Sex Pistols support or pick-on Ron Paul on the Tonight Show?
I noticed as Johnney Rotten (John Lyden) who is the singer of the Sex Pistols was in between lyrics he said a couple of things to Ron Paul. The first was I think was...
"Hello Mr. Paul"
and the second...
"So when are you planning to get out of Iraq"
I can't really tell if the Sex Pistols were applauding Dr. Paul or just shuving it to him because he is a politician.....I mean come on, Ron Paul is the closest thing to an Anarchist presidential candidate out there being a libertarianistic Constitutionalist. Plus his views on ending the war on drugs and guns rights I'm sure is something all anarchists agree on.
If you think just because the Sex Pistols were singing a song about Anarchy doesn't reflect their views, then think again. Mr. Johnney Rotten, I would say, has had a pretty consistant background on anarchy. He(with the rest of the band) even publicly denied the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame award...while bashing the industry within their statement.
So...your thoughts on what happened?

Johnny Rotten endorsed Ron Paul
He said,"When are we getting out of Iraq?"
This was greeted by much enthusiasm from the audience. Johnny also greeted "Mr. Paul" and shook his hand at the end of the set.
Just in case this wasn't clear to you.
Canada Loves Ron Paul
Thanks...and it is clear to me...
...I just posted this article because the author seconded this point.
(I'm glad) Canada Loves Ron Paul
Sex Pistols endorsement? Sounds like it!
This just in...2 hour ago :
Never mind the polls, Paul may have Sex Pistols endorsement
http://rawstory.com/news/...
"But what made the broadcast magic — and Leno himself noted it was fitting — was the Sex Pistols singing 'Anarchy in the UK' right after the Paul interview, with Johnny Rotten, after singing 'I want to be in anarchy,' adding a characteristically menacing but implicitly supportive 'Hello, Mr. Paul.'
Has to be somewhere in the forum archives...
Just now I searched in vain for a previous separate forum that did a most EXCELLENT job in explaining how Johnny was truly showing him respect.
It went into all this really great detail about gestures, etc.
Dern...I really wish I could have found this for you!
Johnny Rotten is an American Citizen
I haven't seen this commented upon yet (maybe I missed it), but during the taping of the promos, Johnny Rotten mentioned that he is now an American citizen.
it's the alternative generation...
i used to be a HUGE fan of the sex pistols, and other bands like the dead kennedys...
and with that i've always thought A LOT of the punk bands back in the 80's had A LOT of political views that were different than the mainstream...
with that said i've always thought of jello biafra as in the same leagues as johnny rotten...
and with that said they've since they do come out of the same generation, that the two above mentioned probably share A LOT of the same politcal views...
so dunno if u all know that mr. biafra ran for govenor of california against arnie back in 2004...
and here's a youtube clip of one of his rally's...
http://www.youtube.com/wa...
doncha think that it closely resemebles our dr. pauls message???
which makes me believe even more that johnny, once exposed to dr. pauls message, would have no other option but to support him.
You're dead on about Johnny and Biafra
funny how the "nerds" are Pistol and DK fans;)
Bands for Ron Paul
If you love music and Ron Paul, you have to go to myspace and check out "bands for Ron Paul" Alot of big names on there!
Diversity
Ron Paul is at the hub of so many dirverse types of people who all want and need the same thing - FREEDOM to be THEMSELVES. Many people in this are long time Republicans who have finally found somebody who will actually uphold their hopes because Ron Paul LIVES this stuff. The comments I am seeing here reflect a lack of understanding of left wing sentiment from the position of right wing linear thought. Simply put, the song they sang last night was the biggest honor they could share with Ron Paul because his agenda will tear down the things this song is against. Mr. Johnney Rotten hailed Ron paul last night as Mr. President back stage. I am just wondering when Neil Young will get behind this whole thing. THAT would bring in MILLIONS of people and a mass of energy!!!!
Sorry I am an old punk rocker myself
I love PIL and Jonny Lydion.. I am no Anarchist but love the music.. JL is awesome..witty also.. anyway I see no negitive conotations...
After the show JR told Ron it was an honor to meet him

Lew Rockwell mentioned that
Lew Rockwell mentioned that behind the scenes Rotten referred to the good doctor as "President Paul".
Recent Digg Arcticle claims Paul Internet Fraud

Personally, I thought it was great!
I didn't see ANY negative connotations with JR's comments or gestures to Ron during the song. I think the cordial handshake between the two at the very end of the show said it all :-)
I must confess, my gut
I must confess, my gut reaction was that Lydon was mocking Paul. I'm aware of Lydon's politics, so it seemed odd to me, but you can never put anything past "Johnny Rotten." He is notoriously hard to peg; I just figured he was in one of his "all politicians are lying scum" moods and was "taking the piss."
Either way, it hardly matters. It's not as though the Sex Pistols have a nationwide following of sheep looking to them for voting cues, like an Oprah Winfrey does.
__________
“Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.” --John Quincy Adams
ditto
I had the same reaction. Probably because Johnny's public personum is that of a jerk. I also didn't care for the performance either, but so what? De gustibus non disputandum. The Sex Pistols seem to like money and they aren't stealing it. It's a successful act and I suppose many of them are perfectly nice folks.
My guess, based on anecdotal history, was that Johnny was being sincerely supportive of The Good Doctor, public personum notwithstanding.

