English-only speakers disappearing in Miami-Dade
MIAMI - Melissa Green's mother spoke Spanish, but she never learned -- her father forbid it. Today, that's a frequent problem in this city where the English-speaking population is outnumbered.
The 49-year-old flower shop owner and Miami native said her inability to speak ``espanol'' makes it difficult to conduct business, seek help at stores and even ask directions. She finds it ``frustrating.''
``It makes it hard for some people to find a job because they don't speak Spanish, and I don't think that it is right,'' said Green, who sometimes calls a Spanish-speaking friend to translate for customers who don't speak English.
``Sometimes I think they should learn it,'' she said.
In many areas of Miami, Spanish has become the predominant language, replacing English in everyday life. Anyone from Latin America could feel at home on the streets, without having to pronounce a single word in English.
In stores, shopkeepers wait on their clients in Spanish. Universities offer programs for Spanish speakers. And in supermarkets, banks, restaurants -- even at the post office and government offices -- information is given and assistance is offered in Spanish. In Miami, doctors and nurses speak Spanish with their patients and a large portion of advertising is in Spanish. Daily newspapers and radio and television stations cater to the Hispanic public.

"Ethnic ideologues ... have set themselves against the old American ideal of assimilation. They call on this republic to think in terms not of individual but group identity and to move the policy from individual to group rights. They have made a certain progress in transforming the United States into a more segregated society. They have filled the air with recrimination and rancor and have remarkably advanced the fragmentation of America."
MSM stupidity
this "article" is barely worth reading. How about an article about the number of people on the planet for whom english is a second language? How many billions of people outside the USA are devoting their time and energy and money to learn our language? How many people come to study in the USA and to learn English?
Divided we fall
Hope you take the time to read this.
American Suicide
We know Dick Lamm as the former Governor of Colorado. In that context his thoughts are particularly poignant. Last week there was an immigration overpopulation conference in Washington, DC, filled to capacity by many of America's finest minds and leaders. A brilliant college professor by the name of Victor Hansen Davis talked about his latest book, 'Mexifornia,' explaining how immigration - both legal and illegal was destroying the entire state of California. He said it would march across the country until it destroyed all vestiges of The American Dream.
Moments later, former Colorado Governor Richard D. Lamm stoo d up and gave a stunning speech on how to destroy America. The audience sat spellbound as he described eight methods for the destruction of the United States. He said, 'If you believe that America is too smug, too self-satisfied, too rich, then let's destroy America. It is not that hard to do. No nation in history has survived the ravages of time. Arnold Toynbee observed that all great civilizations rise and fall and that 'An autopsy of history would show that all great nations commit suicide.''
'Here is how they do it,' Lamm said: 'First, to destroy America, turn America into a bilingual or multi-lingual and bicultural country.' History shows that no nation can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures. It is a blessing for an individual to be bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society to be bilingual. The historical scholar, Seymour Lipset, put it this way: 'The histories of bilingual and bi-cultural societies that d o not assimilate are histories of turmoil, tension, and tragedy.' Canada, Belgium, Malaysia, and Lebanon all face crises of national existence in which minorities press for autonomy, if not independence. Pakistan and Cyprus have divided. Nigeria suppressed an ethnic rebellion. France faces difficulties with Basques, Bretons, and Corsicans.'.
