House Passes Bill to Sue OPEC Over Oil Prices
Washington - The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved legislation on Tuesday allowing the Justice Department to sue OPEC members for limiting oil supplies and working together to set crude prices, but the White House threatened to veto the measure.
The bill would subject OPEC oil producers, including Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela, to the same antitrust laws that U.S. companies must follow.
The measure passed in a 324-84 vote, a big enough margin to override a presidential veto.
The legislation also creates a Justice Department task force to aggressively investigate gasoline price gouging and energy market manipulation.
"This bill guarantees that oil prices will reflect supply and demand economic rules, instead of wildly speculative and perhaps illegal activities," said Democratic Rep. Steve Kagen of Wisconsin, who sponsored the legislation.
The lawmaker said Americans "are at the mercy" of OPEC for how much they pay for gasoline, which this week hit a record average of $3.79 a gallon.

This is a joke, right? This
This is a joke, right? This is moronic. Even if this made any real sense, how actually does one country go about "suing" another country. I'd love to see that.
As Mark Twain said, "Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself."
Gas price
The price of gas in Northwest Indiana is $4.09 a gallon for unleaded regular. We have refineries here......but they still put us higher than the national average.

"The lawmaker said Americans
"The lawmaker said Americans "are at the mercy" of OPEC for how much they pay for gasoline, which this week hit a record average of $3.79 a gallon."
Kind of like how the rest of the world is "at the mercy" of out-of-control, militant American imperialism?
I am reminded of a quote from Will Rodgers regarding
the U.S. Congress.
"Every joke they pass is a law and every law they pass is a joke."
Completely absurd act of legislative masturbation (please excuse my use of the language) with the sole aim of public misdirection in terms of identifying the cause of price inflation. It's worked in the past and they actually stand a fair-to-good chance that, for a period of time, it will give the appearance that it can be spun in a positive fashion for the near future. And who will wind up paying for the legal costs, undertaken by the oil companies, in defending any lawsuits that are born as a result of this moronic legislative effort? We all know the answer to that question. One of the things that is so disappointing about this whole legislative con job, is the numbers involved in the vote that passed the legislation. It didn't just squeak through. It's indicative of a mixture of strident ignorance and outright dishonesty. The proportions of those two qualities may be the subject of debate.
Now
I bet Paul was among the 84 that said no. What a ridiculous statement! Well, when congress and president approve (not vote for) the Bush admin decision to attack Iraq and voted for the funding time and again, they automatically voted for higher oil prices, from 27 USD to 127 USD and the futures market shows it is going much higher, 132 USD today. They do not understand that the consumption of CHina etc for oil drives up demand, and prices as well and the lower USD automatically means higher oil prices. They should sue themselves and the Fed!!!
Classic misdirection from
Classic misdirection from the root problem.
The corporate elite's environmental lobby has prevented the creation of new refineries for 30 years!
We have all the oil we need, we don't need the Saudi's oil at all!
Even if production is tripled, we couldn't turn it into gasoline quickly enough to make a dent in the price at the pump.
Stop turning cornfields into ethanol!
Start building hydrogen generators, wind generators and parabolic solar collectors!
Don't look for government to solve anything!
Installing a Hydranox5000 has improved my truck's MPG by 20%
My small photovoltaic system worked great when my entire town was without electricity Monday. I can't wait to enlarge it!
WHAT A BUNCH OF IDIOTS!!!
WHAT A BUNCH OF IDIOTS!!! Jeez, I'll bet those poor OPEC nations are REALLY trembling in their boots over this action. "Start producing more oil or we'll sic our lawyers on you guys! THAT'LL teach you!" Broooother, these guys are just an international embarrassment. I'm ashamed to be sharing the same continent with these morons.

Raise Specualtors Margin Requirements ..
The only legislation I have seen that makes any sense in this application was the one advanced (and now ignored) about raising the margin requirements on speculators in the commodity markets ... no money, no play, That sounded good to me.
This sentence:
but the White House threatened to veto the measure
says it all.
Says it all.

