Mistakes by the R3VOLution

This Thread should be a healthy look at our actions (or inaction) inside the Revolution.

Sure we did a lot of things right, and this thread is NOT about what we did right....this thread is about what we did WRONG. Its about mistakes, fundamental mistakes that we made that -- had we known better-- we would do it differently if given a second chance again.

Notice I am not talking about the Ron Paul Campaign's mistakes--that is another thread---I am talking about our mistakes.

Here is an example of one mistake that I cannot help but shake my head and think, "if only we could do it over again"

Politics is always about money. We often forget this fact.

We in the R3volution where shocked at the sudden Mainstream Media turn around and respect Dr. Paul received with our November 5th little $50 Money bomb. Had we in the R3volution had any brains, we would have given Ron Paul’s campaign the $6,500,000 on April 15th, Income Tax Day, not November 5th.

Just think about that for a second. Getting $6.5 million months prior to Iowa instead of November, just weeks before New Hampshire, could have been huge for our Dr Paul. That would have shut MSM’s 24 hour motor mouth about Rudy Giuliani and gained a whole lot of respect for the Ron Paul Campaign.

If one thing I have learned is the MSM's is only concerned with "one's chances to win"....and Dr Paul's chances to win would have been seen by the Main Stream Media as a REAL POSSIBILITY. Rudy's campaign would have been seen as "under funded" compared to Dr. Paul's campaign. Unfortunately for us, the MSM played Dr. Paul as a curious funny side show and reminded their audiences that he was "not a serious candidate". [Hence don't waste your vote here]. And they did this from the very start. Had we started his campaign out with a two big Money Bombs he would have been seen as the "the candidate to beat" and received tons of Free Press from it.

So that is the point of this thread, lets review our mistakes, live on and most of all, LEARN.

Tell me the mistakes you see that we have made.

There WILL BE a Revolutionary candidate come 2012 to challenge President Obama. Currently Obama is the internet candidate with over 1.5 million donors. If he asked his donors to each give just "$250 to win the White House" he would have over $375 million. My point here is while we owned the internet this time, we may not own it next time.

So my fellow Patriots, we must learn our from our past mistakes while they are still fresh in our minds. So let me hear of your take, your angle on what we inside the Revolution did or did not do correctly.

Feedback

First off, Treg: excellent thread. Every wise organization is willing and even eager to review their strengths and weaknesses, and improve upon their efforts.

So, you wanted feedback? Okay...get comfortable...here's some feedback.

Start off with a few quotes...

James Madison: "Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives."

Thomas Jefferson: "Some preparation seems necessary to qualify the body of a nation for self-government."

TJ again: "The most effectual means of preventing [the perversion of power into tyranny are] to illuminate, as far as practicable, the minds of the people at large, and more especially to give them knowledge of those facts which history exhibits, that possessed thereby of the experience of other ages and countries, they may be enabled to know ambition under all its shapes, and prompt to exert their natural powers to defeat its purposes."

Dr. Benjamin Rush: "Freedom can exist only in the society of knowledge. Without learning, men are incapable of knowing their rights."

So where did we go wrong; or looked at more optimistically, how can we do better?

1a. I am Ron Paul. and/or I am the r3volution. Accept personal responsibility. Yes, work with others, combine efforts, harness the power of teamwork, BUT, as long as we have an attitude that assumes that it's someone else's responsibility to get it done, then our efforts as a whole are diminished. The ol' "chain is only as strong as its weakest link" concept.

1b. This means, even if there is "official," "headquartered" leadership, we, in our hearts, must nevertheless keep ourselves accountable. There will always be people to point at for slipping up (and be assured plenty of people may point at you for ways you may have slipped up) (and, if you're like me, you're pointing your own finger at yourself in recognition of how you've slipped up), but accusations of failure -- even legitimately warranted ones! -- do not shore up the damage. Think Triage: address the problem first, set it aright as best you can, and only then, once the need is handled, take the time to investigate and quibble and remedy for the future. It matters not one whit how the hole got in the dam while you're standing beneath its mighty pressure about to burst -- seal up that hole NOW, before all is lost, and bicker about it later...when you're still alive to discuss the issue.