Lamm went on: Second, to destroy America, 'Invent 'multiculturalism' and encourage immigrants to maintain their culture. Make it an article of belief that all cultures are equal That there are no cultural differences. Make it an article of faith that the Black and Hispanic dropout rates are due solely to prejudice and discrimination by the majority. Every other explanation is out of bounds.
Third, 'We could make the United States an 'Hispanic Quebec' without much effort. The key is to celebrate diversity rather than unity. As Benjamin Schwarz said in the Atlantic Monthly recently: 'The apparent success of our own multiethnic and m ulticultural experiment might have been achieved not by tolerance but by hegemony. Without the dominance that once dictated ethnocentricity and what it meant to be an American, we are left with only tolerance and pluralism to hold us together.'
Lamm said, 'I would encourage all immigrants to keep their own language and culture. I would replace the melting pot metaphor with the salad bowl metaphor. It is important to ensure that we have various cultural subgroups living in America enforcing their differences rather than as Americans, emphasizing their similarities.'
'Fourth, I would make our fastest growing demographic group the least educated. I would add a second underclass, unassimilated, undereducated, and antagonistic to our population. I would have this second underclass have a 50% dropout rate from high school.'
'My fifth point for destroying America would be to get big foundations and business to give these efforts lots of money. I would invest in ethnic ide ntity, and I would establish the cult of 'Victimology.' I would get all minorities to think that their lack of success was the fault of the majority. I would start a grievance industry blaming all minority failure on the majority population.'
'My sixth plan for America's downfall would include dual citizenship, and promote divided loyalties. I would celebrate diversity over unity. I would stress differences rather than similarities. Diverse people worldwide are mostly engaged in hating each other - that is, when they are not killing each other. A diverse, peaceful, or stable society is against most historical precedent. People undervalue the unity it takes to keep a nation together. Look at the ancient Greeks. The Greeks believed that they belonged to the same race; they possessed a common Language and literature; and they worshipped the same gods. All Greece took part in the Olympic games. A common enemy, Persia, threatened their liberty. Yet all these bonds were not strong enough to overcome two factors: local patriotism and geographical conditions that nurtured political divisions. Greece fell. 'E. Pluribus Unum' --From many, one. In that historical reality, if we put the emphasis on the 'pluribus' instead of t he 'Unum,' we will balkanize America as surely as Kosovo.'
'Next to last, I would place all subjects off limits; make it taboo to talk about anything against the cult of 'diversity.' I would find a word similar to 'heretic' in the 16th century - that stopped discussion and paralyzed thinking. Words like 'racist' or 'xenophobe' halt discussion and debate. Having made America a bilingual/bicultural country, having established multi-culturism, having the large foundations fund the doctrine of 'Victimology,' I would next make it impossible to enforce our immigration laws. I would develop a mantra: That because immigration has been good for America, it must always be good. I would make every individual immigrant symmetric and ignore the cu mulative impact of millions of them.'
In the last minute of his speech, Governor Lamm wiped his brow. Profound silence followed. Finally he said,. 'Lastly, I would censor Victor Hanson Davis's book 'Mexifornia.' His book is dangerous. It exposes the plan to destroy America. If you feel America deserves to be destroyed, don't read that book.'
There was no applause. A chilling fear quietly rose like an ominous cloud above every attendee at the conference. Every American in that room knew that everything Lamm enumerated was proceeding methodically, quietly, darkly, yet pervasively across the United States today. Discussion is being suppressed. Over 100 languages are ripping the foundation of our educational system and national cohesiveness. Even barbaric cultures that practice female genital mutilation are growing as we celebrate 'diversity.' American jobs are vanishing into the Third World as corporations create a Third World in America - take note of California and oth er states - to date, ten million illegal aliens and growing fast. It is reminiscent of George Orwell's book '1984.' In that story, three slogans are engraved in the Ministry of Truth building: 'War is peace,' 'Freedom is slavery,' and 'Ignorance is strength.'