Freedom For Life
Alice in Wonderland
Congress now thinks it can unilaterally create laws that apply to other countries. Weird. How are we going to enforce this? By refusing to buy their oil? (I'm sure Venezuela's response will be "Okey Dokey".) Or by invading those other countries? America has become a rogue nation.
Our congresscritters now think they're experts in supply and demand in the oil markets. If speculators in the futures market are indeed bidding up oil to excessive levels they will be burned when their contracts come due for delivery (they will be forced to buy above the spot price) and that will punish them more than Congress can. Likewise if some speculators are withholding physical oil from the market then there are two possibilities: They will be able to sell at a higher price in the future, because there really is greater demand then than now, or they will be stuck selling at a lower price. If the former case applies we should be grateful that some people were prescient enough to save oil for when we really needed it. If the latter case applies the speculators are again punished for their bad bets.
Why don't they...
Why don't they just pass a law temporarily suspending the law of gravity, because it will reduce the amount of jet fuel needed to fly planes? It makes about as much sense as suing OPEC.
Sorry...sue them all you want, the US justice department doesn't have jurisdiction over the wold...yet.
good point!
hehe "suspending the law of gravity" good one.
really-- what are they thinking??? OR maybe this is just all done for OUR entertainment? So the average Amerikan thinks that their government is looking out for them? Now... back to Dancing with the Stars! and other important things.......
They need to Sue themselves!
And all of those that supported legislation that decreased the value of the dollar through overspending and sending us to war. Anyone that supported letting Bush declare war, they need to be sued too... and more.
YOU'RE FIRED!!!!
Nincompoops!!!!
As Mr. Tuma stated below, it's the dollar...not the oil!!! We are operating on a petro-dollar instead of gold/silver. The oil doesn't cost any more to produce, and there isn't any shortage...it's expensive because the American dollar isn't worth anything. Think pre-war Germany...wheelbarrow-full-of-money-for-a-loaf-of-bread-thing. Reverting to the gold-standard as RP suggests would fix it...too bad Fort Knox is empty.

Yeah, and a couple of days ago
the Saudi oil minister said as much. It's the dollar and speculation over it's continued trajectory.

So after the Zionist owned Fed devalues the dollar now
Theyre gonna blame it on Iran, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia???
lolol I say good job to the Zionists. A job well done. So they make money, devalue the dollar and soon will have support of Americans who will blame it on Venezuela and Saudi Arabia. and theyll also get another war for Israel and make more money wow.

I Bet Ron Paul Would Vote Against That
We have no right to get entangled with these other countries. In fact, we should start drilling more domestically. The Federal Government has squashed any ability for new oil drilling in the Great Lakes, yet Canada has over 200 oil heads in Lake Erie alone. Plus, we buy the most oil from Canada. The States should have the right to decide.
Possible Scape
Goat for the coming economic crash?
Let's sue Ben Bernanke instead!
Is it really OPEC's fault? Ben Bernanke is the one printing billions of new dollar bills--it's his fault they're not worth anything!

So
now congress can run all over the world and force its laws on other nations? Boy we got alot of people in the world being regulated without representation don't we. If their not careful all these people out in this big old world might decide to revolt and have a boston false flag party or even worse sign up for welfare. Man i'm going to have to get two jobs now to pay for that. oh! thats right i don't even have one job i'm layed off. Oh well one of you guys can cover me and get another job.

I didn't know Anti-Trust laws were global? Is this really any different than getting a ticket from a Brittish Traffic officer for driving on the wrong side of the road in the United States?

They can't enforce it, but I think that may be the entire point.

Well Isn't That Special
It shows how moronic they think the U.S. citizens are. For the most part, they are right. Most idiots will jump on this bandwagon.
It should be the citizens of the U.S. suing Congress for continuously allowing the fed to debase our currency and allowing speculators to scare the hell out of the public. The oil companies have a right a make a profit and it's not as excessive as it's made to seem.
Congress should also be sued for not allowing for domestic oil exploration and allowing the liberals to turn this into a "protect animals first policy". F%@# the people they say.
Astonishing Chutzpah
In finest Congressional tradition, our current crop of statist toadies redirects the blame and seeks a scapegoat for their own crimes.
In 1964 an ounce of silver would get you four gallons of gasoline.
Today, an ounce of silver will get you four gallons of gasoline.
The fe'ral government and the banksters have succeeded in gulling you if you're blaming OPEC for inflation.
