This is as far as government should go. Our liberties don't come from the government, they come from a higher power. Which power you believe in is up to the people. The only function of government in this arena is to not infringe on these liberties and to protect them against foreign threat.
God needs to be in Government, but NOT one certain religion. Government needs to respect that it is God and not them that grants us our rights/liberty.
Government should have nothing to do with religion and shall not make any laws regarding it....
If I want to have a license plate designed for my beliefs then that is my right.. they have a TON of license plates out there for many organizations and belief systems...
Just because someone has a license plate that says "Elvis Lives" does not mean that the state believes it, or supports it...it merely means that the person with the tag believes it and the state supports their freedom of speech. Freedom includes religion. nuff said.
should stay separate. That means stay out...period. If they rule in favor of the Jews, or the Christians, then the government has in essence stuck their nose into the people's religion...and ruled accordingly (with a law) in favor of one or the other. Separate means separate. All religion is up to the people. The government should bow out...remove themselves from the disagreement...state it is not within their jurisdiction to control...and let the people decide. That is true separation of church and state.
As far as the tags...the 1st amendment also clarifies that one...I don't care who makes the tags. The government cannot restrict ANY speech, (even if they are the ones printing the speech) or restrict the exercise of ANY religion. What...the government can now control what you put on your tags if "they" are the ones printing the tags??? Really? I didn't notice that exception noted in the 1st amendment ....free speech is guaranteed unless it is "paid for" by the government...and if the government pays for it then they have the right to contol your speech ??? Is this for real ???
Then the government can restrict anything you say in court (or any other governmental area which is just about everywhere nowadays) because they are the ones "providing the service" to the people. Better wake up.
The 1st amendment does not contradict itself. It's very clear about free speech and freedom of religion...there are no exceptions.
I agree with the jews.
Like wafflehutguy below, I too lived in S.FL and saw the abolishion of Christmas trees, nativity scenes, triple crosses, etc...while minorahs, stars of david, etc were deemed OK. The Fort Lauderdale City's "Christmas Boat Parade" which had a 30+ year history was renamed the "Winter Boat Parade", so as not to offend the fast-growing jewish population. I have zero love or patience for that crap.
However, license plates are distributed by THE STATE. There must be a separation of CHURCH and STATE!!! Otherwise, we get into these pissing contests between the "jesus freaks" and the "normal people" and the "jews" and everyone else. Opinions and bellybuttons...but I say, leave all the religeous stuff off state-run material. This includes the "Choose Life" garbage as well, as it blatantly a christian/born-again matra. If you want a jesus fish on your back bumper, go for it.
In an attempt to pre-empt an attack by the blog police: How does this relate to RP's campaign? Dr. Paul insists that this sort-of-thing, like abortion, be a state-decided thing, not a federal issue. Even though he would personally most likely want to throw his hat into the ring on issues such as these, being a god-fearing christian, he is wise enough to understand that this should NOT be a federal issue. Wise indeed.

It's a States' Rights issue..and everyone else should butt out. If South Carolina wants to rename itself Christopia, it is none of my business, or yours, or the federal government's. If Nevada wants to name itself Whoretopia, the same rules apply.
And the so-called "separation" of church and state is irrelevant. That only applies to the federal government.

"I believe," not that the state believes it. If you guys would look at the writings of the founding fathers, the First Amendment promises "Freedom of religion," not "Freedom FROM religion." I would certainly expect the state to offer the same kinds of tags for Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Wicca, etc. If they refused to do so, THEN the AJC would have room for complaint.
Tell you what, AJC. Since "Jews" connotates those who practice a religion, Judaism, and 85% of you as classified as "nonreligious" or "hostile to religion" (Source: Dennis Prager), either change the name of your religion, stop calling yourselves "Jews" or stop kvetching,
These displays are not unconstitutional. Even Judge Moore's Ten Commandments monument was not unconstitutional. The "separation of church and state" does not exist on a constitutional level.
The First Amendment forbids the Congress from ESTABLISHMENT of a religion, i.e., a state church, like the Church of England.

I am living in Tennessee at this present time...They have all kinds of liscense plates.. mountains, clubs of all kinds (greek and fraternity) collegiate, military, (what the heck is mother of Gold star) animal friendly, earth friendly, children frirendly, Elvis Presley, basically anything and under the sun....
and the one they had a problem approving was Choose Life...it was eventually approved...but the arguement against was tremendous...
God forbid someone wants choose life as an option......
I believe is awesome...and not necessarily Christian.....
umm, I believe the aliens are real, I believe George Bush was a good president, ( I almost choked just typing that one)
my point...I believe is so basic and can refer to just about anything that a man's mind can conjur up......If it said...I believe Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior, (he is, btw) then it would be a religious concept...
but it does not....it is just them trying to butt into anyone's life....let's keep them out of it and grow up........ live and let live
I agree with the AJC that this crosses over the line. While I don't agree that it is an overt governmental endorsement (it's the individual's choice to display such tags) - that the government makes this option available to the public, gives the appearance of an endorsement, and crosses the line.
It wouldn't even matter if they also offered Star of David, Islamic, Zen Buddhist, Confucian, Zoroastrian, Scientologist, LDS, Wiccan, Church of Satan, NAMBLA, etc. etc. options - it sends the wrong message. Once the state opens the door - University Alumni plates, WWII /Vietnam/Korean War veteran, FOP, blah, blah, blah, it's not such a stretch to offer plates showing allegiance to a faith. Doesn't make it right, just explains it.

I believe ...
that AJC members are a bunch of intolerant jackasses.
"I believe..." doesn't connote anything specific.
When are Jews, either cultural or religious, going to start condemning this kind of nonsense?
If the actions of the AJC were judged by the same standards as Moslem clerics, this kind of religion bashing would cease.
There is a cross and a stained glass window on it...
...kind of hard to misconstrue the meaning.