Governor Lamm walked back to his seat. It dawned on everyone at the conference that our nation and the future of this great democracy is deeply in trouble and worsening fast. If we don't get this immigration monster stopped within three years, it will rage like a California wildfire and destroy everything in its path especially The American Dream.
Richard Lamm
is, or course, entitled to his opinions, but I think he is a bit of a moron.
He actually reminds me of Al Gore in the way he sensationalizes his ideas and distorts information in order to sway the audience. He does us all a disservice.
Lamm has ALWAYS been a
Lamm has ALWAYS been a sensationalist. ALWAYS. His statements are nothing more than fear mongering and xenophobia. Also, both his and Ron's anti-("illegal") immigrant views are a bit of a cop out. I come from the Libertarian view and open borders are one of the 'musts' in the Libertarian viewpoint.
We agree on two things then!
Lamm is useless and open borders. Like you I have my qualms about Dr.Paul's immigration ideas. Open the borders and, I believe, good things will happen.
No Country Has
Ever survived with open borders! Open the borders and good things will happen? Are you a friggin troll? You must be. I have read two posts from you and one of them says you consider John McCain a possibility? And now open borders? That's troll talk to me. We are experiencing the ramifications of your open borders now. We allow 1.8 million illegals into this country every year at a huge burden to the taxpayer. They dont assimilate into our culture we are forced to assimilate into thiers. This is wrong. I dont care WHO says it.
Is this what Daily Paul is all about?
Disagree w/ Ron Paul's platform=you are a troll.
Really? Is this what Daily Paul is all about? I also disagree w/ Ron Paul on the border issue as well.
If you carefully listen to RP's position, you can hear less than full conviction on that issue as well, since he mentions that people use illegals as scapegoats b/c things aren't going right at the moment.
I say less than full conviction b/c I believe that, at heart, RP is for open borders. He respects the rule of law more...therefore he's for legal immigration.
BTW, no, I'm not a troll. I've voted, plan to write him in, spread the word, gifted "The Revolution" book to several family/friends.
It is something that seriously pisses me off about this site, when someone throws out the word "troll" like the neocons toss "for national security's sake."
Am I allowed here as an atheist b/c I disagree w/ RP's religious views?
Am I allowed here b/c I think the 9/11 story is very fishy?
Am I allowed here b/c I am pro-abortion?
Good heavens...Let individuals think like individuals.
Thanks for attempting to set
Thanks for attempting to set the lock-step thinking here back a notch. One does not have to agree with every issue 100% to agree with the broad principles set forth in the "Ron Paul Republican" platform.
It's so disturbing to see these cowardly "troll" comments so often. Let people disagree and discuss, rather than demand unquestioning loyalty.
What tube did this genius
What tube did this genius stick his head into? Central banking cartels, military industrial complex, warfare, welfare, deviation from the Constitution has much less to do with our current situation than the burrito and dim-sum I ate yesterday. WoW!! a banner says,"Save America, eat steak and potato" Who would not enjoy that revolution?
You or
whoever wrote this is a great teacher. I might not have read it except for the post below mine. Thanks for entering this here. I am going to copy it and send to my email list. As I read it, I knew the ending of this speech. It is being done. It is 3/4 done. Maybe it is 90% done? Is it reversible?
Lamm's Speech
I don't know who wrote the original article about this speech.

