My business is tanking due to the economy
I am sitting here right now and writing this after I've only had three customers for the day...and all their purchases were under $10.00...Last year our store was pulling in 10x that...and on Fridays we never had time to stop....
Shopping trends are different as well, as I notice most people simply buy only what they need and no extras...
As a pet retailer, most of my animals would have moved out the store within one week..Now they just sit and I've become the nieghborhood zoo where groups of people wander through, ask a million questions and give me the old "We're just looking" thing while their kids pour coke in my saltwater aquariums or bang on the reptile cages...
Today I was approached at a high school function by several people at different times, who I know ,from just being around...All of them asked me how my business was doing...
At first I took it as kind of a prying question...and was tempted to give them the "Fine." blow off...But being a person who is a terrible liar, I told them the truth...It's slow...Horribly slow..I want to sell and get out..I said with shame.
Everyone of them took a deep sigh and said the same was true for them..Almost like they needed to hear that it wasn't just their world that was being blistered by the economy...Electricians, liquor store owners and a fast food restaurant owners were the ones that slumped their shoulders and almost seemed at a loss..They wren't sure what to do if it kept up this way....All the conversation was the same..and pretty noble I might add..
All were concerned most for their employees before themselves...
They were worried that if it kept up much longer for them, they would have to lay off..I saw the saddness in their eyes over this..
Which made me give them a good hug in the end.
But, I sit here and wonder if the same is true out there..Does anyone on DP own a business? What is it like out there for you?

Anybody reading this...
.. know of types of businesses and work that is seeing more employment and increases in opportunities despite the bad economic environment? I've been reading that energy work (oil and gas related, etc) is on the upswing a bit. And somebody here mentioned the idea of manufacturing something and selling it overseas.
Anything else?
I made a ton selling used mobile homes on terms.
I mean cheap. I bought a $4,000 single-wide and sold it an hour later for $8,000 -- $500 down and $285 a month for 36 months. Much better than the DOW and the person couldn't have been happier to have a home. Need to work with a park manager who will allow you to resell homes this way. Most are happy to help because it ensures the lot rent keeps coming. Good old Lonnie Scruggs is the king and taught me much.
Being a park owner is also a great source of income.
Old-time boarding houses will also come back. What other business occupations for the hard times?
Companies specializing in security fences, window bars, dog breeding/training.
Gun repair and locksmiths
Seamstresses and cobblers
Personal security guards
Beer brewing equipment
Pawn shop owner
Midwives
Barbers (men seeking work keep their hair trimmed)
Seed and Garden Supply
are getting great business !!
;)

this works
freedumb is not free! I work for a small contracting company and what we do is this, we have a small circle of contractors we deal with. We all use each others services as often as possible it kinda keeps work going for everyone. If we could do this on a larger scale it might help us through a recession or depression. i dont know maybe. Its kinda like why home depot puts the hardware stores out . People will go to the depot because they can save a few bucks on an item but if you went to the local hardware store and spent a few bucks the guy from the hardware store would have a few bucks to eat at the local deli and so on. We are working towards lowmcdepotmart
Less calls but...
I have had a lot less phone calls (primary source of everything) however, am getting a lot better quality customers when I do get a call; and yes, it is very slow. Somehow, I know I will make it because my business is set up to weather difficult times.
sorry for you kat
i know that my daughter came home from the mall and said the pet store there was also closing.im in upstate new york which has always had rocky economy until they made fort drum a year round military installation and it is the military and their families that keep the area afloat. everywhere i go im seeing businesses shutting down or on the verge of closing,,it always starts with leisure based businesses and trickles down.also i d say about one in every five houses either up for sale or foreclosed and none of the house are moving . my next door neighbor was a successful realtor and works out of her home, but ive barely seen a customer there since last november.ive been cleaning my house out of unneeded items and having rummage sales which serves two purposes and gives me extra gas money, etc.keep your head up, get to know your neighbors, bring barter back into your life when possible,we all have a long ride ahead of us,,,and PLEASE put some food away...good luck
Thank Alienlve,
and everyone else who gave their support...
Please don't think that we haven't tried almost everything menitoned here..Sales, giveaways, marketing strategies...It just wasn't meant to be...and that's okay...because I don't take it to heart...it's just business...and you have to remain emotionally detached in a sense.and know when it's time to get out..otherwise you'll go down with the ship....
We're putting it up for sale next week..If not, we will fully liquidate and invest in silver and food by July...
Wish me luck.

You don't need luck.
Luck is for people who don't have a clue what to do. You are smart and aware of what's coming. That is why you will come out ahead of most.

