"Milwaukee police said they have restored order this morning but will remain outside of the Marcia P. Coggs Human Services Center after a crowd awaiting free food vouchers - which never were to be distributed - became unruly this morning."

We don't expect long lines for free food in this country???
It should have occured to us to think that a long time ago, we should have realized that we shouldn't expect free food for anyone in this country.
In order for the government to give something, they must first take it away from someone else. Well, since it's partially my money, I order them...stop giving it away and calling it charity. I'll decide how to be charitable with my money, and you can just do your job and maintain an expensive bloated beaurocracy.
If you would stop promising to give away free food...I promise you, the lines won't form.
This statement bothered me

This should not bother you
as when people are hungry or needy, they will get in line.
I would never get in line as it could lead to "another" shelter where food and shelter would be provided!
And how could they have proof of anything if it were gone.
We should not live in scarcity and think others are taking advantage. The govt has taught those who should not be in the "flood victim" line to have their hands out anyhow. Whether here or there - same difference.

I live paycheck to paycheck but am still working very hard to stock up on food, water, protection, etc. We have this wonderful welfare state where so many people will go stand in line and even become violent for "their" freebies which they feel are owed to them. If there will be riots it will be the people who have lived off our tax dollars all of their lives.
Be thankful
you still have a job and a paycheck. These flood victims not only lost their homes, crops, stored food, but their ability to make a living.
I fear where they may end us as many did from the Katrina disaster.
Continue to work hard but also work smart!
A mild glimpse of what might be expected in a genuine
food shortage/crisis. It brings to mind stranded motorists, trying to get out of Houston ahead of Rita (I live near US 290 in Harris county), out of gas and forced to spend days and nights in truck stop parking lots, where there was no food or gas. If ever there was a reason to attend to one's own food supply, this is it.

Ok crucify me for asking
I saw one white guy in line. Why must those looking for food to live be our minorities. It is a sad sight indeed. Next time hopefully they will get the system for handing out food vouchers streamlined. Once again though government is looked to as the hand out and savior.
Its cultural rather than racial
In Liverpool, England the welfare claimants are overwhelmingly white and native-born. The foreigners in Liverpool - of all skintones - are much more likely to work hard for a living.
In London, England there is a huge cultural and economic - not racial - gulf between African immigrants and the British born children of Afro-Caribbean ancestry. The Africans have much higher levels of employment. They are also more likely to be in university and less likely to be in jail.
Its very sad that people tend to go postal every time the words "race" or "culture" are mentioned. If people could discuss these issues calmly there would be alot less mistrust and antipathy between races.
Of course, it is important to remember that individuals have a personal responsibility to buck the cultural trend where the prevailing culture is negative.

Interesting queston. Perhaps the minorities are dumped on and given no opportnities in life...or could be they do not take full responsibility for their own welfare...or just know how to work the system....or a combination based on individuals. But I doubt that is only ONE of the above.
