Ron Paul Will Lead Freedom Walk '08: Green Bay to Minneapolis-St. Paul
Yesterday Ron Paul appeared in San Diego for a private brunch followed by a rally and book signing. I was fortunate to be in attendance. I had been discussing an idea for a “Freedom Walk” from Green Bay, WI to Minneapolis with members of the Ron Paul activist community, and availed myself of the opportunity to talk about the idea with Dr. Paul and several members of his staff.
Dr. Paul loves the idea of a Freedom Walk to the Republican National convention host city and has agreed to lead us into the city for the last portion of the Walk!
Can you envision Dr. Paul leading a peaceful, organized force of 25,000 friends of freedom into the city, converging at a rally where a like number of liberty lovers are gathered? It turns out that Congressman Paul has been planning for and is very desirous to see a substantial rally in Minneapolis coincident with the RNC. The idea of a Freedom Walk dovetails very nicely with the campaign’s plans for a big rally. It also coincides with Ron Paul’s plan to announce at that place and time his new Foundation which will carry the Freedom Movement forward after the RNC.
Dr. Paul is also very adamant that this be a peaceful, non-violent, positive exercise in Freedom. I would like to note that he has often spoken of the example of Gandhi and non-violent civil disobedience. The proposed walk would be roughly the same distance and take the same number of days as Gandhi’s Salt March which led to the independence of India from British colonialism (and which was the beginning of a campaign of civil disobedience against an UNFAIR TAX on the production of salt).
The specifics of this Walk and rally are in the development stage. The current conception is this:
-Walk begins in Green Bay, WI at Lambeau Field on August 11 at the Packers’ Monday Night Football home season opener. Ron Paul leads us on the first few miles “kick off” the Walk.
-Gandhi started with 87 walkers committed to going the distance...we will start with no less than this number committed to walking the heartland of America for 251 miles and 3 weeks.
-There will be a logistical team to manage food, water, supplies, belongings, sleeping arrangements ect for the walkers. There will be a medical team.
-There will be a money bomb to raise funds for the project including assisting walkers with their expenses.
-Walkers will be Ambassadors of Liberty, distributing literature and talking to citizens in the dozens of towns they will pass through on the route. Some of the larger cities we will pass through include Wausau and Eau Claire.
-Ron Paul rejoins the Walk for the last leg leading a peaceful force of 25,000 into St. Paul 3 weeks later converging at a rally. Ron Paul announces his new Foundation.
-There is also the idea of holding a “Constitutionalist Convention” in a hotel ballroom parallel to the RNC. We will gather to meet, draft and vote on resolutions, form committees of Dr. Paul’s new organization and conduct similar business.
It is hoped that the July 12 rally and July 13 Convention in Washington DC will be precursors to and prepare the ground for the Minneapolis events. It is not meant to replace those events or efforts or be in competition.
A number of Ron Paul organizers and Freedom activists across the country are already on board with the general thrust of this plan. Please be a part of developing, shaping and putting into practice this vision. We hope that you can see the huge potential here and want to act on it and be a part of it. An organizing committee is forming now.

I don't know if they care, but I just went to this web site to request that they report on this. It's my suggestion that everyone visit this site with a respectful request to see this story on their network. Even if they do a report scoffing the idea, it would help get the word out.

This is a great idea. Maybe we should get in touch with some of the VFW's and American Legion's especially in the surrounding area to check out the response.

I'm an Obama supporter but I admire Ron Paul & I REALLY admire the energy & enthusiasm that Paul's supporters have brought this year.
It's the first time I've checked this site in a couple of months and I'm glad to see that you are staying engaged and have some really cool stuff planned. If I was nearby I would absolutely attend.
I think Ron Paul supporters are the only people who can resuscitate the Republican party.

I live in japan though and won't be back in the US at that time of year (I'll probably go to NetRoots Nation in Austin and won't be able to go back again).
I don't think Obama is going to take away my freedom, personally.
I also support Universal Health Care (I use it in Japan and love it) and would like to see America join the rest of the industrial world and implement their own version of it. The Japanese system that I use now costs substantially less than what my friends pay in the US (for less comprehensive coverage, no less), everyone is covered and I can use any doctor/hospital/clinic, most of which are private. People don't have to worry about losing their insurance if they change jobs and as a result, they have a freedom to pursue 'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness' that is increasingly difficult in America.
Who knows? If the Dems nominated Hillary, I just might vote for Paul, if he was the alternative. As it is though, I'd still take her over the presumptive Republican nominee, McSame.

