Spanish firm offers $12.8 billion to lease Pa. Turnpike
A Spanish toll-road operator won the bidding war to operate the Pennsylvania Turnpike, offering $12.8 billion for a 75-year lease, Gov. Rendell said today.

The proposal by Abertis Infraestructuras, of Barcelona, must be approved by the Pennsylvania legislature, and legislative leaders in Harrisburg have said the plan faces tough sledding with lawmakers.

Will we get a huge tax
Will we get a huge tax return check? I think not. So I guess as tax payers we're the original leasers?

Freedom For Life
Just say No.
This is how a nation that is 9 Trillion dollars in debt has to pay it back. But what the heck commuters don't care. They just want to get their fast. Could be a bad investment for the Spaniards when we cant afford gas.
Sounds good
I don't see any problem with this. I'm all for privatization of roads and international trade. Dr. Paul is as well.
Of course not.
Fortune Favors the Bold
Hell, why don't we just build a masive superhighway from Mexico to Canada to facilitate all the wonderful free trade?
You dont see a problem?
How about selling the infrastructure of your nation to foreign nationals who will raise the introductory price to drive on the road you built? How about selling national military secrets? Those can be quite lucrative. Keep reading young grasshopper and post less.
Big difference between
selling roads and selling military secrets. Foreign companies building or buying roads in the U.S. is not a threat to national security. We benefit from foreign investment. If a foreign owner tried to mess with our national security, we'd just re-nationalize the road. No problem. They would know better than to threaten our national security, because they would lose their investment.
If an owner of a road raises the price to drive, that's their private property rights. If it's too high, they'll lose customers. Nobody will drive on it unless they benefit from driving on it. Read up on Dr. Paul's arguments for privatization of roads.

USA for $ale
The federal government is broke, but can print money as needed.
The states cannot. I expect this deal and many others like it to be approved.
Why not offer California $10B for the right to open a casino in downtown LA or Sacramento? The state would have little choice but to take it. Eventually, almost all 50 states will sell off infrastructure (roads, rail, ports, etc), gambling rights, and even begin to sell public lands to investors.
How about taking land from citizen owners via eminent domain, creating "infrastructure", and then reselling it to foreign interests for a profit? With billions in deficits, what's a state to do? Politicians can't stay in power by selling reality. They need to sell false entitlement promises in order to be elected by the masses.
Instead of a corporate Spanish interest, how about if this offer was from a sovereign wealth fund in China or the UAE? Like the Dubai Ports deal?
What else are foreign interests supposed to do with all the dollars we sent them for flat screen televisions, cars, furniture, clothing, and oil? They can't keep lending these dollars back to us forever. Eventually, they will redeem them, as they propose in this deal.
Residents of Pennsylvania are lucky that it's just the roads that are being purchased. Tomorrow, it may be their employer... if they have one.
And the French are fingerprinting us in NJ

It's another hidden tax
for all those who utilize the turnpike!
What are the current tolls from the road?
It's doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand the rates will be raised to cover the annual payment plus profit - who are we kidding?
YET ANOTHER TAX! They will be able to charge whatever they like!
(planning commission sells out)
How would you feel if a foreign country leased half of all the houses in your suburb, and declared they will manage and rent them for 75 years. At the end of 75 years, they will be available for sale? One company. This is not the vision for America, or anywhere. Your lives should not be run by the bottom line of the stock market. If anything, we have to reduce the expansion "pave paradise" trend, and encourage sustainable population growth.