2. Education. I'm sure I'm not alone in confessing that this past year and a half has been a whirlwind of education. Many comments abound here on DP of how much we've learned just during this campaign. It has been a steep learning curve.

To be better prepared for future efforts (runs for office, legislative action, etc.), we must first and foremost take it upon ourselves to become educated. That means instead of picking up a Danielle Steele paperback or watching the game on ESPN, we pick up the Constitution and actually read the whole darn thing, and watch solid, worthy documentaries to round out our reading.

As I've recommended before, I strongly urge folks to check out The Thomas Jefferson Education Consortium, the Face to Face with Greatness seminars presented by George Wythe College (available as live seminars or on DVDs), and these books, for starters:

A Thomas Jefferson Education: Teaching a Generation of Leaders for the Twenty-first Century

A Thomas Jefferson Education in Our Home

A Thomas Jefferson Education Home Companion

As you take upon yourself the mantle of self-education, you may be surprised at what piques your interest. I am the last person on Earth who I'd have expected to get into studying history. Yet, for the first time, I not only enjoy it, but I am constantly seeing the connections, and therefore the value, of taking the time to look back at ancient Greece and the Colonial Era and more. It all relates to us today, and arms us with knowledge to do battle (figuratively and literally).

3. It's not about the Big Offices. Naturally, getting RP into the Oval Office would be a dream come true, but it won't help a whole lot if he's got 500+ anti-r3volutionary minds in Congress vetoing him left and right (so to speak!). This grassroots mentality has already proven to be far more successful than RP even dreamed; applying that mentality to the local levels is precisely how we grow our organization from the bottom up. We didn't have a whole lot of time to do this during this election season; we were all focused on supporting the good doctor and spreading the word in general. Now we know: WE are the front lines. That means it's up to us to (gulp!) actually get involved ourselves in local politics and elections. It's intimidating enough to go door-to-door to pass out little cards with pre-printed info on 'em about somebody else; now, we get to step up to the next level of putting ourselves on the doorsteps with our own information on little cards to pass out. As I've said before, I don't want to do this! I admit it. And it's crystal clear that if I don't; if I leave a potential space open for a neo-con/liberal to seize, then I may as well go out and vote the neo-con/liberal ticket right now, because my failure to act is essentially an endorsement for the opposition.

4. Remember Kahn. Ghengis left us precious words of wisdom. These pearls are worthless if we ignore them. It is essential to turning our country around that we view the "sheeple" not as those terrible, dumb idiots, but as those who sadly have not been fortunate enough to have anyone care enough to come help wake them up. Yes, it's frustrating. Infuriating. Makes you want to bang your head against a brick wall at times, or wish you could smack 'em upside the head to make them see. But consider these people as you might consider a toddler. They do dumb, stupid things. They don't know any better. Even if you tell little Timmy a hundred times not to pull the cat's tail because the cat will scratch you, little Timmy may nod and smile and go right on over and pull the cat's tail. Do you smack little Timmy upside the head with a two-by-four? (Tell me you don't, please.) No; with love and a merciful abundance of patience, you correct -- again -- and explain and show the way. One day, little Timmy discovers that it's not such a good thing to pull the cat's tail. Little Timmy may even say to you, "Hey, why didn't you ever tell me that?" Just smile and heave a sigh of relief that little Timmy has finally come around. And instruct him how to teach others the same things you taught him.

Which brings us to...

5. Replication. In any movement when people are trying to bring new folks on board, it's often much easier to "win" people over than it is to keep them on board. People get distracted; they are accustomed to certain habits and slide back to familiar ways; you know what I mean; every person who has tried to evangelize a religion knows what I'm talking about; every salesman knows this, too.

It is critical that we not only win people, and keep them on board, but also train them up in winning new people to the movement. Replication is key; multiplicity is the result.