I agree. I think we could come up with a better name. I also think it would be great to have a true conservative platform written by Ron Paul Republicans and compare it to the wishy-washy, watered down excuse for the regular Republican platform.
Maybe the regular republicans would be willing to write a more conservative platform knowing our platform will outshine theirs..... On second thought, they wouldn't follow it anyway.
Speaking of the movement
I was watching a documentary about the black civil rights movement last night. In it, John Henrik Clarke was talking about how Martin Luther King Jr. was a great inspiration and had many successful rallies but that he regretted that that's all they really were. He said that they should have not done as much ceremonial acts and did more of the boring, behind the scenes work such as working within the political system.
I couldn't help but think about our situation. I think we should be publicizing and getting more actively involved in getting people with our values elected than with marches. Not that the marches are a bad idea, I just think we should focus on the boring, behind the scenes stuff more though.

Anyone else getting really excited for this march on D.C.? I hope we can rock the capital, and set the foundation for a huge rally in St. Paul! While I won't be able to attend the 3 week march from Green Bay to St. Paul, I would be willing to contribute to getting the Blimp to the RNC. Let's make it happen!

While driving home yesterday
While driving home yesterday I listened to some talk radio- it was some sort of Memorial Day program. The host appeared to be liberal one minute and conservative the next. But what stuck with me was his thoughts about how Congress is not listening to the American People, or even caring for that matter, what the People expect from them.
The host went on to say that while the Internet may help with the dissemination of information, it does little to influence Congress. I agree. More than ever, Congress seems to be strident in their opposition to any and all imput or demands by the People. I mean just look at the Patriot Act, the National ID, HR 1955, and other such unconstitutional legislation. The list goes on and on. Could the desire for power, and the influence of special interest groups in Congress be that pervasive?
It was then that the host went on to suggest that the ONLY thing that ever seems to get the attention of our elected officials is when the People have had large marches. Look at history.
Perhaps this thread is the answer. Will Ron Paul supporters walk the talk?

Trying to get to all the conventions is going to more than tap us out - but we plan to be at the Convention whether we get to be delegates or not. We would LOVE to do this - even if it were within a few days, we might be able to make that work.

They still have everything for the Blimp. I am sure we can raise $100,000 Dollars we have 2 months. Granny Warriors where are you on this. We should plan the Money Bomb to be on 4th of July. A great plan, freedom relay rally...needs quite a bit of organizing and scheduling.
Fife and Drums
Using two sets of numbers, average daily progress will be between 15.7 and 17.5 miles. Like Gandhi, Ron Paul is trying to take his country back. I can already hear the fife and drums behind Ron Paul as marchers enter St. Paul.
Please post the timetable here
so that those of us making reservations for the convention can take an extra day and join the last leg of the march with Dr. Paul.

Gandhi didn't have a bunch of people that have become office people. This a great idea but 3 weeks? Maybe it should be a shorter distance.... for those that want to join beginning to end... no one can take 3 weeks off of work.

I'm one of the people who will walk the whole way. There are plenty of us who can, and do, make these sorts of sacrifices (of time and treasure). A group starting that builds mass along the way seems ideal. Everyone has a part to play.

This is doable !!!!! THIS CAN BE BIG....I MEAN BIG .....and undeniable.

With a little planning it will make the blimp( which was a great start ) look like a weather balloon of hot air.
The fallout of this bomb will blowback across the prairie like rolling thunder ( there's a thought....walking doesn't need to be the only means of travel ) In the state which is proud home to Harley Davidson Million Biker Parades, over the well traveled route to Sturgis, home to many historically effective Freedom Ride Rallys ( coordinate with ABATE, ROLLING THUNDER, rights groups, as well as meet ups )... The tempo can be pushed to converge towards the end....many routes ....many modes ( WI, home also to the Famous Oshkosh Experimental Aircraft Fly in)...many paces....( bicycles, horses, wagons, classic cars...) there are no doubt RP fans in all these groups and more... its a great way to get new people alert ( Cheeseheads love a parade ).... fellow hobbyists from neighboring states can be induced to cross the line and join in. Many in these clubs are naturally inclined toward the freedom message. The more routes and modes and local contingents, the more disbursed media coverage, which is harderer to suppress.
Starts as a walk...culminates as a Gallup-ing ( sic) charge ( I mean this most peaceably ).
