Lost ur job????
It's getting pretty bad out there. I'd like to hear some real life stories about whats going on around the country. Business is slow around here I know 6 people that got laid off in the past 2 months. Businesses are going under etc etc. Meanwhile parking tickes are still up to 165 dollars here in NYC

Freelance Web Designer here
Jobs are picking up as the big companies can't afford in house anymore. I have more work than I can handle on almost any given week. And I work remotely from home or an office of my choosing (hammock out back ;) ).
What I would suggest is that all the jobless or near jobless pool together and find common skills, network those skills into freelance positions, and help keep each other busy. As a freelancer you cut out the middle man, and can easily triple your hourly rate just starting out. Cut the overhead out and you'll find there's plenty to live on.
For what it's worth...
I'm in the "entertainment industry"... And I just managed to secure a loan of just under 1 million dollars from a close family friend... Either he's too wealthy to care or he's not paying attention to what's going on with our economy... Either way, the business venture I've just established involves managing/promoting international music tours... I just determine where in the world $ is being spent on concert tickets at any given time, book my shows, and hit the road... It's been working out well so far... My advice for any and everyone, wherever possible, is to be fully self-sufficient, self-employed, and independent on every level. As volatile as things are here right now, economically and socially, we should all be broadening our horizons...
Get trucking
The best thing a jobless person can do is create a new position. That's how wealth is built. You did the right thing.
DeadPrez just answered these questions.
Why the old adage that the rich gain more wealth during recession or economic downturn? Simple: because it’s true. But why?
Is the economy really headed down, or is now actually a time of extreme opportunity for those who understand...
We use our heads, create value which others will pay or trade for.
I use this quote often, because it is always appropriate:
"What the mind can CONCEIVE, and BELIEVE, it can ACHIEVE!" Napoleon Hill From "THINK AND GROW RICH".
Western NC
I'm between Asheville-Charlotte NC and smack up against SC...Rutherford County is the name...Unemployment here is about 9%...but its loads cheaper here than in NY..or even Asheville and Charlotte..
We have people in our house renting to own it..we just had to down size..no real choice.
My desire..if I get lucky and win the lotto or someone puts me in their will..is to buy a few small houses..rent them cheap..people cant afford to buy but lots can afford to rent.
We would love to hook up with someone who does civil service through the military..hubby is Ex-Navy...we hear the money is great but finding the jobs is almost impossible unless you pay...I'm sooooo ready to get out of here.
Freedom is another way to God...A corrupt government is a straight way to hell.
I keep a phone call list
My business is construction and my girlfriend fields my calls and she's very anal when it comes to keeping records. Since december 2007 we have recieved 589 calls from people looking for work in Michigan. previous years we would get the odd call maybe 2 a year. I had to lay off two crews in February.Possibly another one this month if something doesn't start coming in soon.
Still
paying off debt from last year. Almost paid off probably in 2-3 months. It was a slow start to the season for us. I do landscape construction. I laid off half my work force so I have to hustle alot more and work l;onger hours. It looks like the receptionist will be the next casualty. So I will work even longer hours. Unless I find a conpany to split the costs for the receptionist. I dont know how long it will be like this but the bottom line is I will pay off all my debt and keep it that way. Pay all cash
tomforron ... a suggestion
tomforron ... a suggestion for you!
Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the service (maybe another DP'er can help me out) but you can pay a company to basically be an answering service for your business ... you can even have voice mail, etc. set up. I know they've advertised on the radio often ... I'm sorry I can't think of the name, but I just wanted to point out that there are some options out there for you if you're forced to let go of the receptionist ... I wish you luck!
i consult
in the private sector for environmental due diligence. fortunately, some of my clients are large management funds that are buying up timberland at bargain prices. i perform their aquisition work. my other clients are suffereing (development). the bills are getting paid, but nothing fluffy like i saw a few years ago.
i also dabble in real estate. just sold my shares to the other partners in a subdivision. post permitting but prior to infrastructure. i'll do fine, but not as good as if i kept in for the long haul. thing is, that keeping in is in an ideal market. i have no faith that the market will turn around any time soon, so it was best for me to get out when the gettin was good.
i also have a rehab house that i have a line of credit to refurbish it. i've had some delays (waiting upon the sale of my shares in the subdivision), the city permitting/engineering, etc. i will have to hustle to get this fixed and get it rented. it should be interesting.
we are doing what we can.
promoting ron paul (my truck is spray painted with the revolution and website).
we have a great garden planted and will can the harvest
we're putting more of our savings into gold/silver
we've sold our gas guzzling cars, bought used and diesel. i'm going to convert one to run on filtered grease and have plans to buy a large titration station and make my own true biodiesel and sell it.
i am more scared now than i was a few years back. went through a divorce and basically all of my debts on my assets doubled. i was close to paying off my home, but now its doubled (wanted to keep the home, but pay off the ex). it is a challenge.
hell, look at the metals markets. even a beer can that weighs roughly 15gs. 30 cans to a lb. .60 cents to a lb in scrap. how many beers and sodas does your family drink? i don't mind pissing away money...at least i get the buzz...but throwing it away? nut uh. crush em, store em, and sell the scrap in a year or two.
try copper. if you're in the construction business, strip that old copper wire. you may have a small fortune in your buildings.
even iron is going bonkers. iron ore shares are currently out-performing gold right now.
we can all do this. think on it this way. the market IS correcting itself, because it is more powerful than those that want to control it, or think they can. help the market along and change focus. build your own wealth by forcing theirs a bit down. shop responsibly, conservatively, be a bear when you need to be a bear.
buy hog shares. hog farmers are going bankcrupt because grain is skyrocketed.....be savvy, it can be done!
it is not what you make, but what you keep
it is not what you have, but what you do with it
this applies to the poor and the rich.
share all you know and build good alliances, good friends, and good neighbors. this is what will really count when times are very tough.
peace
im in real estate. I work
im in real estate. I work mostly with short sales. I get them done then they blow up. I have been losing way more deals than closing. I am also losing my home it looks like, I couldnt get the bank to even return my phone call for months to try to work something out.
I encourage all my short sale customers to file chapter 7 bankruptcy to hopefully make all the people they owe money to(creditors) be worse off. Most of my friends, real estate agents, loan officers, builders, roofers, electricians, are all looking for work and many in foreclosure. It seems their is a portion of society thats isnt affected by the economy. People that were already well off, or homes paid off. I wonder how fast thing will fall apart. Will it just crash, or slowly fade.
Hi Steven
I am a Manager for a staffing company..(temporary, temporary to hire and permanent placement for a fee to the company that contracts w/us). I have been making my living doing this for 12 years. It has been stable for about 9 months (no growth, no loss) but now we are in the category of *bad* ( revenue losses, lost business, companies going bankrupt, not paying us, etc) this has been happening for about the last 6 months and it is getting worse. I have waaay more to say about fake unmeployment figures and what actual owners/hiring managers are telling me on a daily basis when I call on them to see if they can use some interim support with regard to their labor force as opposed to what the sheeple hear on msm but I think I may write a book instead and try to publish it.....I am thinking of calling it The 4th Reich (sp?)...what do you think? too controversial?
Peace,
Betsy
Lol
A few weeks ago, when the labor department announced that it had yet again calculated that the unemployment rate had fallen at the same time that more net jobs were being lost, the New York Times made an interesting observation.
While noting that by historical standards, the unemployment rate has been remarkably low .. the paper went on to note that a different statistic, the percentage of people who were jobless, was the highest it has been since world war two.
Hmm .. unemployment rate or percentage of jobless people .. ya might think they would tell about the same story but they keep going in different directions ... That fact tells a story in an of itself
Soooo I'll also most likely be out of a job soon too... what do
you think of the name of my new book?
hahaha