6. Paced tenacity. Whoo, boy, here's a case of the pot preaching to the kettle. If it's one thing I've learned, it's that dramatic upheavals in either direction do not serve the stability of the movement. It's very easy to become over-ecstatic; just as easy to plunge into the depths of despair. When unchecked, this whirlwind of a roller-coaster ride sucks the energy right out of you, which means you don't think as clearly, you don't lead as well, and you don't accomplish as effectively that which you are devoted to. So, (said while looking in a mirror), take the immediate ups and downs with deep breaths. Remember from time to time to look at a scale; say, the Dow Jones or any such chart. Notice in the short-term how jagged it looks. Scary! Now, step back and look at the same chart, but within a grander timeframe. Huh. Those particular jags seem far more manageable now. And we can then more objectively see the overall trends of where we're heading. So assume far-sightedness, stand back, look at the big picture, and remember to breathe.

Um...I hope that's enough for now. Hello?.... :D

list

1. start earlier (ok, we can't help what happened with that)
2. start at the local level; start at the family level
3. make more reasoned and better arguments; respect other's points of view
4. recognize the limitations of the internet (great for raising money; for getting votes, not so much---pursue person to person interaction
5. generate educational literature so parents can teach their children about topics like the constitution.

GMTA, farmer!

Even if everything was done right

Paul couldn't have won the election. Most people do not agree with the idea of limited government. Getting them to agree is the task at hand.

thats true

He made no attempt to varnish the truth as to what it would take to turn the country around- the drastic nature of some of his proposals should have clued more people in as to just how far off course we are. Fortunately enough people were awakened so he need not be the last of a dying breed. The whole point was to take back our country, not to hand it over to Ron Paul-so many Ron Pauls will emerge regardless who wins the nations biggest beauty contest - and they will begin to affect REAL "change" from the local level up. He set the bar pretty high- anyone supposing to get our votes from now on - regardless of the office will be held to higher standards.

awesome post, Jinc

Well said.

Some of our mistakes,

We need to accept all member's ideas. Whether or not we agree, everybody is entitled to an opinion. Diversity doesn't weaken us, it makes us a force to be reckoned with.

Acceptance of idea's does not mean we agree, but only that we acknowledge a differing opinion.

For example, Ron Paul said we should have a march on Washington, and Granny Warriors set up a march, and most members did not accept that invitation and instead derided the Granny March.

Well, let me tell you something, I was there, and quite frankly, I was dissapointed at the turnout. And at the time every one said that, "no, we should wait for Ron Paul", and then Ron Paul said July 12th, and now I don't see any "buzz" about the D.C. march.

Are we going to D.C. or not?

Should everyone have gone to the Granny March?

I can't answer these questions, only time will tell.

But I will tell you this, If you see someone here on this site, that is a diehard supporter of Ron Paul, and they have a plan to help Dr. Paul, then listen to them people. Time is always of the essence. Procrastination is the enemy of the Revolution.

But, this is only my opinion.

I'm not one to believe...

the will be any 2012 elections. Our liberties are being destroyed at too fast a pace. I'm been hearing this, "we'll do better next time" nonsense, since Barry Goldwater chose not to challenge Richard Nixon for the 1960 Presidential nomination. When Goldwater did run, in 1964, the RINOs creamed him. The closest we ever came was 1980, and Reagen hopelessly compromised himself by taking George Bush on the ticket.
If you're looking for something to do between now and the election, besides promoting Ron Paul and our positions, then do a little "RINO hunting."
Target RINOs for defeat. It's easy, it's fun, and the party actually eventually gets the message. My target is Saxby Chambliss.

Pick one, there's plenty to go around. Make your goal driving their poll numbers down at least ten percentage points.
You'll get the GOP's attention. Trust me...

The FUTURE will be better than Yesterday

This is

not worth a bump but I had to say something. I'm still in this because there's actually more to this than the 08 campaign. This is about long-term changes. Stay in, stay informed, don't let your guard down.

No Obama

I don't believe there will be a President Obama. The next President will be McCain. Obama's wife is a catastrophe for him. He won't be President unless Barr can steal heaps of votes.

I'm inclined to think McCain

I'm inclined to think McCain has a better shot too. The media is going easy on him, and a bit harder on Obama.