Yes, good ole' KFC.
I discovered many years ago, after getting diesel sickness on a boat, that KFC cures tummy problems. I never eat the stuff unless I'm sick.

we clean out foreclosed
we clean out foreclosed homes, so our business should be booming. but too many wannabees have jumped onto the gravy train. they do crap work and have no ethics, and we are slowly getting pushed out of the business. we also have rental houses and most of our tenants are 1000 plus behind, we too are using up our savings.... if it weren't for our Faith in God, I'd really be down
Why are you carrying deadbeat tenants?
I recommend Mr. Landlord for turning rentals back into money makers.

A house lived in
Is often better than an empty house.. at least it will be maintained to some degree.
sometimes it's cheaper to
sometimes it's cheaper to keep them than to evict them. also, my husband says i'm too soft. and friends say i am too human to be a landlord
its not personal...
its business...i think most people understand this
well
i think its about time we remembered these are people same as us,,,this whole world cant always be built on just money and quite frankly when the dollar dies,,,all we will have is one another
I'm sorry -- don't agree.
Tenants who don't pay are forcing you to sacrifice your family for their's. The landlord is being asked to martyr him/herself for the sake of the "poor tenant". This is socialism.
For the financial safety and security of your own family, stop being soft on these tenants and show them the door. They are taking advantage of you.

Small business owners
are the canneries in the mine. Good luck, Read history to find out what businesses did well during the depression. Consider transforming your business accordingly. People continue to want to eat out I thought a soup kitchen would be a good idea. Maybe, not make a lot of money but an opportunity to reach people who are starting to question what is happening to the economy and their country. Peace
Cannaries should be doing well.
I've bought a lot of extra canned goods recently. And I'll be a cannery myself. I received 360 canning lids yesterday that I bought online.
I'd like
Can I please order a small yellow bird in a Mason Jar to go?
Check please!
The Bright Side
I to am starting to feel the aforementioned negative economics. I just wanted to point something out. It kind of came to me when I saw the signature after someones post. It was something to the affect of: "I Freed Thousands of Slaves and could have Freed Thousands of more if they only had known they were slaves." Harriet Tubman.
A lot of people are going to have to check into the "last resort" until they wake up and realize what is happening. I hate to say this but in my view, the worst things get the better Ron Paul's chances are. Pain tends to make people re-evaluate (I hope I'm not underestimating the extent to which people are brainwashed) their own ideas and their lives. Just as markets tend to "correct" so do peoples opinions and attitudes. I think the larger numbers we are looking for to joint this movement aren't necessarily against our ideas but are asleep at the wheel. In my opinion, the Financial suffering that will soon be crossing the threshold into large numbers of American households (it is already at their door step, they just don't realize it) will be the necessary slap in the face that initiates conscientiousness.
I would bet that the chances of Ron Paul supporters being an entrepreneurs/small business owners are probably pretty high. I think we maybe feeling the affects first in some instances because we are on the economic front lines if you will. What I have found is that Dr. Paul is an expert at seeing the big picture and at telling the truth. I think he would suggest that things are going to get a lot worse before they get better. This maybe one of the reasons he is actively campaigning. He always comments that a lot can happen between now and the fall of 2008.
Adjust your lives accordingly, for what is coming. Look at how extended families lived together in the past to shoulder living expenses of home ownership and energy costs. You can substitute the word friends for family in the dynamics of today. Try and get rid of the extra vehicle. Embrace a minimalist life style. Try to become more "agrarian" if you possibly can. I think this is the reality of what we are facing.
If possible, as your living through these painful readjustments, remember that this is the necessary correction we need for large scale political change.
well said...
...be ready!
Manufacturing and exporting is up
I've got help wanted ads out now and although I got 75 qualified responses for an admin assistant, I've gotten no usable responses for motor machinists and assemblers. Americans don't want to get dirty anymore, and the school counselors steer all the smart kids into white collar jobs.
Our motor prices have risen only slightly over here, but the dollar has slid enough that our product is about 25% cheaper to the Europeans than it was 3 years ago. Our $6000 motor in 2005 basically only costs them $4500 now. Shipping costs have not increased as much because the computer is making trucks and ships run fuller more of the time. The internet has made it very easy for the Europeans to find our products too.
My flippant, Yankee Doodle Dandy free advice, worth every penny, is to whittle a product out of something American and figure out how to sell it to the Europeans and the Asians via low cost web advertising or e-mail. Do it without a bunch of snotty nosed chronically late, lying, retard employees because the millstone of government makes it impossible to meet all the regulations, pay all the fees and do all the paperwork.
Do it without a bunch of American employees because, according to Crain's, 85% of them steal, they goof off constantly, they do crap work and they'll sue you for anything. Ruined as useful employees by many poisons. Government warehouses masquerading as schools, Nintendo, Unions, parental abandonment, entitlement programs like unemployment, welfare and subsidized housing.
We have consistently sold to the Western Europeans, but now we are hearing from Serbs and Croats and Bulgarians and Russians and whatever you call someone from Abu Dhabi. A world economy is a great thing because it is a huge market for us. In turn, I buy $2000 in USA parts for every $4500 motor job I send to Belgium.
One of my favorite quotes is from English Prime Minister Winston Churchill, "Americans will do the right thing, after they've tried everything else".
Agreed
Shoe retail has been very tough for years, and the last two years has been devastating. I can see my buying job disappearing in the next 12 months if things don't change soon. (One bright spot might be the Midwest...with commodity prices going up, the farmers will be buying equipment, land, seed, etc, so I think retail still has a shot in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, the Dakotas, Wisconsin. The coasts are dead.) For years I have relaxed by building wooden kayaks and canoes as a hobby. The process is time intensive, making the boats very expensive versus plastic or fiberglass, and thus making them nothing more than eye-candy to most Americans. It has occured to me that Europeans may be more interested in buying beautiful hand-made wooden kayaks from America, especially since the boats would cost about 45% less than they did just 5 years ago (labor is 90% of the price). I've been researching the market. Your post convinces me I'm on to something.
My 30 year career in retail may to come to an end. It looks like manufacturing for the overseas trade could be my second career.

