Paul supporters fall short in Montana.....damn it....

MISSOULA, Mont. - Sen. John McCain may be the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, but supporters of Ron Paul in Montana refused to abandon their candidate.

The group led an impassioned fight Friday at the Montana GOP convention, shaking things up in a failed effort to secure the state's 22 national convention delegates for Paul — who suspended his presidential bid earlier this month.

While the battle jazzed up a normally dull delegate selection process, Paul supporters could not muster enough votes to trump McCain's backers. In the end, McCain received all 22 delegates despite a close vote, party officials said.

Earlier in the evening, Paul told the crowd that his support in Montana was the best he had received anywhere.

"Montana's been treating me quite well," he said. "The spirit is alive here."

The Texas congressman praised the Montana GOP for letting him speak at their evening dinner and for giving his delegates a chance.

"This is has been one of the best — if not the best — in the way we have been treated," Paul said.

Paul was not a typical GOP convention headliner. He criticized nearly as many Bush administration ideas, such as wartime spending and No Child Left Behind, as he did Democratic ones.

But he received a warm reception from the crowd anyway with a message heavy on cutting government.

"We are talking about the fundamental beliefs of the Republican Party," said Paul, in what he characterized as likely the last speech of his suspended campaign. "These are issues that are important to me."

Paul's supporters said they would continue to fight for delegates at the national convention to honor the principles of the campaign, and as a way to continue pushing their ideals.

Paul finished second in Montana's Super Tuesday caucus — behind Mitt Romney and ahead of McCain, who came in third.

WAIT; We WON big time on Platform

Go back to gold standard, get rid of IRS, no to NAFTA, send illegals home, English language, Follow constitution going to war and much more. Have to get my hands on the document next week for better info. My county chair stood up and said they had not had enough time to read the entire platform but Rick Hill, the chair, continued on for approval anyway. (Hill is a past Congressman; I couldn't believe it).

Idaho you are great! Have been following you on the TF meetup. Ron Paul was only talking to the State MT GOP and thanking them for inviting him as our Key Note Speaker at our dinner. Dr. Paul also met with delegates in a private room before the vote (let everyone take pictures) and did a book signing late afternoon.

Should have been there at the dinner; nearly half of us were RP people and we stood up many times to cheer, clap, whistle (we were outright obnoxious). McCain people set there like stumps but they did listened and did not get up and walk out. The delegate voting took place in the afternoon and it took them into the night to count the weighted vote. We nominated from the floor and they put us on one side of the ballot and those chosen by the GOP on the other side. (?) Also, if only one person came from a Co. they allowed them 100% in the weighted vote instead of 25% (could send 4 to 25 per Co.) We did get ONE alternate.

Good try Montana!!

I'm not sure that I understand the last part of your post though, can you state your next to last sentence a little more clearly?

Each County

can send 4 to 25 delegates to state. Our opinion was that a county which only sends one delegate should only have 25% of that county's weighted vote. Giving them 100% turned the table against us.

Ah, I see! So what you're saying is one person had more

influence in the vote than they should have?

Vote does not count, party

Vote does not count, party hacks do. Is this the 'democracy' we're selling around the globe?

We must never underestimate

the power of the machine behind the State GOP organizations. Some of their tactics are highly visible, some are not, and who knows what might have gone on behind closed doors. Leadership has been in dirty politics for years and years and know the ropes. You know those situations where no matter how right you are and how strongly you feel about something, and others "don't get it." Sometimes that's how we all feel, but we must be comfortable in this and continue with our message.

We appreciate all the efforts from Montana....and Idaho, too (a true star)....and I'm sure Ron Paul does too. Sometimes when he speaks of the R3volution, he seems truly amazed at what has been accomplished and we must take those accomplishments and build on them. Otherwise, we will continue to have big government and machine run politics. Yes, there have been disappointments, but hey, I sitll haven't heard the fat lady sing and by his cheshire cat smile in recent interviews, I don't think Dr. Paul has either. Think of what we are showing the RNC in DC....that we are a strong contingent who will change their organization and they are frightened, because to them it means potential loss of revenues and positions of power. We are force. Thank you Montana!

IT'S DOABLE

In MT do you know of any "sleepers"

in the McCain slate.

a bit insulted in Idaho

We gave him a better percentage, and our Convention did not fight his delegates at all. My county, legislative district, and region are all chaired, vice-chaired and secretaried by Ron Paul people now. Our old State Chairman got dumped in spite of endorsements from the Governor and 3 of 4 Federal politicians, and a Ron Paul sympathetic chair was put in his place. My enitre county central committee is Ron Paul. How is it Montana was better to him than that?