I hate the idea of either being President equally, though.

SUPPORT OUR FOUNDERS' AMERICA
Support the Constitution of the United States

Ok, so what mistakes did we make?

And how should we prepare inside the GOP to beat the incumbent president John McCain?

Should we not also be infiltrating key high up positions inside the DNC and help set policy there?

Still learning

Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes. We just have to learn from them.
grant

What's your purpose here?

One mistake the R3VOLUTION is making is reading and bumping any of Treg's posts! This is just negative defeatist bullshit with a twist of Obama at the end. "There WILL be a revolutionary candidate come 2012 to challenge President Obama." WTF!!! How do you know Obama will win? Who says there will even be an election?(PSD-51) Will it be too late for freedom in 2012? The only mistake the R3volution can make is to give up THIS election. We will fail if the MASSES aren't woken up NOW!!! Stop bitching about the past and crying over spilt milk. LOOK AHEAD and stop bumping Barack Treg Hussein Obama's posts!

What is my purpose here?

My purpose is clear, to learn from our past mistakes. To not do them again when we have our next Revolutionary Presidential Candidate.

blurred thinking

You continue to conflate the recognition that the Ron Paul 2008 presidential campaign is not and has never been about winning any election, with giving up.

No one is suggesting that anyone give up the campaign.
What we're suggesting is that people like you give up on the ludicrous fantasy of Ron Paul winning the election. Get real. Nobody is going to take a nutjob seriously, and if we make baseless proclamations such as "9/11 was an inside job" (as if that's a known fact), and "Ron Paul can win", we're going to be considered nutjobs, and ignored for good reason.

I mean Hillary got 18 million votes and hundreds and hundreds of delegates and yet has conceded the election, while we continue to bang our empty heads against the wall with a relatively paltry one million votes and a few dozen delegates. It's pathetic.

Time to get real, folks. Seriously.

The kind of thing you are talking about

is rife on the DP now and it almost all goes unchallenged. It is like this Paul/Ventura ticket because we need it NOW (we do) but seriously, even if we got it (have heard absolutely nothing) it still wouldn't win the nomination. It might make RP's name bigger which would be worth it but I don't think its gonna happen somehow. No harm in trying though.

Kent Snyder should have been fired a long time ago.

He is rumored to have been fired three weeks ago. He and Jesse Benton should have been run out of town after the NH primaries.
The guy in charge of the advertising should have been tarred and feathered.(not really) well maybe.
This campaign would have been nothing without grassroots efforts and support. They should have harnessed the power and talent of the grassroots.

Lets SELF evaluate here, lets not look at RP Campaign, but us.

Please think about what WE did and COULD have done different.

Some take offense that I said President Obama. Get a grip. If you prefer, just think its President McCain.

Now what? is the question.

Lets imagine we have this wonderful experienced guy named Thompson.
We in the Revolution all get behind Thompson for President in 2012.

What is the LIST of things we SHOULD do and NOT do to promote Thompson for President?

1) Money Bomb our Revolutionary Choice EARLY in the Campaign to GET THE LEAD and GET MSM talking about our candidate as a VIABLE candidate.

2) The Freeway signs and Guerrilla Marketing techniques worked.

3) The you tube videos worked to explain and get Emotional Impact.

What did not work?

2)
3)
4)
5)

I was calling for Kent Snyder to be fired

early in the campaign, and I was being attacked as an enemy of the revolution for it. I knew straight away when he let the first bad TV commercial air, and paid $1 million of our donations to air it, than he wasn't the right person for the job.

what name were you using

what name were you using then and how much did you give to the campaign?