Escrow Officer here, I have not worked since August 07, I am 45 years old and have never been without a job. I went into partnership as VP in a new Title Company, they needed my 18 years of unflawed escrow experience to set up escrow and obtain an escrow license through State Banking. Within one week after getting our license I discovered my partners were unethical and were willing to do anything for a buck. I immediately resigned and assigned my ownership over to them. We all know what is going on right now in the real estate market. People are getting laid off everyday, many of my friends and associates are currently looking for work. My savings is dwindling and it seems I am over qualified to wash cats. If it was not for all the time I have been spending in my garden and the awesome companionship I get from my beagle (Milo) I would have gone nuts with worry. I just keep telling myself it is what it is and hope for the best.

We all must keep a positive attitude and our focus on the revolution. We come here to DP to support our great Statesman Ron Paul. Sometimes we are able to be human and communicate with our fellow patriots in times of need. We vent, we laugh, and we learn and share a lot of great information. We are family. We are American’s, we are in this together.

i know the feeling
i've been laid off now for over 3 months; though I got a call back this week to start back monday. I've been doing everything imaginable to make a few fiats (legal of course).
I too seen bad times
I sell manufactured housing in Florida and all the factories from here to Georgia are only running 2- 3 days every two weeks. Many dealers are thinking about closing up. Times are really tight right now.
Asphalt Maintenance
is what we do. Seal coating, crack filling, striping, etc. It has been horrible for two years. If it hadn't been for my mom and dad's help we would have lost our home a year ago. So I understand where you are coming from.
I just lost three jobs because some new guy took over at Schnuck's grocery over maintenance and the guy that authorized the work quit. I've bought the paint and now he won't let us do the work.
Trying to make it through the year...hopefully enough work will turn over to get us through winter.
I hope things get better for you too. :) We Mississippians have to stick together ;)
As a contractor
I am a little educated in contract law.. If you have a written contract and have bought the paint.. and he signed your contract.. go do the job and bill him.
The legal term is called "Consideration" or in other words "work". If you have a signed contract with work then it is a done deal and you'll be due your money.
If you don't have a signed contract take the paint back and pay the 20% or so Restocking fee.. if possible. Or you can always call and ask the guy to buy the paint from you for full price since he needs it anyways.
Hey ,Jen?
What county are you in?

