Unless you live in large urban areas around here you have to drive everywhere as there is not always public transport because everything is spread out so far.

not the gas price that prohibits that, but parking space... it is very expensive and also hard to find it.
Also you americans are famous for driving very big cars, I have to assume your cars on average burn much more fuel/mile.