I think one of the main objectives the Revolution should have

over the next 4 years is election fraud reform. The people at Blackbox.org did alot in NH - but really opened our eyes to how widespread and deeply entrenched the corrupt counting procedure really is. I would say if there is still an electronic machine in operation by 2012 we will have made a greivous mistake in underestimating the corruption. Electronic votes+ padded biased MSM polls = publicly accepted stolen elections. Im still convinced that the same people who stole the election for Bush will steal it for McCain this year to further the same exact policies they needed Bush in there for. Even though Hillary is throwing her support behind Obama all the MSM has to do is say that the HRC people are bitter and flocking to McCain and pad the polls accordingly- just enough to make it close enough to make programmed machines close the deal. People wont like it-and some wont buy it- but the same sleepy majority wont care or refuse to beleive the polls were fake all along because they saw a few YouTube videos of prejudice white folk threatening to vote McCain. This year theyd rather beleive that race was the factor- not corruption. The machines should have been eliminated after 2000.

Speaking of big mistakes

The kind of baseless conspiracy theory tripe exemplified by this post is really harmful to our cause.

"Know what you know, know what you don't know, and understand and appreciate the distinction."

And tell me, oh wise one,

And tell me, oh wise one, what pillar of wisdom and truth the official story of what happened on 9/11 is based upon? Because so many news stations, politicians, and experts rammed it down our throats it should be accepted as truth?

HBO's "Hacking Democracy"

is just one of the films you really must watch. This is not "baseless conspiracy theory." Does anyone have the YouTube of the software designer testifying in court that he was paid to rig voting machines? Why have several types of these machines been decertified in California?

You're right, though, our overzealousness on these little-understood issues can be harmful to our cause. I'm not sure what the remedy for that is.

yeah- I posted it below

I certainly dont run around randomly yelling into a megaphone that the machines are rigged- i do however discuss it among the people in this forum. It was quite on topic when after the NH primaries some precincts showed NO votes for Ron Paul-although Ron Paul never cried fraud- some of us felt our votes FOR Paul could loosely be considered relevant to campaign discussions.

have you ever seen how the votes are counted?

a system that leaves no paper-trail is hardly ideal. Even if you beleive that only other countries rig their elections- and the one country bent on policeing the world wouldnt stoop to that level, I would think that someone who uses the word "tripe" would be smart enough want to minimise undetectable electronic error if given the choice. Its like using a Sesame Street phone and assuming Big Bird is actually hearing you because ya pressed the button with his picture on it. Hell maybe he is...I dont know- Im paranoid.

If he can, then

...I definately want that phone.

For liberty!! *gong*

Do you realize

how many people, and how much secretive organizing, would have to be involved in such a conspiracy? And how great the chance is that someone would spill the beans?

Conspiracy theories = garbage.

Billy, go to your room. and

Billy, go to your room.
and again you forgot to add your bob barr support!

Your posts=garbage. What are

Your posts=garbage. What are you doing here, dude? Seriously.

actually yeah I do

and actually someone did. Heres one (the actual software designer who was asked by the Fla speaker of the house to write a program that would electronically change the results of a machine tabulated vote- without leaving a trail) He's testifying in court to that very conspiracy that involved secret organising. and it dosnt take many people. http://www.youtube.com/wa...

I'm not defending the system

There is a big difference between the system being potentially corruptible, and the system being actually corrupt.

I'm not saying that the system is not corruptible. I'm just saying that I don't KNOW that it is corrupt, and neither do you, and it's harmful to our cause to make claims that we don't know are true.

"Know what you know, know what you don't know, and understand and appreciate the distinction."

Advocating for minarchical libertarianism since 1984...

okay fine- I was ranting a little bit.

I DO know however that the way to know that it is NOT corrupt is to change it.
btw- I have introduced more than a few people to the campaign- using only Ron Paul campaign messages- not 9-11, election fraud or anything else not associated with his campaign. The distrust of the count system is probably more of a Democrat concern than a Republican one after Gore's loss- so I really doubt a potential Obama supporter who voted Gore is going to see my paranoid rant about the Repubs rigging the election and hold it against Ron Paul. I agree with you that the biggest mistake of the revolution is the perception that it was win or lose. Its always been about awareness. We can make 50 million people aware and vote -but in the off chance that the votes are tampered with it wont do us much good. We can pick up all the coins we want, we just need to make sure we've sewn the holes in our pockets.

