Senate wants Bush to stop filling oil reserve
The Senate demanded almost unanimously on Tuesday that President Bush halt the shipment of oil to the country’s strategic petroleum reserve as long as oil prices remain high.
“Sticking oil underground is wrong at this point in time,” Senator Byron Dorgan, Democrat of North Dakota, said as he urged approval of a measure offered by Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic majority leader.
The Senate voted, 97 to 1, to tell President Bush to halt the shipments to the strategic reserve, the supply of just over 700 million barrels that is stored in salt caverns along the Gulf Coast. The reserve is meant to protect the United States against a disastrous sudden cutoff of oil supplies, like the Arab embargo of the 1970s.

My rep. said this...
I've been watching him... He said he sent this to bush.

The Honorable George W. Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.V/.
Washington, D.C. 20500
Dear Mr. President:
I write to urge you to rescind the solicitation of bids to add more oil per day to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). It has come to my attention that the Administration is poised to add 13 million barrels to the SPR when current contracts expire, resulting in an increase to the SPR of 6,000 barrels per day (to 76,000 barrels per day). It is my understanding that these increased deliveries will be made from August-December, 2008.
Our economy is stagnant. The price of a barrel of crude oil stands at $114 per barrel; the price in }l4ay,2007, was just under $60 per barrel. The nationwide average price for a gallon of gasoline is $3.62, an increase of $.63 cents from ayear ago. Food prices are skyrocketing, energy costs are increasing, producer prices are increasing and consumer confidence is low. Housing foreclosures are continuing and credit is tight. Therefore, I question the necessity and timing of these new and increased deliveries to the SPR. The SPR has more than 700 million barrels in it, the highest level since before the Gulf Coast hurricanes. August is peak suÍrmer driving season and the early fall is when increased cargo for the holiday season is transported. Truckers are already paying high fuel costs, which has a ripple effect throughout the economy as the cost to transport goods increases. I know that your Administration has thus far refused to divert oil from the SPR. However, actually increasing deliveries to the SPR is even more counter-productive, given the current state of our economy. I ask that you immediately suspend the solicitation and forego any increase to the SPR at this time.
Sincerely,
JOSEPH COURTNEY

If the Congress wanted Bush to do or not do something, they could stop him or not stop him. They are all a bunch of treasonous ass wipes, they need to hang in front of the whitehouse along with the entire Bush administration.
They are ALL traitors and enemies of the USA.
So true. Thats why I hate
So true. Thats why I hate these asses that think anyone but bush will fix everything.
I have 4-5 family members that built them damn pipelines. They were pumping in the 70s and pumping it back in the ground. When I seen a film about this few years ago, I connected the dots and called a few relatives. Sure enough its all true they been storing oil for 40 years from the artic shelf.
They all confirmed that the Alaska oil fields were being discussed as the biggest ever. Then the company found out it was against the energy policy to inform the public of a new supply, as that would drive down cost.
The guy from the video was a chaplain who was forced to sign a confidential agreement and went public a few years ago.
Once again...
reelections take precident over energy independence. How about we free up environmental red-tape and extract our own natural resources. Contract out the damn drilling already!
Sounds like a good spot for
a terrorist hit...
This is the sad part.... the
This is the sad part.... the oil sands of canada have enough oil to fully supply this country for 75 years! the north shore of alaska has enough oil to supply this country with enough oil to run this country for who knows how long?? 100 years atleast? there is enough oil shall in colorado, wyoming, and utah to fully run this country for 200 years?? and yes shell oil has the technowlogy to get it out of the ground at 40.00 per barrell.. what is bulshit is the liberal jerk offs who won't let us do our own oil drilling! this is not even counting the oil and gas off the shores of california and florida! that is what is BULLSHIT!
as for me and my home, we shall worship the LORD
They Cant Do
Anything. Watch the Non-Energy Crisis by Lindsey Williams on youtube. It explains why our government cant and wont do anything about oil and gas. They know whats going on but, they dont want you to know. Granted the first segment is a little boring, however, it is well worth the time. Watch and see. http://www.youtube.com/wa...
WTF?
How much oil can a salt mine hold? This is Bullshit folks.
This is a band-aid approach
This is a band-aid approach if I've ever seen one. Oh wait, I forgot most of my fellow Americans look to see if their representatives have done SOMETHING, not if they've done something effective.
Odds are my two senators voted for this, and now I'm LESS likely to vote for them.
