Nation's Poorest 1% Now Controls Two-Thirds Of U.S. Soda Can Wealth

WASHINGTON—A report on growing disparities in the concentration of U.S. aluminum-can wealth, released Tuesday by the Department of Commerce, revealed that 66 percent of the nation's recyclable assets are now held by the poorest 1 percent of the population.

According to the sobering report, the disproportionate distribution of soda-can wealth is greater than ever before, and has become one of the worst instances of economic inequality in the nation's history. Data showed that over-salvaging of cans by a small and elite group of can-horders has created a steadily growing and possibly unbridgeable gap between the rich and the mega-poor.

you know I got laid off 2 weeks ago

I have made pretty good money in my life. But this story actually made me think hard about going out and pickin up soda cans. I can't aford to buy gold or silver maybe I should just go pick up some aluminum would be kind of weird having people see me digging in the trash but hey what I found would be all mine. Do you have to pay taxes on this stuff when you turn it in? Hey guys I might be turnin into a hobo before long keep your eyes peeled and wave as you go by.

If nothing else, consider it gas money.....

You might be surprised how much that can help out...

Taxes?

We take alum cans to the recycle place all the time.....It's all done in cash and no one has ever asked for a name or SS#. I don't see how the gov't can tax your money you make doing that.

There are also places that pay for steel cans, etc. You can take all kinds of metal to turn in for cash. We see old alum boats, lawn chairs, old metal lawn furniture/patio sets etc. Salvage places pay by the pound for that stuff same as for alum cans.

The exception to that would be some cities are now requiring salvage yards to record info on people turning in copper; that is largely due to the rash of copper thefts from residential & commercial AC unit.

Good luck with that dumpster diving!