wow that was great
I'm copying to show other people. that's the best argument that doesn't argue, I've ever read.
Perhaps our official language should be sign or smoke signals.
English is a great language as long as I don't have to bow to the King of England. As Americans we should be able to speak any language we wish in our communities, Cherokee, Navaho or even Potawatamee. This isn't the first time this question has been raised, since during the founding of our country not all colonialist spoke English, there was actually a vote to convene constitutional meetings in either English or German, English won by a vote of 7 to 6.

Another good Q & A article
Didn't see anything about spanish speaking, but great article.
Language: a systematic means
Language: a systematic means of communicating by the use of sounds or conventional symbols.
I don't understand why this is an issue. Why is language an issue? Is there a fear that one day we'll be forced to stop speaking English?
Or is a there a fear that South Americans will take over our country through the use of the Spanish language?
I don't understand why this is an issue?
Bottom Line: English and Spanish will exist for years and years to come... Who are we to tell people what language they should speak?
Instead of fighting over this irrelevant issue, people should do the smart thing and take the time to learn a new language. I speak 3 languages and find it extremely beneficial and helpful...

The pursuit of liberty is addictive... Let's make it contagious.
Why is it an issue? Because
Why is it an issue? Because fear overrules common sense.
Countries
Languages divide cause of the cultural differences between the two. It weakens any Nation, Country, People.
Which countries are bilingual or multilingual, they speak for themselves.
Freedom, Liberty, opportunities, choices, peace, justice.
Do you wish for us to be, say, more like Canada or exactly like Canada for example. Or, European Countries which have lost their freedom to the European Union. Or, the Roman Empire who allowed a multitude of different cultures to permeate their Country and divided it, overcame it by dividing. Not the language directly but the differences of the cultures.
A Nation divided against itself shall not stand. This is one issue that can divide a Nation and it does weaken it cause of the separation that it brings with it.
Your not very patriot are you, to which country do you hold your alliance? Or, do you have a Country?
Please reread your own post
You have no idea what you are talking about. Are you holding your alliance to Britain just because you speak English? You think Roman would last until now if there were one language. What's a country without individuals? If there is anything shared among Paulers, it is about individualism. Sheeps share a common language, culture, you want to be one?
O.K.
Lets make a new language....you decide what it is.
Actually, its the language that I was born with.
.
.
the language of individual
the language of individual freedom and responsibilty
Laugh
We already have that, called The United States Of America!
... ... ... ...
The British don't own the English language!
... ... ... ...
And, by "direct comparison", Italy is null 'n void to this day, they do not have a major voice.
... ... ... ...
Individualism is fine but when there are a multitude seeking the same right it is no longer individualism but a campaign.
They have no desire to assimilate, thus, this is the dividing. They forbade our culture and consider it as being abhorring in favor of their own of course.
... ... ... ...
So, you want a Country within a Country, thats all that is, no more, no less.
Besides, multiculturalism is the agenda of\for "The North American Union". Includes the "Great Amnesty Scam" against "We The People".
Its one of the tools that they're using to break our will, funny how they know that it will break us asunder. One of the great many of things anyway.
... ... ... ...
I've come to this conclusion:
That they are reading the Constitution, using it as "the reference". They're choosing the "exact opposite" of whats written within it. They know it very well. Dismantling it, piece by piece, systematic some say.

It is an issue
because I pay many tax dollars to present many governmental forms in various languages and road signs and much is even spent by businesses to communicate. It is not our place to speak every language. Great for those who want to, but we should not be forced to or forced to pay for it. It is a huge problem.
Sorry but I disagree with
Sorry but I disagree with you. I can think of many other "huge" problems...
1. Loss of our freedoms
2. Dishonest money
3. Illegal wars
4. Taxing our income
The list goes on and on...

The pursuit of liberty is addictive... Let's make it contagious.
If you move to a country to assimilate
you conform. If you move to a country to take it over, you don't conform.
If the country is stupid enough to bend to every whim, it will not stand straight and tall, it will fall from being twisted in every direction and not knowing what it is made of.
You or the government is
You or the government is going to demand how I talk? I agree that all tax payers should have a say in tax funded program. But if I decide to put up a sign in Martian on my own property, that's nobody's %$&*ing business.
You have a lot more anger than you do sense
I didn't say I would control what you do on your property. That is your business.
Is it really that difficult
Is it really that difficult to learn some rudimentary Spanish? Get over it. I've learned enough Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Thai and German to navigate most neighborhoods and countries I've been in.
Is it that difficult to learn English in America?

I don't know. Is it? Barring
I don't know. Is it? Barring an entire subset of the population absorbing and displaying fluency in English instantly, it would make sense to be proactive and learn a few words "they" speak. Wouldn't it?
I can count to ten and im fluent in swearing.
I know a little I just picked it up. I learned French in school, Now I need to learn Spanish too. Damn its hard being a American.
I will travel to latin America and I wont bother learning a thing about it. Im just going to show up with my hands out. How far will my gringo ass get?
This is a bigger issue then it looks. They have been hiring teachers to teach in Spanish rather then have them learn English in school.

Huh?
"...it's hard being an American."
Huh?
Most other countries require that the kids learn English, and in European countries a firm grasp of Italian, German, French, Spanish would be a near necessity.
This is only just
started. I wonder if there is a device out there that could translate Spanish to English and vice a versa, something I could carry in my pocket. All those modern day gadgets there must be something. Peace