Know what you know, know what you don't know

And ranting is the problem, because it's baseless. Whether it's about the voting system or 9/11, or anything else, the emphasis on conjecture as opposed to fact within the R3VOLUTION is very destructive to our credibility.

It's important that we all think clearly, and convey our thoughts clearly. Baseless rants about potential problems and possible conspiracies as if they are actual does us no good.

"Know what you know, know what you don't know, and understand and appreciate the distinction."

Advocating for minarchical libertarianism since 1984...

And the message does not include

9/11 inside job conspiracy theory tripe, like you were spouting in another thread. If that's what you're trying to make people "aware" of then you don't have a clue what the revolution is about.

The message has even less to do with

accepting everything the government tells you as gospel, like you were spouting in the same thread. If I was "off topic" then say so- you were debating me St Agnes. The message that 9-11 WASNT an inside job isnt the message of the Revolution either. And get your own word. "tripe" belongs to minarchist.

That 9/11 was not an inside job

is definitely a message of the revolution. It's a centerpeice of Dr. Paul's non-interventionist philosophy. His position is that 9/11was triggered by us intervening in foreign countries. The Arabs got upset and came here and attacked innocent civilians. His position is that a non-intervenist foreign policy would have prevented 9/11, and most other terrorist attacks in the future.

If you're going around saying 9/11 was an inside job, you're occluding and subverting his whole anti-interventionist message as well as his evidentiary justification for it.

: ) I disagree

If a new investigation revealed that while islamofascists do in fact hate us, they werent responsible for 9/11 Ron Paul wouldnt change his non interventionist policy. He held the same beleifs LONG before 9/11. He talks about putting ourselves between Isreal and her enemies, policing the world and the list goes on and on - he references more instances that pre-date 9/11- and would be the first to point out that the war in Iraq has nothing to do with 9/11 but more about oil and nation building. 9/11 being caused by Islamic extremists is at the top of page 3 of his reasons for having a strict non-intervensionist policy.

Mistake: assuming the campaign was about winning the election

I think the biggest mistake made by many members of the R3VOLUTION was assuming that the R3VOLUTION was about winning this election. That was never Ron Paul's intention, which is obvious by how elated he is with the results achieved by his campaign, beyond his wildest dreams, as compared to the despair commonly expressed within the R3VOLUTION, including starting threads like this.

Good point!

With our 2012 Presidential Candidate, what is the list of things we should do different to win the GOP nomination and give president Obama a run for his money?

In Peace & Liberty,
Treg

2012 is probably not feasible for winning

I don't think four years is enough time to build the critical mass required of people who understand and support the message of liberty enough in order for a liberty candidate to have a serious chance of winning. That said, someone with the right personality and background might be able to do it. Ron Paul just was not the right image required to win the presidency.

In any case, the focus needs to be on continuing to build that critical mass of people who make liberty the top priority. 1%, 2%, 4%... we really need to get to at least 15% before we start getting serious attention, and I mean 15% of all voters, not just within the GOP. Once we get to that point we might be able to start thinking seriously about winning elections.

"Know what you know, know what you don't know, and understand and appreciate the distinction."

Advocating for minarchical libertarianism since 1984...

I agree, unless....

a major economic downturn comes before the election- I say this simply because McCain has admitted to ignorance wnen it comes to the economy, and Obama is inexperienced. People are as unhappy with the Congress as they are with the President, maybe more so..And having two members of that body running may dishearten those who are as discontent with Congress as they are with the President.

Libera me, let the truth break, what my fears make--Leslie Phillips

Iowa and New Hampshire

Everything in the campaign coffers should have been poured into these early efforts, along with an extensive speaking schedule by Dr. Paul, to go for some early recognition. We didn't do it, and we didn't get it. We've been in the rear view mirror ever since.

different times for different things

For upcoming convention states, there are times to focus on different activities. The week before and the morning of convention, focus on the rules and getting our people to show up.
Sign waving the morning of the convention, in my opinion, is a waste of time. OK, a few folks can do that if that is what they want to be doing, but make sure you have the rules, RROO and your people covered. This is what counts at the conventions, so don't get distracted doing more of the same sign waving.
