WSJ: The Ron Paul Vote: A Headache for John McCain?
There is plenty of focus these days on whether Barack Obama can win the lion’s share of the 18 million or so voters who backed Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries and caucuses.
It is a worthy question. But just as important may be the ultimate destination of the 1.2 million voters on the Republican side who cast their ballots for Ron Paul. For while there has been a rapprochement of sorts between Sens. Clinton and Obama, that has not been the case as yet between Rep. Paul and John McCain.
The outspoken libertarian, anti-Iraq war congressman from Texas has been regarded by many in the GOP as a “nutty uncle,” with his ubiquitous campaign signs and dedicated cadre of Internet-savvy supporters. Asked recently by Newsweek what his relationship was with Sen. McCain, Rep. Paul responded: “It pretty much doesn’t exist. He has his beliefs and I have mine, and they just don’t come together very well.”
Rep. Paul underscored that Thursday night when he announced his withdrawal from the Republican presidential race, throwing his support — and considerable fund-raising prowess — behind an effort to elect libertarian-leaning Republicans in November. He didn’t endorse Sen. McCain.
That lack of a relationship –- if it persists — could cost Sen. McCain dearly in the fall. In Iowa, Rep. Paul drew nearly 12,000 votes in this year’s Republican caucuses, almost 2,000 more than President Bush’s margin of victory in the state in 2004. In New Mexico, the roughly 15,500 Republican primary votes cast for Rep. Paul this month were more than double Mr. Bush’s margin of victory four years ago. Together, the two states have 12 electoral votes – Iowa seven; New Mexico five – that could be in jeopardy of deserting the GOP column.

McCain vs Obama
I think McCain wins. All these Hillary voters who rang in to Hannity and whatever saying they would vote McCain is one reason.
I didn't think primary voters would vote for him - and they did en masse. Some left-wingers and independents like him because of the 'Maverick' thing, and a LOT of people like him because he looks and sounds right - he's 'like me' or 'like my Dad'. "Anyone who was a POW must be a good guy..."
I think most people don't really believe he will go to war with Iran, and they know Obama won't stop the war soon enough to make a difference.
Also Obama will be wiped out; they will go after his wife (what a liability she is) and as moderate as he comes across, his wife will make people uneasy that he is like her too, privately - his minister(s), drug use, that gay limo thing - he will be toast after about 3 months. And there is his race which is a factor with some people; plus his 'yuppy-appeal' which is a turn off.
Obama won't get any Republicans except the very few switched-on ones who are scared of McCain (I read Fred Reed saying Obama should nominate Jim Webb as VP to get past all these problems) and he will probably lose more Democrats than he gains - those strange sea-creatures who like Hillary Clinton.
So THIS is why some people are voting Barr.
McCain Can't Win ANYWAY
There is NO WAY McCain can win anyway, therefore instead of really throwing your vote away, it is time to vote for third parties and destroy the hold the parties have over politics.
We cannot continue to have our country in the stranglehold that the parties have on us, they are tied up by one and the same agenda.
Both parties are facing some serious third party challenges this year, the first time EVER, and we ought to make it as hard as possible for either one to take it.
At least that way, with perhaps .10 of the population voting for them and getting one of them in office, there will be NO WAY for them to claim a mandate from the people.
With their power hanging by a thread, literally, anything they do will be scrutinized by the PEOPLE and they'll have to pay attention for a change.

I agree, I have been telling
I agree, I have been telling everyone I know, that it will do them no good to vote for McCain, because I feel there is one reason and one alone that he is expected to win the nomination-the simple fact, not enough people are going to vote for him, they do not believe in him. I am telling everyone, make your vote count, vote for someone you believe in that is third party.

