Congress to Vote on Bill That Will Royally Screw Artists
Sorry guys, couldn't think of a better title for the thread. I'm all in a tizzy, and just wrote my congresscritter about HR 5889.
In short, anyone will be able to take your artwork, be it a photo, painting or poem, and claim it as theirs and make money from it. To prevent this, you will have to register all (past, present, and future) works into new registries this bill will create. This means you will have to pay a fee in order to have your works protected. And apparently, the protection this bill will give to those whose works are registered is shoddy, at best.
This really freaks me out because I recently joined a site called StoryMash where you can publish poems and stories and enter them in contests to win cash prizes. Many of the pieces I have submitted so far I have been working on for YEARS. If this passes, I might just kill myself.
Please, if you value creativity and of course, freedom, write your congresscritters in opposition of this bill! Thank you so much!

Sounds to me as if artists
Sounds to me as if artists want copyright "protection" they must pay the "fee." Sorta seems like the kind of thing organized crime does in selling protection.
In my opinion, this is really all about $$$$$ and nothing to do with improving the protection afforded to artists.
as an art student/artist,
as an art student/artist, this really pisses me off and WILL screw me. I've already written my representatives.... though I doubt they'll vote against it.
So they are no longer supporting your IP?
Good for them. I'm a coder and an artist. I have no problems with someone using ideas that I have published to the public. The only way you can try to stop others from using their imagination and merging it with your ideas is to artificially prop up a system that is doomed to fall anyways, eventually. Art copies fro other art. It always has and it always will.
Once something is in the public eye it is impossible to take back. You chose to put it there. You didn't have to. But then again keeping it to yourself would have made it worthless right? Exactly.
say what?
Im a photographer with a business that sells a product(my photography). Now how can you possibly say someone should be able to up and steal that product and sell it for profit? That's theft! Not only are you advocating an unconstitutional principle, your advocating what is considered a crime in every state.
Has the Writers Guild...
been quiet about this..I will contact them and find out their position...In the meantime..Copyright laws protect you, even without having paid their fee if you can prove the work is yours...
Also, does this include all artists ie. musicians?

Yes, there is a bill now, but not at the time of this blog post
In any case, pay close attention to #2-6. I would also like to point out I would imagine Ron Paul votes for this bill if given the chance.