Video ?
Does anyone have a link for the Sex Pistols part of the show ?
Here's one

Thank You
heres one of the revolution at the Dem debate ...http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2452873209367959824&q=ron+paul&total=13158&start=0&num=10&so=1&type=search&plindex=7
FYI
You don't need that whole huge long URL, just this will do it:
http://video.google.com/v...
Funny, that's a Google Video URL, but it goes to a YouTube page; the actual original URL is:
http://www.youtube.com/wa...
When you see an "&" in middle of the URL after a long number (as in the Google address) or a YouTube alphanumeric, it's generally safe to assume that the & and everything following is unnecessary to get to the page.
Cmon gimme a break on all these ridiculous "set up" theories.
It was perfectly fine. Some of you forget the intelligence level of most Americans. I bet 50% of them watching that never even made the connection, if one was even intended. To most of them, It was just the sex pistols on the leno show. If it was an attempted takedown, they would have had someone like hugh heffner, or the president of NORMAL on with him and not Tom Cruise. For those that might say Cruise was for drawing a watching crowd, not a chance. People are sick of Tom Cruise most people could care less about him anymore. His appearance in the tabloids has even dwindled to only occasionally.
Tom Cruise was such an awful
Tom Cruise was such an awful lead guest last night. I bet a lot of people turned their TV off and went to bed before Dr. Paul came on.
Lol
That's funny
I really don't care for
garbage like the "Sex Pistols", but from reading the article linked below (thanks, Babyhuey, thought I'd move your link up to the top where it'll be seen) it seems clear that "Johnny Rotten" is smarter than he lets on, as apparently he was at the 2000 LP nominating convention:
http://www.dailybruin.ucl...
So I'd say he was, in his own charming fashion, supporting Ron Paul. And Dr. Paul handled it perfectly, smiling and shaking hands.
I saw him there in Anaheim
I attended the 2000 LP Convention and was walking through the lobby of the Anaheim Convention Center when I saw Johnny just standing there watching all the goings-on. Being someone who was really into the Punk genre some 25 yrs ago, I did a real double take. "Holy cow, that's Johhny Rotten!" I said to my brother who was with me.
I'm sure that Johnny is in full support of RP's campaign.
a prediction?
Hello Mr.Paul? So when are you planning on getting out of Iraq? Sounds like a prediction or wishful thinking to me. How many times have we referred to Ron Paul as the next president?
It will be interesting to see how this pans out.
I am not an anarchist. I did not like what I saw of them at the WTO fiasco in Seattle. Not my style.
I understand that an anarchy (absence of the crown) is the opposite of a monarchy . I support them in that sense. But I am not sure what they are in support of other than breaking windows etc.
I have not seen the video as of yet but am looking forward to it.
Maybe the tonight show was trying to tie Ron Paul with anarchy. I dunno. But the truth will come out as it always does. And Ron Paul will shine as usual due to the lack of blood on his hands.
Ciao.
Go Ron Paul!
many anarchists...
....technically, those of us who consider ourselves "anarchists" are "anarcho-capitalists". It's basically a strict adherence to the non aggression principle - and the demand that any gov't follow it as well. Read Murray Rothbard for a better description.
Anyone who would break windows that don't belong to them is breaking the non aggression principle and not an anarcho-capitalist.
Wouldn't that require more regard for legality?
For the government to practise restraint would require the highest regard for legality. After all, they have more guns as far as I know.
Correct
It's a good idea to be suspicious if the "mainstream" news media uses that term. It's not like they've demonstrated honesty in the past...
Anarchists I know are universally peaceful people who want to be left alone. What a concept.

unless you are blind you can't help but see where that came from. johnny rotten, sex pistols- anarchy in the U.K, fuck the Queen, etc- was serving only one master when he called out RP on the tonight show- do you fool.s not realize it! tha whole damn thing was a set up to make him look fooliosh!! have you not figured out yet who and what you are dealing with? they seek to defeat you by making a mockery of you!!
Ron Paul set up?
Be sure to clarify on whom you speak of. If you like the Sex Pistols or not, that doesn't matter. To think that the network set up Ron Paul, Tom Cruise, and the Sex Pistols. I do know the curruption the media has on our society but I don't know if I would say that the Jay Leno show was "set up" so to speak.
Give it a rest
You've already got your own thread pushing this BS. I dig conspiracies too but this interview was dynamite. Jay was cool. You're wrong. Take a lude dude.

