OK, Conley definitely sounds on target with getting out of Iraq and restoring sound money. That puts him way ahead of a conventional Democrat. But he doesn't mention a "noninterventionist" foreign policy from what I could see.

The way he talks about trade makes me nervous. Obviously the so called free trade agreements we have now are not free trade, but his rhetoric makes it sound like he wants to move towards protectionism.

In writing about energy, he says he wants to encourage the development of alternatives. Now if he wants to cut taxes and regulations on companies that are pursuing alternatives, I'm all for that, but if he's push programs like the subsidization of ethanol, or cap in trade, I simply cannot get behind him.

Does this guy have credentials in the freedom movement. He sounds a lot better than main stream Dems, and in many areas much better than Republicans, but I have some concerns.

Many people go to Washington, with good intentions, but the political game causes them to sell out and push for bigger government. Are we sure this guy will consistently adhere to the constitution? If he won't then likely his impact will be minimal or even harmful. Rhetoric is all well and good, but we need congressmen who will fight for the constitution, even when unconstitutional legislation may be appealing to them.

Maybe this guy has a solid track record and it's just his rhetoric that throws me off. After all, he's running as a democrat, and he probably feels a need to talk about the middle class etc.

We need more Democrats like Conley and fewer "Republicans" like Graham (and McCain).
I am one Republican who would not only happily vote for Conley but actively campaign for him.

As long as the underlying principals of a party do not contradict the "campaign for libertiy" (i.e socialist, comunist party) then I don't have a problem skipping to a different party!

parties mean nothing - they are basically instruments to gain power.
candidates mean everything - they are the people who can restore our liberty.
candidates are individuals - they all must be judged individually.

even campaign for liberty cannot have a blanket litmus test to determine a candidate. ultimately, the campaign for liberty serves not to determine who are necessarily perfect proponents of american liberty, but to simply re-inject several crucial status quo policies into public debate, such as monetary policy, foreign policy, constitutional limitation of power (including the drug war), and state capitalism vs free market capitalism.

given this standard, neither barr or gravel would fit perfectly, but they both at least bring one of the status quo issues to the table.
