I am supposed to try to advertise for him with no money, and apparently no committment from the candidate any more. 2 days here campaigning, like a real candidate who wanted our vote, Idhao would be his. Period. It would be "John Who?"
VERY, VERY frustrating.

i know it doesn't mean much,

but i'm glad to have people like paul4won on my time. i met a few people from Idaho during my time in the army. one is now probably my best friend even though i haven't seen him in a year. you guys up there are cut from a different cloth. one that i wish would find it's way to Indiana.

i agree with you that the video left doubts in even my head. my buddy from Sandpoint didn't know what to make of it either. to this day i'm still running into Paul supporters who thought he'd dropped out after seeing that video.

i will tell you this. don't give up on him visiting your state. our primary is Tuesday and we just found out he'll be here Monday a few days ago. so there is hope. although it would be nice to have time to organize a large welcoming

No One Ever Said

No one ever said that Ron Paul is a good politician. He's a good statesman. He's not power-driven. He doesn't like to mislead by sounding more optimistic than he feels. He's certainly not perfect.

I'm in California, and I understand your frustration; we were never going to capture this state without old media participation, so the hard work seemed like a drop in the bucket.

I'll bet no other campaign gets as many calls and e-mails from supporters as his does, and I wonder if calls get lost or buried. It's frustrating.

He does have excellent karma. He keeps beating the odds, anyway.

Thank you for your hard work. Good luck.

what?

Is he going to be on Oprah? I don't understand your statement here.

if we can get Paul the GOP nomination...

he'll run circles around either Obama or Hillary during a one-on-one debate. all their bs will be exposed when Dr. Paul presents nothing but the truth.

You are 100% correct!!!

You are 100% correct!!!

Where Does He Mention Obama?

I read the whole article ... I used the handy Find feature in Safari and found nothing about Obama. If I were a betting man, I would bet Obama winds up in the White House. I don't have an issue with people making such claims, and it wouldn't surprise me if Dr Paul though he would probably win as well ... but still, did Ron say it? If he did, why isn't it in the article? If he didn't, why is it in the headline?

http://www.youtube.com/pr...

If i were betting

Fortune Favors the Bold

i would say Hillary

But we don't have to think that.

If we get him elected guess what. He'll be wrong. And I would be most happy with the fact that Ron would be wrong in this instance since he very rarely is.

We can all say what needs to be done, but who here led by example today?

More BS, more trolls in da

More BS, more trolls in da house!!!!
Since when does RP make assumptions! He never did and will not so please, let this post dieeeeee!

No troll here ..............

............. read my reply at the bottom. It was confirmed by a Ron Paul supporter who was there and heard the question and Ron Pauls reply.

“I have joined your revolution and I’m proud to be part of what you want to do.” - Ron Paul

Also ...........

Ron Paul also stated

That Oprah should be speaker of the house.....just kidding.......(sarcasm

Shill tactic to defuse our movement

No presidential candidate shoots himself...

?

Where is the proof that Dr. Paul said such a thing? Sounds a like disinformation to me. I think this is made to look good with abit of a spin to it. Show me that I'm wrong.

That is not proof

Just another poster we don't know saying something we never heard.

Interesting...

Razorwind Studios is an official endorser of Ron Paul, and we will live free or die! 14th alternate to MN state!

The title of this article is "Ron Paul says Obama Will Win", but I see that mentioned is only mentioned in one line of the entire article. Does anyone else find that to be odd?

Yes, real odd

With all the amazing direct quotes on what he would do with the state of our country, that is what is picked for the title of the article. It does not sound like something he would say at all with his supporters in the crowd cheering.

WHAT??

Did anyone else hear this? I would like to know.

Yes ...........

............. I posted the article on ronpaulforums and prlgrl responded and said:

I was there. He answered a direct question about who he thought would win the WH. I think he didn't really want to say, but being as honest as he is, came out with.... "well, I never duck a question, so here's what I think..... it's going to be Obama"

RP-Honest to the core.

Gotta love that man!

What someone claims

they heard and what was actually said can be two different things. Why would a presidential candidate say that they believe someone else will win the election? That is absurd. Unless I hear it I won't believe it. How many more people say they heard it?

I am only guessing ...............

............ but maybe the question was posed in this way: 'If you do not win the GOP nominee, who do you think will win the White House?' And Ron Paul answered Barack Obama instead of McInsane, because he knows unless he is the GOP nominee a Democrat is going to win the White House.

As I said, I am only guessing.

Unfortunatly, there are only a couple of videos of the Q&A session posted on youtube and neither of them are the full session.

Keep an eye on the replies to the article on the original thread posted below and we may get more to the bottom of it.