I consider myself politcally savvy and I didn't see that, and If I didn't see, I surely don't think the Leno audience saw it. If they were going to make a mockery, it would have been in plain sight and easy to understand. And if there was one person who would not go along with the establishment it would have been Rotten - so there is no way he was doing that for anyone.
Of all the things I've seen...
I can't believe he is complaining about leno like we would complain about "o rly?" Bill maher tried to mock him on Pauls first interview remember?
That is a mockery, this was actually a good interview.
The thought cowards have ruled
Every level and manifestation of government beyond the family unit must be reviewed regularly to examine its true and just role. Its reason to exist must be regularly questioned and re-examined by any free people.
Government is a necessary evil. Government by its very nature reduces individual freedom to some extent as does every law established. Just how necessary a government or a law is requires much continual debate for individual freedom to remain maximized.
Anarchy, Libertarianism and many other concepts of governance or the lack thereof have been for too long neglected and people are starving for better ideas. We have been deprived of such discussion in the town halls for too, too many generations. Those who are quick to dismiss all manner of political thought and consideration, being ruled by a deep and pervasive fear of individual freedom for everyone, have overruled all novel considerations by force of numbers. Intimidation, marginalization, defamation, ridicule. These are the weapons of the thought cowards.
When Ron Paul is president I hope we the people can shed our fear of freedom once and for all .
Considering that Lydon is a
Considering that Lydon is a libertarian and a friend of the late Harry Browne, I would say it was "support".
libertarian huh?
I did not know that about Lydon...interesting. I hope the band supports the man and gets their fanbase to support Ron Paul.
It was definately support
RP was great, the sex pistols we great,Leno gave a good fair interview. Oh and Tom Cruise is a tool for walking out. It was also awesome to see those GIGANTIC RP signs at the democratic debate earlier today. Thank you msnbc for all the free RP advertisment/publicity. What a great day................................ Next Nov. 5th.

Do any of you guys actually WATCH Jay Leno when RP isn't on?
Please stop criticizing Tom Cruise for walking out. This is very NORMAL on the Tonight Show. A lot of guests stop by for one segment and then leave. Did anyone happen to notice that Betty White and Tom Arnold weren't around for the rest of the show. I know they weren't big players this time around but it is actually COMMON for one of the two big names to leave before the musical guest.
Tom Cruise was actually very sweet to the audience. He kept waving at us during the commercial breaks. It was actually pretty cool AND we gave him two standing ovations. We tried hard to represent RP supporters well and be respectful to everyone while still giving the loudest cheers to Ron Paul. Please be respectful in your comments on dailypaul so RP supporters don't get a bad name...one's already starting to develop for dailypaulers.
You are absolutely correct
I have never watched the Jay Leno show before tonight and the only reason was to see Ron Paul.
I don’t care for Jay Leno or, for that matter, any of the other talk shows, like Oprah, etc.
I have never before seen Tom Cruise in an informal interview and I was surprised that he was so shy. He seemed to be genuinely out of his element.
As for the so-called “sex pistols” it’s beyond me why they have any following at all. I’ve heard about them but I didn’t even know if they were a guy group or a gal group, that’s how out of touch with “modern music” I am. That horrid din was NOT music and I turned it off before their first number was over because it was so offensive. Their lead “singer” cannot sing a note and from what I could understand of what he was screaming he was vulgar and obscene. Even the studio band sounded like a disjointed cacophony of racket with everyone trying to be louder than the next. They are really terrible.
Oh, for the good old days of Glenn Miller, the Dorsey Brothers, Harry James, Pete Fountain----well, I’m dating myself now.
As usual, Ron Paul was excellent. He seems comfortable in any situation and always manages to turn a conversation around to the ISSUES.
How fun for you that you were able to be there in person!
Well, you're definitely out of touch ;)
The "Sex Pistols" reign in punk music was in the late 1970s, so I wouldn't exactly call it "modern" music. :)
Personally, I was there, and I was in Seventh Heaven watching the performance. I don't think it was their best performance of "Anarchy in the U.K.," but it's difficult to have that same level of energy 30 years later.
And, FWIW, JR was definitely respecting Ron Paul.
Lordy me...
Ouch! I’m more out of touch than I thought!
I appreciate your filling me in on the history of this group but I think this is a case of my ignorance being bliss. I have gotten to the age when I can honestly say that I will NEVER understand some things, don’t have the time or energy to TRY to understand some things, and really don’t CARE to understand some things. I’m afraid this sort of excuse for music is one of them.
I grew up in a musical family and I believe, culturally, music tells a lot about a society. What passes for music today (and I guess for the past 30+ years!) doesn’t speak well for our society. It’s generally crass, vulgar and obscene. It’s loud, rude, obnoxious and offensive. It’s abusive in language and assaults the ears and the spirit. It is often violent and frequently pornographic. I believe it does considerable harm to the psyche to listen to this stuff and I believe it contributes to the degradation of society.
Now, I don’t think we should all be sitting around listening to hymns or singing ‘cumbya’ all the time but maybe if folks listened to something a bit more soothing to the spirit they would have more peace in their hearts.
Enough of my philosophizing. I fear I’ve caused this thread to degenerate.
I may not get the music but I do understand Ron Paul!
I’m soooooo glad you had a good time.