Where are u located?
Where are u located?
Well, I do not want this to
Well, I do not want this to be a "whining time" thread but I , too, am at my wits end. I have a hotel in a beautiful little Arkansas town, and I have rental houses. The Motel had a great year last year and in January all at once things changed royally! My business is about 60% of where it was, and going downward, even though summer is the usually REALLY big time where we make our money to get through the winter. The revenues are horrid. Renters tore up 2 of my houses so much I can not rent them, and I do not have the money to fix them up. I have tried to sell them "as is" for STEAL pricing, like $39,000 for one and $50,000 for the other (which has central heat and air, a trailer with it, that I used to rent for $300.00 a month before trashed, a 40x60 ft metal shop and at least 2 extra lots) and I so far can't even SELL them to get out from under. My sign broke on the motel, so I need $6000.00+ for a new sign, and I do not know what the H I am going to do. I have been doing fine for 8 years, but paying all those mortgages every month has used up about all of my savings. I was at the bank today, trying to figure out if they can do anything, but whatever they DO do, it will put me more in debt.
It sucks. Somehow, however, I will be in DC on 7/12 and I gave out about 40 copies of the Constitution yesterday at a Meet the Candidates thing and stuck some old Ron Paul slim jims in some of them too. I am all by myself, so I am the one who has to do anything, but running away into the woods is starting to look better and better..hahahaha..
Rental houses
I know nothing about hotels, but I do have a little experience with rental homes....Couple of questions for you: How much do the homes rent for monthly (when repaired)? Approximately how much would it cost to repair the homes to get them back into condition to rent? If you can give me those numbers, maybe I can help you determine if you're priced appropriately.
Remember, when you're selling "as-is" type homes in need of major repairs, your target buyer will be an investor. Investors will not generally pay as much for a property as will an owner-occupant. Also, if you've got a lot of REO/foreclosure activity in the area, you're competing for that investor action. You need to price aggressively to attract buyers quickly. Vacant homes in bad condition get worse quickly when just sitting empty. They also attract vandals, vagrants, squatters......Along with bugs, spiders, snakes, and rats.
If you don't want to put up the info here, you are welcome to PM me.
It's bad but it's good:
We need President Paul. We don't need McCain, Hillary, or Obama. We need a man with a plan.
Tight all over
A week ago, a neighbor I was talking to (introducing him to RP!) mentioned that his company (garment business) made $22M last year, this year was determined to be on track for $18M, but has since been adjusted to be on track for only $2M. Employees have been showing up and doing their jobs, but waiting weeks for their regular paychecks. Yesterday my neighbor told me that the company just closed up, no warning, no checks for anyone, no back pay, no nothing. He doesn't know how he's going to pay the rent this next month. At least he'll have some free time now to watch AFTF...
In our nice gated community where the homes were going for close to half a million 12 - 18 months ago, several are now closed up due to foreclosure; several more are being rented out after sitting on the market for months and months...one family of renters had to move out because, although they were paying their monthly rent, the owner hadn't been paying the mortgage...so bank representatives stopped by their home to do an inspection for the impending foreclosure. That's how this family discovered that they needed to find a new home, and quick.
I myself did a freelance transcription job seven weeks ago...still haven't received payment for it...
But I'm not worried, because as we all know, we're not in a recession!!
Guard Dogs and Eggs
Selling into trends-
In a nearby town, many of the alternative green residents have a chicken or two. Their kids learn and the family gets some eggs.
With the economy going down, some people will get deperate. I predict there will be more of a demand for guard dogs for personal and property protection.
For chickens...

We need to take a serious stand
All of us who own businesses in here have to really think about how we can salvage what we are losing. Dr Paul would want us to do everything in our power to stop the wars and expose Bernanke and the fed so we can get a hold on the things we have have worked so hard for. What's the solution?
As business owners we have to stop supplying services until the government realizes that we are dead serious about this. We cannot allow them to give our hard earned jobs to foreigners. I feel bad about working so much in Canada but what can I do ? I have to feed my own family.
Wow...
I could not have imagined the wonderful posts I've gotten here...I couldn't asked for a better online family...hugs to all!

We've got a like 80 year old secretary
at the front of our area.. we treat her like grandma. She takes calls and plays solitare all day and bakes the most wonderful cookies. If they ever tried to fire her I think we would stage a strike.
Anyways, I heard her in passing as she was talking to one of her kids.. complaining about gas prices. She told the person on the other end of the line "I don't know about you... I'm old too. But we need to get up off of our asses because the only way this is goning to get fixed is a revolution.. like that nice Dr Paul talks about."
I about fell down...lol
I went to a thrift store
yesterday and was looking at the clothes, and a little old lady was beside me. I made a comment about if gas prices continue to rise, we will all be shopping at the thrift stores ( I resale ) but, never miss a bargin and I am not above wearing re-sale clothing. Well anyway, we got to talking about the sad shape this country was in, and she said to me, that she wished that Ron Paul would get it! She was a Ron Paul lady! I just smiled. I told her that RP was the choice for this country. She also told me she thought we were in the end of times, and it was God who was going to save us. No offense to any one.
lol Devon...
That was funny...

It is a good way to gauge
what is happening out there.
I'm putting up that matchmaking site.. have had horrible problems on my normal virtual server with e-mail issues (you'll see why this weekend, the site rocks)... anyways, I went to another virtual server, downloaded what I'd done so far, then called customer service to have them set up something I needed.
They were in the htdocs folder looking at what I'd done... the guy asked me... "So.. Ron Paul, huh?"
I said yes and damn proud of it. We continued talking about a few things I needed to buy to really jazz up the place.
Once we were done I asked him to just charge it to my card there. He said "No charge for this stuff... it's for the revolution."
Funny how one sentence can make you feel so proud of what you believe in.
Did you post your site link somewhere on dp? just curious...