I work in the offshore oil
I work in the offshore oil and gas industry and it was slow but now its picking up again. I talked to friends at other companies and they haven't worked much while I have stayed relatively busy. I work in a industry that many people refuse to work or if the do they don't last long. I have stayed busy because when the going got tough meaning unlimited work I always stepped up to the plate. I have no problems staying away from my family 9 months a year because I know it will get alot worse. I have told my old lady this year don't expect me to take time off and she hasn't complained because she is noticing things about the economy. I don't know if I will make it but I will probably be one of the ones to turn out the lights due to being the most experienced at my company. I would hint to anyone that is desperate get a job on a boat because most people refuse to work away from hom. Hell I was reading today that the oil and gas industry is a good field to get into because 80% of the people will be retiring in 10 years and I can back it up. Most of the people I work with are on the verge of retiring and when that happens it wont be good. All I can say is if You don't mind sacrificing for You're family its a good career but if You are a pussy whinner don't even waste our time because We will run you off in a heart beat. I am sorry if I sound mean but thats how it is and guess what in a few years this job will be golden because it will more than likely still be in demand and be DRAFT proof.
Sooo, Jkm how might a woman w/mgmt exp go about getting a
gig like this?
Industrial labor mgmt exp/hr/sales..not afraid to be away from home etc etc blah...can you give me a pointer or two?
Thanks,
Betsy

alot of the jobs pay real good even the manual labor jobs because people do not want to work 12 - 24 hours a day or away from home. They have a oil field directory that lists all the companies and their phone numbers that is put out every year. Also alot of these jobs are not entry level but with maybe 2 years You will be making decent money.