Previously our Defense Department gave a $35 billion air fleet tanker contract to EADS, which manufactures the Airbus, rather than to Boeing - a contract that should have never been written in the first place. The US doesn’t need the tankers. In that process 44,000 well paying US jobs were lost to Europeans. As it turns out the bid-awarding process was corrupt. The EADS fleet will cost American taxpayers dearly and the model is less safe than the Boeing model. Boeing could have saved taxpayers $90 billion. The EADS contract will cost us $40 billion. The aircraft is less capable. EADS is using illegal subsidies. EADS won exemptions from key national security laws. The Boeing model produces 25% less carbon dioxide, reducing greenhouse gases and offers a 24% fuel savings – a cost borne by taxpayers. Even as the contract for $40 billion is being handed over, the federal government is aggressively pursuing legal action against EADS at the WTO for getting grants and loans at unfairly favorable rates.
The key Senator John McCain (R-AZ) played a crucial role in blocking the deal to build air tankers from going to Boeing. The position fattens his campaign coffers.
The question is who arranged the payoffs and who received them?
You can't be a Ron Paul....
supporter and then vote for John McCain who is essentially the Anti-Paul
candidate, the only thing they have in common is age except it seems as if McCain is about to keal over and hit the floor. You can't like Bob Marley music and like Barry White music...
9/11 was an inside job .....time to get some answers..RP 2008
It's Simple.....
The way I see it, if we can't vote for RP why don't we support him thru C4L and vote for Chuck Baldwin of the CP.
It is the Constitution we all want, Right?? At least you will be voting your conscience !
Yes you can
While I agree that one can't be a true Ron Paul supporter and become a McCain supporter unless one is schizophrenic, it most certainly IS possible to like Bob Marley music and Barry White music. My iPod proves this.
bump
its either RP or Bob Barr for me
No way on McCain
I loved McCain in 2000, but there is no-way, no-how, I could ever vote for him in Nov. He turned into Mr. Kiss Ass to get elected, has so many flip-flops, it's not even funny, and the term "straight talk" is so far from the McCain of 2008 that it makes me laugh to even hear him use it.
I would vote for random person choose off of the street before McCain. Right now, I am leaning towards Barr. Obama would be 2nd choice, random street person 3rd, McCain somewhere after that.

That is not the only problem WSJ has to report on.
Most Paul supporters know the FAUX NewsCorp bought DowJones which owns the Wall Street Journal and Barron's. In fact quit a few have been shorting NWS (news corp stock) and we thank the free market for the 25% gain. Now Faux omitting Ron in New Hampshire and The New Republic and Weekly Standard are essentially mouthpieces for the Neo-Con and Likud thinking. So essentially we have big government bad ideas from both political parties. We also understand that we will receive the typical racist, anti semitic, fringe nut cases name calling. We can accept that, but the truth may become exposed. Freedom is strong. America is outraged at the Ana Nichole type story reporting. When the Government uses the FBI and Patriot act to force a Governor to resign over 5400 dollars of bad choices and does not pursue the million in Isman fees and billions in cross media ownership issues we have a problem. We thank Paul for having the courage of a Patriot. We all know the military, media, banking, "war on Drugs" cartel do not want limited government in any way shape or form. I have two goals, first to make it known that the biggest military industrial empire candidate is illegible under the constitution and the second is to write in Ron Paul... I have hope, the hope is America stops and thinks about what they leave for future.
GOP
dug this hole for themselves. McCain said he does not want the Paul vote. Good.
Can't we get Paul on a ticket??? Any ticket will do.
I spoke and listened at
I spoke and listened at great length last night to a Republican conservative explaining what members of her church are encouraging each other to do __vote for McCain. They believe that if all conservative Christians voted for McCain even when they dont support him it should be done to keep Obama from destroying the counrty--my my what a hard thing to swallow. Convinced they have enough of the christian vote to put McCain in office they figure its an okay sacrifice to make to keep Obama at bay--being a muslim was a big deterrent to them and a socialist ofcourse.
I honestly am having a hard time digesting what has been done to my vote...there is absolutely a deep void in my heart having to consider giving it to anyone other than Paul. On one hand it's wasted by not being cast on the other it's wasted on any other candidate--the frustration of this reality is hitting us all very hard!!!
"The true patriot is motivated by a sense of responsibility, and out of self interest -- for himself, his family, and the future of his country -- to resist government abuse of power. He rejects the notion that patriotism means obedience to the state."Ron
I think no matter what they
I think no matter what they do, Obama will be the next dictator...uh...president because the talking heads on TV tells us so and everyone does what the TV tells them to do.. And after he has become President, everyone will try and figure out how we got in the new mess we will be in and how to get out of it. I've seen this happen so many times that it isn't even funny.. maybe crazy funny, but not normal funny... People haven't suffered enough yet for a real change to happen...
I'm being pressured too
I don't think John McCain is any better for this country than Barack Obama. Both candidates are pretty much the same to me, and I don't appreciate the fascist attitude of republicans who think they know better than me what to do with my vote!
McCain and Obama should form
McCain and Obama should form a unity ticket and get married.
I can't write in Ron in my state. I will not vote for president this year. Once again, there is no choice. And now the Libertarians have nominated a conservative Republican. If I'd wanted one of them I could have voted for Brownback.
Maybe McCain and Barr should just change places and that way at least one of them would make sense. McCain doesn't fit in the L party, but Barr certainly fits better as an R than an L. And no, I am not voting for Barr either. A drug warrior fascist is always a drug warrior fascist. He takes money from the marijuana policy project and still won't talk about the obscene war on drugs as anything but God's work. Douche.
I thought Bob Barr was anti-freedom, but
I thought Bob Barr was anti-freedom, but maybe he has changed. In an article in the Huffington Post, he says he was wrong about the war on drugs.
