Developing story: Lieberman wants Youtube to start self-censoring
Sen. Joe Lieberman had asked Google yesterday to tear out any YouTube videos from terrorist groups like Al Qaeda. Google issued a response today on its own public policy blog, saying the company was glad to take down videos showing violence and hate speech -- basically those that didn't conform to YouTube's existing policy.
But it's not going to do a wholesale removal. This is what they said of Lieberman's request:
"While we respect and understand his views, YouTube encourages free speech and defends everyone's right to express unpopular points of view. We believe that YouTube is a richer and more relevant platform for users precisely because it hosts a diverse range of views, and rather than stifle debate we allow our users to view all acceptable content and make up their own minds."
Google's YouTube, which gets thousands of video submissions a day and can't police them all, will stick with its current system that encourages users to flag inappropriate videos (just as Lieberman's staff apparently did with a number of terrorist videos.) If videos violate the rules, they get removed.
Other than that, Google said: "users are always free to express their disagreement with a particular video on the site, by leaving comments or their own response video."

I cannot figure out how lieberman LOST his PRIMARY during the last election and still won the election. Does anyone know the last time an incumbant senator lost his own primary?

Lieberman Wants Google to Block Terrorist Videos
By Jesse A. Hamilton on May 19, 2008 6:26 PM | Permalink | Comments (5)
Sen. Joe Lieberman, following up on his homeland security committee's staff report on terrorists' Internet use, called on Internet giant Google to remove YouTube content posted by terrorist organizations.
In a letter to Google's chairman today, Lieberman wrote, "Islamist terrorist organizations use YouTube to disseminate their propaganda, enlist followers, and provide weapons training. YouTube also, unwittingly, permits Islamist terrorist groups to maintain an active, pervasive, and amplified voice, despite military setbacks or successful operations by the law enforcement and intelligence communities."
Al Qaeda routinely posts videos on YouTube that show such things as assassinations, military and civilian deaths and incitements to violence, Lieberman contends.
He's got a lot of nerve
Most of us will flag something horrible but the internet is free space and free speech, duh.
