New Self Reliance & Preparedness Forum
Hi Folks
As we see the blow back from nearly a hundred years of failed monetary policy, foreign policy and stand on the brink of economic melt down. I thought it would be a good idea if we started sharing knowledge and learning how to become more self reliant on a local and regional level. We need to get to know our neighbors and become less dependent on centralized government. That means learning to take care of our needs right here at home and across our own states without relying on federal funds and the strings that come attached to them.
I know we are all busy Campaigning for Ron Paul and ourselves gathering delegates etc. but this is just as important considering the economic circumstances.
To this end I have set up a forum to build into an online community. I will be building a permanent website for this endeavor as I have time ( time whats that?) But I wanted to get the ball rolling and the information flowing.. Please come and visit the site ( link above) sign up and start sharing your knowledge of, and learning how to become more self reliant, and help me build this site up.. Also feel free to give any suggestions for improvements and more forums etc. if there is enough interest we will add them.
Thanks
Blayne
PS:
Some might wonder why I set this up since there are already a number of similar self reliant or preparedness type forums. I have been on some of those forums for over ten years and some are pretty good. However since I have been on Daily Paul I have really been impressed with the caliber of folks here and have felt more at home here then on forums I have been on for many years... Since DP does not have a forum dedicated to Self Reliance I thought I would create one. I hope to attract the same caliber of people there and the level of talent and willingness to live and let live. Nothing is perfect but with your help we can make it the best self reliant forum on the web. Thanks.

Glad you bumped!
I hadn't seen this as it made the rounds before. I'll go check it out! Say, you might ask Martfuncher to post allllllll the comments on the gardening thread over there, and Sierra to post the silver info on your site. Great information from both.
Need a good recipe for sprouted grain bread.
And advice on a good mill for the sprouts.
Thanks.

Self Reliance Forum
Good Forum
I already learned how to make your own fuel - peat.
Hope the forum grows.
sometimes I get the feeling
that Turner Classic Movies are playing movies for our preparation and the schedulers are closet RP supporters. Recently they have played a lot of "political" movies. Last month they ran "A Man For All Seasons". Today I watched a great old movie that made me think of the forum here called Paulville. The movie was "Our Daily Bread" made in 1934. It was VERY GOOD as well as insightful. It was about many people out of work looking for a place to live. A land owner allowed them to build their own community and they all worked together, using their individual talents to create a community. It was eerily ominous. Then, after that movie, was one about the revolutionaries. Didn't get to watch it but, wow, seems like someone over there is in touch with RP and today's challenges.
Bump for the evening crowd

This is great, glad to hear it
I have been doing a lot of self reliant things for many years, and a lot of people come to me for advice. We live a long ways from town, and grow most of our food. We live off the grid, heat and cook with wood, propane refridgerator. I took a 3 year course on herbal medicine and botany when I was in my early 20s, and have been studying it since then too. I grow and pick wild, most of the herbs, and make all our medicines. We have a compost toilet, and built our own home (that is ongoing, very ongoing). We built a wood fired outdoor clay/brick oven for bread baking, which is very handy. Will bake 25 loaves at a time. We are still a long ways to go for total self sufficiency, as we don't have enough solar for our well water, so the gas is getting very expensive for generator for the well. Want a solar system, but probably because of money will go for a rainwater collection, which isn' t as good here, because of only 10 inches of rain a year. Not enough for the garden, but we don't use much water the rest of the year. I have a very part time home business, and rarely have to leave but my husband has to travel a distance sometimes to work in a truck, which uses a lot of diesel. Today, I canned butter because we don't have enough solar for the freezer to work in the spring and summer, and I am putting the extra eggs into storage, dipping in melted lard, and putting with salt in buckets, for winter when they don't lay.
Check out these solar well pumps...
Looks like a $2000 system might be just what you need:

Thanks, now I will drool,
and one other thing for my husband and I to decide the tax stimulus pkg. He seems to think we can't get along without a certain gun. Has to be semiautomatic or something. I figure if they come for us, and we shoot them, they will come back with bigger ones, so silver would be better so we could run. Anyone else have these thoughts? and arguments/discussions?
A nice rifle..
.. can be good for hunting and also defense (especially if several neighbors join in all at once). =P
Could you repeat..
Could you repeat that egg thing at the end...Do they keep like that?

