I believe they are treated with ethylene gas, to retard the sprouting process (which my house apparently accelerates). Ethylene is a hydrocarbon gas, and I assume considered a pollutant when produced artifically, so I am guessing that is why the government is forcing the scaling back of its use.
Ethylene, by the way, is the same gas that ripening fruit produces, and which accelerates the ripening process (a self-catalyzing reaction). That is why sealing up bananas in a bag speeds up the ripening process.
I don't care for beets either but.......I noticed it's getting harder to find cane sugar at two of my local markets. The shelves are 'ripe' with a new kind of sugar....beet sugar. It's a dime cheaper that the cane in a 4lb bag. I 'dug' into it and found that they are making genetically modified beets into sugar to replace cane sugar.
BTW...horseradish is the best mixed with a little mayo for prime rib and the only thing suitable for shrimp cocktail sauce IMO
Also, I'd like to comment on the linked article. The beet sugar package does not say it is genetically modified. If it did other shoppers would do as I did and spend the dime for cane sugar.
Susan, I was just talking about those evil satanically-colored magenta beets, not the plain old sugar beet, which is OK in my book.
And how can ANYONE put that vile horseradish in their mouths! It is utterly repulsive and repugant to me --- I would literally rather eat a moldy dog turd than any trace of horseradish (or wasabi)!
BTW, sugar is at least one product of GMO crops that does not scare me, as it is a simple molecule that is refined from the original crop, and therefore is the exact same in every way, whether the original plant is GMO or not. Not that that is an endorsement of GMO crops, by any means.
As to the failure to label genetically modified, engineered and cloned meats I would hope we could agree that the consumer has the right to know. All this secret keeping has turned America into the land of the misled sheeple. What you don't know can hurt you and I don't like unwittingly being tossed into the petri dish.
I agree --- if it's so good for me, why are they afraid to SAY so?
For years I have challenged people to give me even three examples, from either politics or the business world, in which individual rights or consumer choice and knowledge have been expanded, rather than shrunk. I'm still waiting for those three examples ..... Bueller ........ Bueller .......

And you are so right about us being in a petri dish. "Lab rats for the power elite" is how I usually refer to us. 5 years working in clinical trials, I know more than I want about what "clinical trials" are all about.
Healthcare freedom, kids. It is hardly talked about and it is something VITAL. I would love to have Dr. Paul whisper in my ear why HE thinks we should not be forced to have our kids screened for mental illness. I think I know why... Mommas, don't let your babies get labelled as ADD or ADHD. Or depressed. Or anxious. Or SHY for crying out loud - SHY is now a mental illness, for which they will give you a pill.
My pill for depression did not work at all, my mother still died and my daughter still grew up and moved out. Oh well, Doctor ordered, I swallowed. Two wild and crazy years of recovering from the reaction to the drug followed, and I am still not "normal" or whatever it was I used to be. Please learn from my mistake, the "side effect" from these drugs, as they will tell you on TV even, over and over until you don't hear it any more, is SUICIDAL behavior. 4 attempts for me. I am lucky to be alive.
I have noticed
that my potatoes do not seem to be lasting as long as they used to.
So it is the lack of "gas" that is allowing them to spoil faster?
Guess it will have to go back to a seasonal produce?
Is that a good trade off?

Why do they spray
potatoes with gas??

When the shortages of beets
When the shortages of beets and horseradish start to develop, I will dance in the streets!
Don't start dancing to the disappearing sugar beet beat just yet

We can agree to disagree on the horseradish-I like wasabi too