I think he was referring to

I think he was referring to the fact that the GOP in Montana actually let him speak-that is quite an accomplishment, considering so many states would not allow it. You never know, because he was allowed to speak, it is possible that the truth may take root in the delegate's hearts who were chosen-it is my prayer anyway.

Apples and Oranges

In one, he's talking to and about the voters and people of Montana, and in your case, you're talking about GOP members.

I'm surprised this bothers you, in any case; Ron Paul is a mere mortal and his opinion really shouldn't count so much that it would insult you at all. You know what you have accomplished. Be proud.

IMissLiberty

Please

don't feel insulted.
I'm sure you realize that he's very proud of our Idaho accomplishments, and we on DP certainly are!
He was in Montana, and he wanted to say nice things about them while he was there.
I wouldn't read any more into his statements than that.

I am a word freak

One of the things I admire about Ron Paul is he speaks the truth, and saying "feel good" things is not the same. I sincerely hope he BELIEVES Montana treated him better. I would rather be slighted than discover he has turned into a politician who says whatever is most useful rather than what he believes to be true.

Number one, he is not

Number one, he is not perhaps aware of each convention, especially if he was not present. Two, looks like they gave him food. Three, don't count on anyone to quote him exactly. Four, you are not going to honestly tell someone they look fat if they get all dressed up and ask "How do I look"? Saying nice things are not REALLY lies..

A battle lost,

but not the war, Long live the Revolution!

so wait, Mccain finished

so wait, Mccain finished third in the primary, behind Paul. And he gets all the delegates? Another prime example of popular vote meaning absolutely nothing. I cant believe the system we have.

Getting all the votes

Yeah it's a bad deal in the Republican Party in some states they have a winner take all when it comes to delegates. Most of McCains delegates were got by default (he didn't earn them). But that can be worked to Ron Paul's advantage.By a well planned direction for the National Convention we can upset his apple cart so to speak.
The following was posted awhile back so the actual numbers may vary but the plan is the same.

McCain has by some reports 1333 pledged delegates and 85 RNC delegates.Huckabee has 272 pledged delegates and 3 RNC delegates.Romney has 255 pledged delegates.Pledged delegates are just that pledged. The pledged delegates do not have to vote McCain although for party unity they might. They have just signed a letter of their intentions. What would happen if they didn't vote for McCain and placed their votes for Ron Paul, probably nothing. I mean I don't think they will be shackled and sent to Iraq. They might catch a little flack about party unity, but the party has shown no unity to Dr. Paul this whole campaign. But if a number of them defect the numbers could break down a lot different. If Romney and Huckabee delegates voted for Dr. Paul they could place him with 527 delegates+ his 26 or 42 which would place him at 569 if you go with the 42 figure. Now if a number of McCain delegates jump ship he could very well get the nomination or at least broker the convention. lot of McCain's count he did not earn on his own.A lot of the states have a winner take all type thing going. So in those states everyone else's delegates had to pledge to him (hence 1333).But if a good number of those delegates believe they have been gyped out of their vote, they not only can but should vote against the pledge or abstain from voting that will bring the numbers very different.Take the case of Abraham Lincoln in the Republican National Convention of 1860. Going into the Convention he had only 32 delegates, but a few months before he had gave a speech at Coopers Union in New York. The topic he spoke on was The Constitution and he researched his material and gave a monumental speech. You can very easily relate this to some of Dr. Paul's speeches (like Nevada). But the when the Convention came his delegates and supporters packed the place and were very vocal as to their support of Mr. Lincoln. There were three votes for the nomination with Lincoln winning the third and final vote and the Republican nomination for 1860 and who went on to be the 16th President.
So by a concerted effort on the part of the Ron Paul delegates that go to the Convention they can pull delegates from McCain.Remember what Dr.Paul said about fourth generation warfare.

That was my first thought, too

InSane must feel very proud of Montana, knowing he's their third choice, and only gets the delegates because the other contenders have bowed out of the race officially.

There's no way this guy's going to make it to the Oval Office. Delegates who voted for him in Montana may have felt they were towing the party line, yet as they drove home, I'll bet they couldn't help but re-run Paul's speaking points in their minds...

I WANT TO HEAR FROM THE DELEGATES THEMSELVES...

Something is up....and it is corrupt!!!

Good job Montana

You showed up, you fought the fight, you learned alot, and Ron Paul felt very welcome there...the tide is turning....I feel it.

Oh well...what can we say?? Besides hoping that he was able to

convert some of those delegates during his speech?? Can you tell I'm searching for the silver lining in all this??

Thanks!!! :-) I would have liked to have seen that too!! Who

knows??? Maybe it does have some merit!!! ;-) Sometimes I feel like I'm grasping at straws!! But I can always hope...