You dip the eggs in melted lard, and put
them in a bucket layering them with salt. Then loosely cover the bucket and put in a root cellar or the coolest place you have that isn't going to freeze. Yes, they keep at least 6 months and up to a year. I learned this from Carla Emery's Old Fashioned Recipe book. You can google eggs and her name and on amazon they have her book, and you can read other ways to store eggs. Better yet, get the book. I just got my copy for 25 cents at our library's book sale.
25 loaves of bread -
Do you freeze it? Sell it?
I'd love to have an outdoor brick oven.
When I make that much
we first make a bunch of pizza, when the oven is very hot, then ready for 25 loaves of bread, and then another 25 loaves of bread. My friends get some, and then I sell them at the local farmer's market for 5.00 a loaf, and now would probably be more. They aren't hard to make, the oven that is. Mostly made of rocks, soil, and some firebricks.
We
We deep-freeze and or just freeze bread here, works fine if its sealed up tight or you'll get freezer burn. Been doin' it for years.
Hehe..
.. was going to ask about that myself. That's alot of bread. ;)
That's awesome! Would you
That's awesome! Would you sign up over at the site and start a thread on herbal medicine? I was going to start one asking what kind of medicinal herbs people grow or get from the wild.
You are just the kind of person we need over there sharing your knowledge because you doing it right now.

Great
That is one reason I set up Chaaps International.
Chaaps is a way for people to connect with others for goods or services without paying barter fees or any fees. If you want to see what we have set up so far: www.chaapsinternational.c...
We have a way to go to get things together but any input would be great.
I look forward with great
I look forward with great interest to seeing all the information that gets posted here, Hawkiye.
One overlooked factor that some people have alluded to in other, similar threads is the building of contacts and networks with others, both those with similar interests and goals far and wide (as here), and also with one's immediate neighbors. For example, just by keeping my eyes open and approaching others in my area, I have a number of neighbors who supply me with raw (goat) milk, fresh home-grown eggs, chicken and honey. I, in turn, supply them with some garden produce and also wild berry jams and jellies that I make and sell on the side. One neighbor does not raise anything, but is an excellent mechanic. These contacts are valuable, and will be invaluable if truly bad times descend on us.
A guy that makes jam!!!! akak---
I am impressed! When I was a kid in Kansas my Dad got some goats and the first time I drank the milk,I almost threw up.But then got used to it and drank it
for years.
True...You wanna hear something weird?
Without any indication on my part of preparing...Two people handed me maps to their houses in the country and told me to "learn" my way to their homes..."In case something happens."
These are people with farms..
Weird' huh?

Girl...You know you wrong..LOL
It's pretty bad...I have to admit..Normally the stuff I list on Ebay (husband is packing it now) should've all ended with bids..Only 1/4 sold...and that was at slashed prices...I did the flea market thing today..Was exhausted after i stayed online late last night...All my Bali stuff moved sooo slow...I only made a couple of hundred standing in the heat...I normally would pull in about four..A little disappointed.
The guy selling rusty frying pans and used rakes did better than me.

eBay..
.. has reported a significant downturn in auction buying and the prices people are getting for their items. Although, sales on the internet generally (non-eBay) are up...
Just emailed you kat.
I think you can see that it's probably good to start off-loading your Balinese items. What will the market be like in 6-12 months?
Maybe start looking at collecting old-fashioned household items? Hand-crank meat/grain grinders, kitchen scales (non-digital), pressure cookers, etc. Useful (non-electric) items that could be worth gold in the future.
Just an idea.

On the flip-side...
I've had co-workers ask me if it was OK if they came out to my property ~If, you know, something odd happens.~
These are not people I talk to about any issues larger than what I like in my coffee.
People are waking up.. ;)
and I bet not one of them
and I bet not one of them has offered to help or said they will give ya some dough to help out .. right?
as for me and my home, we shall worship the LORD
Devon, I hope you said
Devon,
I hope you said no! its funny... i'm the one who can pay all the money to get set up but everyone just wants to come when the shtf! no one wants to help, no one wants to give money for food etc.. they just want to mooch! the only guys coming to my place is an ex navy Seal sniper with combat experience and a good friend of mine who is high up in colorado state patrol.. even some of my family will be told NO!
as for me and my home, we shall worship the LORD
Funny you brought that up..
What we did was set up a house while we making the belowground one, so we technically have an extra house on the property now. I was thinking of some kind of questionnaire for the ~visitors~... and maybe a marksman test...heh.
Sigh
I wish I had some folks like you in my neck of the woods. I can bring a lot to the table, but I'm not located in an ideal area. My family lives a few states up, so that totally sucks. Not interested in being stuck on a highway if SHTF because they will just end up crammed with vehicles that have run out of fuel.
